    Notes: Planar {110} channeling measurements with 1–2-MeV He+ ions have been used to investigate strained-layer structures of (100) GaAs/InxGa1−xAs/GaAs with x=0.07–0.17. Beam-steering effects in the surface GaAs layer are observed to have a major influence on {110} planar angular scans carried out in the InxGa1−xAs layers resulting generally in a double or more complex-shaped angular dip. A simple computer simulation has been developed which determines the main features of the experimental angular scan data. Comparison of simulation and experimental data allows a reasonable determination of the kink angle θK between the {110} planes for the surface GaAs and underlying strained layer. Only in limiting cases is it possible to unequivocally determine θK from the experimental data alone. They are as follows: (i) when θK=0; (ii) θK〉2ψ pc (ψ pc is the critical angle for {110} planar channeling); and (iii) when the thickness t of the top layer is thin (t(very-much-less-than)2d/ψ pc, where d is the {110} interplanar spacing).

    Notes: It is shown that intermediate statistics do not correspond to any physical process. The stationary probability distributions of intermediate statistics are not compatible with any mechanism which allows a variation between Fermi–Dirac and Bose–Einstein statistics. The binomial and negative binomial distributions, characterizing Fermi–Dirac and Bose–Einstein statistics, respectively, transform into the Poisson distribution, descriptive of classical statistics, as the number of energy cells increases without limit. These distributions are shown to be the laws of error leading to the average value as the most probable value.

    Notes: Abstract Using IRAS measurements, we find positive correlations between both the infrared to optical flux ratio (L FIR/L B) and infrared colour temperature (L 60/L 100) with optical surface brightness. These correlations can be understood by high surface brightness galaxies having (i) a high star formation rate, or (ii) a high-space density of stars and dust. In an attempt to interpret (ii) above, we have produced radiative transfer models for the dust absorption in a galactic disc. These models indicate that the highest surface brightness galaxies may be the most dust obscured (i.e., optically thick) and that the total luminosity (and, hence, mass) of these galaxies may be considerably underestimated.

    Notes: Abstract We propose an evolutionary model for dwarf galaxies in which initially metal-poor gas-rich dwarf irregular (dI) galaxies evolve through bursting Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) stages and eventually fade from the BCD phase to become dwarf ellipticals (dE). During the bursting phase the surface brightness of the galaxy increases rapidly due to enhanced OB star formation. The source of fuel for the intermittent bursts of star formation is assumed to be primordial gas which continues to collapse onto the already formed central structure. The dE galaxies form as a result of eventual gas depletion through star formation. With this proposed dI↔BCD→dE evolutionary sequence we can explain the similar photometric structure of the different dwarf types and the differences in their star formation rates, surface brightnesses,Hi contents and metallicities. A final central BCD burst can account for the nucleation in brighter dEs and their residual star formation, while earlier more widespread star formation bursts would fade to give an irregular dI. Inflow of gas may allow dEs to be less flattened than dIs. Using galaxy fading and metallicity models we can reproduce the observed number ratiosN(dI)∶N(BCD) andN(dI)∶N(dE) and also the observed metallicity magnitude relation of local dwarf spheroidal galaxies.

    Notes: Abstract The analogy between blackbody radiation and a phase equilibrium between vapor and liquid is drawn by deriving the Clapeyron equation in which the two probability distributions of blackbody radiation play the role of the two phases. The pressure of one of these distributions, which becomes negative at sufficiently high photon energies, is analogous to a negative pressure tending to break up a liquid. A similar type of critical phenomenon should be observed for blackbody radiation.

    Notes: Summary The effect of nisoldipine on renal function after 6 weeks treatment was investigated in hypertensive patients with and without renal impairment. Nisoldipine was well tolerated and an effective antihypertensive agent when administered over a period of 6 weeks. There were no significant changes in glomerular filtration, cardiac output, plasma renin activity or serum biochemistry during nisoldipine administration. Effective renal plasma flow was unaffected by treatment in the patients with normal renal function, but in the patients with renal insufficiency, the value decreased by a mean of 12%. Nisoldipine had no major untoward effects on renal function after 6 weeks administration, but minor changes in renal haemodynamics in the patients with renal insufficiency would suggest that careful monitoring of renal function is indicated in such patients.

    Notes: It is very important to understand the equilibrium and dynamic characteristics of biospecific adsorption (affinity chromatography) for both scientific and application purposes. Experimental equilibrium and dynamic column data are presented on the adsorption of lysozyme onto antibody immobilized on nonporous silica particles. The Langmuir model is found to represent the equilibrium experimental data satisfactorily, and the equilibrium association constants and heats of adsorption have been estimated for two systems with different ligand densities. The effects of nonspecific interactions are more pronounced in the system with low-density ligand. The dynamic interaction kinetic parameters are estimated by matching the predictions of a fixed-bed model with the experimental breakthrough curves. The agreement between theory and experiment is good for the initial phases of breakthrough, where the mechanism of biospecific adsorption is dominant. In the later phase (saturation neighborhood) of breakthrough, the effects of nonspecific interactions appear to be greater in the low-density ligand system. The kinetics of the nonspecific interactions were estimated from the data of the later phase of breakthrough and were found to be considerably slower than those attributed to biospecific adsorption.
