    Notes: The electron photoionization cross-section spectra of the Si:Pd EA level at various temperatures are obtained for the first time. It is shown that the cross-section spectra around the threshold energy shift to lower energy when the temperature rises. Instead of the variation of the energy gap or the broadening effect of lattice relaxation, photothermal excitation via an excited state at 45 meV below the bottom of the conduction band causes this energy shift. The energy from the ground state to the excited state derived from both optical and thermal data is 370 meV.

    Notes: Small-angle scattering techniques including laser light scattering (LLS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) have been useful tools to measure the static and dynamic properties (in terms of critical fluctuations) of fluids, fluid mixtures, polymer and micellar solutions, polymer blends and metallic alloys. A brief review is given of recent results in critical-phenomena experiments using small-angle scattering techniques. Topics of current interest are pointed out, and a guide to the vast literature on critical opalescence is provided. Coil-to-globule transition in polymer solutions has been a classic experimental challenge over the past decade. In order to succeed in reaching the collapsed regime, it becomes important to realize that single coil contraction of a linear polymer molecule in solution takes place in the neighborhood of phase separations. By using the recent development of a small-angle light-scattering spectrometer and by taking advantage of a successful polymer fractionation experiment, the transition behavior of linear polystyrene in cyclohexane from the Θ state to the collapsed regime can be characterized based on both the radius of gyration and the hydrodynamic radius.

    Notes: An analysis is given of the dual transformation and also the strip method which can yield the ideal octagonal quasilattice as well as its approximants. An ideal octagonal tiling consisting of 45° rhombi and squares can be derived from the projection of a 4D cubic lattice within an irrational 2D subspace onto an irrational 2D hyperplane, and its Fourier transform matches well the eightfold electron diffraction pattern of the Cr-Ni-Si octagonal quasicrystal. The approximant of an octagonal tiling corresponds to the rearrangement of two kinds of tiles in an ideal quasilattice which destroys the exact quasiperiodic sequence. It is shown that the defects introduced to change the aperiodic order into a regular approximant correspond to a linear phason strain along certain directions, and this will break the eightfold rotational symmetry. The Fourier transform agrees well with the experimental electron diffraction pattern displaying only fourfold symmetry.

    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht In dieser Arbeit wird ein Finite-Elemente-Schema vorgestellt, das sowohl zur Simulation der Temperatur- und Formänderungsfelder als auch zur Spannungssimulation im Stranggießprozeß verwendet werden kann. Eine stationäre Wärmeübertragungsgleichung, einschließlich der Wärmefreisetzung als Folge des Erstarrungsvorganges, wird unter Berücksichtigung des Einflusses der Zuflußmenge formuliert. Für die Spannungsanalyse wurde ein viskoplastisches Modell entwickelt, welches elastisch-viskoplastische Festkörper und auch zähflüssige Fluide zu beschreiben vermag. Als Beispiel wurde mittels FEM ein Stranggießprozeß simuliert. Die Berechnungsergebnisse für Temperatur, Verformung, Strangschalendicke und Spannungen in der Bramme werden diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary A finite element scheme is presented in this paper to simulate fields of temperature and deformation as well as stress in the steady continuous casting process. A steady heat conduction equation incorporating heat generation due to solidification is formulated when considering the effect of flow rate. A viscoplastic constitutive model capable to describing elastic-viscoplastic solids as well as a viscous fluid is developed for the stress analysis. As an illustrative example a vertical continuous casting process is simulated by use of the finite element method, and the calculated results of temperature, deformation and stress in a slab are discussed.

    Notes: Summary We report the construction of an RFLP genetic map of rice (Oryza sativa) chromosomes. The map is comprised of 135 loci corresponding to clones selected from a PstI genomic library. This molecular map covers 1,389 cM of the rice genome and exceeds the current classical maps by more than 20%. The map was generated from F2 segregation data (50 individuals) from a cross between an indica and javanica rice cultivar. Primary trisomics were used to assign linkage groups to each of the 12 rice chromosomes. Seventy-eight percent of the clones assayed revealed RFLPs between the two parental cultivars, indicating that rice contains a significant amount of RFLP variation. Strong correlations between size of hybridizing restriction fragments and level of polymorphism indicate that a significant proportion of the RFLPs in rice are generated by insertions/delections. This conclusion is supported by the occurrence of null alleles for some clones (presumably created by insertion or deletion events). One clone, RG229, hybridized to sequences in both the indica and javanica genomes, which have apparently transposed since the divergence of the two cultivars from their last common ancestor, providing evidence for sequence movement in rice. As a by product of this mapping project, we have discovered that rice DNA is less C-methylated than tomato or maize DNA. Our results also suggest the notion that a large fraction of the rice genome (approximately 50%) is single copy.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the appearance potentials of ammonia cluster ions (NH3) n + and (NH3) n −2NH 4 + using the threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) time-of-flight method are performed. The results agree well with other available data, however, solvation energies derived from these and from thermochemical data show significant discrepancies. The energetics for ammonia clusters are elucidated from various points of view.

    Notes: Anaytical electron microscopy (AEM) consists of extending the information generally delivered by the electron microscope (topography, structure) with a knowledge of the chemical and electronic properties. Its major advantage is to perform higly sensitive spectroscopies, such as electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), on nanovolumes of materials defined and localized within their environment. It is therfore well suited to the study of complex specimens, such as catalytical products, in which there is a competion of bulk and surface properties. Metallic Co particles on supporting CeO2 layers provide an illustrative example of AEM capabilities. Atomic resolution images of surfaces and interfaces are associated with EELS spectroscopy and EELS maps to obtain a detailed view of the local arrangement of the different components, at successive steps of the chemical reaction. Nevertheless, beaminduced chemical tranformations of the system have been observed at the atomic scale. Radiation damage therefore constitutes the final limitation.

    Notes: Reflection electron microscopy (REM), reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), reflection electron energy-loss spectroscopy (REELS), and energy dispersion x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) have been comprehensively used as a technique, termed reflection high resolution analytical electron microscopy (RHRAEM), for studying the structures of the bulk crystal GaAs (110) surfaces by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The simultaneous observations of surface topography imaging, the surface diffraction mechanism with RHEED, surface atomic inner-shell excitations with REELS, and surface chemical compositions with EDX provide a systematic description of the atomic structure and chemical structure of the surface. The surface channelling effect has been observed in GaAs (110) with REELS, which may provide a basis for localizing surface foreign atoms with ALCHEMI. The theoretically predicted surface-resonance wave has been observed directly in the RHEED pattern; the surface-captured Bragg reflection wave have been identified. It is shown that surface chemical compositions can be determined by analyzing the EDX spectra obtained in the REM case. Finally, the surface monolayer resonance characteristic of the RHRAEM has been confirmed by calculations with dynamical RHEED theory.
