(eds.), Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, Scientific Results, College Station, TX (Ocean Drilling Program), 106/109, 123-142, https://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.106109.135.1990

Description: ODP Legs 106 and 109 drilled zero-age crust at Site 648 on the axis of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and recovered sparsely to moderately phyric but chemically homogeneous basalt. Plagioclase phenocrysts in Site 648 basalts exhibit a variety of zoning patterns and compositions including: (1) tabular (An84) cores mantled by more sodic zones (An80 and An75), (2) tabular (An80) cores mantled by narrow (An84 and An75) zones, (3) skeletal cores (An80-78) enclosing sodic (An75) patches, and (4) rounded cores (An75) surrounded by skeletal (An80-78) mantles. Backscattered electron images have been used to define zone morphologies in 28 crystals; major element compositions of the zones have been determined by electron microprobe; and Mg, K, Ti, Fe, and Sr concentrations have been determined by ion microprobe. Equilibrium partitioning of minor and trace elements between crystals and liquids occurred during stable growth of tabular cores and inner rims. Disequilibrium partitioning occurred during rapid growth of crystal rims, resulting in enrichment of incompatible trace and minor elements, and during growth of calcic zones with skeletal and acicular morphology, resulting in enrichment of Fe and Sr and depletion of Mg, K, and Ti. Crystal/liquid partition coefficients estimated from the composition of inner rims and glass are DMg = 0.03, DK = 0.15, DTi = 0.028, DFe = 0.05, and DSr = 1.82. Using these partition coefficients, we have calculated the composition of primitive liquid in equilibrium with phenocryst cores. The estimated liquid composition is similar to primitive basalt compositions from the Kane Fracture Zone except for a much higher Ca/(Ca + Na) ratio which resembles values for MAR plume basalts. The diversity in plagioclase morphologies and compositions is explained by mixing of melts at different stages of evolution and stored in separated but interconnected reservoirs, as previously suggested by Kuo and Kirkpatrick (1982, doi:10.1007/BF00376957).

Notes: AbstractA major issue for organizations planning for technological turnaround concerns the question of how to internalize the new technology. This article reports the findings of an exploratory research that addressed this problem. A multiple case study approach has been used to study and analyze the different strategies and organizational approaches to absorb alien technologies (in-house development, intercompany co-operation, purchase of technology, contract research, joint-venture, acquisition). On the basis of the results, a propositional framework has been developed which offers managers a perspective to develop a strategy with respect to the appropriate organizational design to ‘de-mature’ technologically mature business units.

Notes: Shortening design cycle times, without increasing design costs or sacrificing quality has become an important management goal. In this paper, we will provide a short overview of the literature on shortening design cycle times. Building on this, we want to establish how manufacturing and the manufacturing/R&D interface can contribute to shorter development cycle times. The European Manufacturing Futures database will be used to test some of the literature findings on a sample of large European Manufacturers.

Notes: SUMMARY. 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1 The importance of bacteria in the diet of deposit-feeding mayflies (Stenonema spp.) from the Ogeecnee River, a sixth order low-gradient blackwater river in Georgia, U.S.A., was determined. Stenonema are abundant and productive on snags in biackwater rivers in the southeastern Coastal Plain of the U.S.A. Bacteria are abundant in the seston in this river, and are a potentially important food source.2 Naturally occurring seston was fed to Stenonema larvae after bacterial DNA in the seston was labelled with methyl-[3H]thymidine. Larval respiration measurements and growth rate estimations were used to compare the amount of bacterial carbon assimilated and retained in larval tissue to the carbon requirements of the larvae.3 Stenonema larvae incorporated 8.7×107±1.3×107 bacteria larva−1 h−1 This was equivalent to 93±6% of their daily growth, and 47±3% of their total daily carbon needs. Larger larvae incorporated more bacterial biomass, but mass specific incorporation was not related to size. Ingestion of bacteria while eating seston accumulated on snags appears to be an important component of the diet of Stenonema larvae in these rivers.

Notes: A purified polyclonal antiserum directed against the isolated main 80kD IROMP (iron-regulated outer-membrane protein) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 detected only the 80 kD polypeptide of outer-membrane proteins from PAO1 cells grown in iron deficiency in Western blots. It was also shown to inhibit the uptake of 59Fe pyoverdin by PAO1 cells as well as its binding to purified outer membranes. Immunofluorescence experiments with intact PAO1 cells confirmed that the receptor is present only at the surface of cells grown under conditions of iron deficiency. All these data allow us to conclude that the 80 kD main IROMP of P. aeruginosa is indeed the receptor for the siderophore ferripyoverdin.

Notes: Capsule-deficient mutants of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B strain B 1940 were constructed by allelic replacement using the plasmids pMF120 and pMF121, which contain the flanking regions of the gene locus for the biosynthesis pathway of the group B meningococcal capsular polysaccharide. Southern blot analysis of chromosomal DNA of the capsule-deficient meningococcal strains confirmed the generation of large deletions in the chromosomal cps gene complex. The same strategy proved useful in constructing meningococcal strains with capsular types A, C., W 135, Y and Z.
