Description / Table of Contents: Sulfonamide Substituted Thionocompounds as Ligands in Copper(II) Chelates and as Extractants for the Late 3d-Element IonsWith copper(II) thiono ligands containing arenesulfonamido or arenesulfonylhydrazido functions as a second donor group (STAT-, PST-, BPTS-, BMTH-, and TPTH-, meaning of the abbreviations see text) react in a different way. Normal 1,2-chelates are formed by PST-, BMTH-, and TPTH-. But the reactions with STAT- and BPTS- are connected with a redox process and copper(I) complexes are obtained. PST- is an flexidentate ligand, forming both five- and four-membered chelate rings. Probably the formation of the two Cu(PST)2 isomeres depends on this property. The new chelates are characterized by ESR and ESCA spectra. As extractants for copper(II), the compounds STAT-H, BPTS-H, and BPTH-H, forming five- or six-membered rings, are comparable to the arenesulfonylthioureas which form only four-membered ones. But PST-H is an attractive extractant for copper(II), nickel(II), cobalt(II), and zinc(II). As to the pH1/2 values PST-H reaches the widely used extractant dithizone.

Description / Table of Contents: Complex Formation of the Late 3d-Elements with Arenesulfonylthioureas, Arenesulfonyl-monothio-, and Arenesulfonyldithiocarbamic Acid EstersArenesulfonylthioureas (SPT-H, SAT-H, SMT-H), arenesulfonylmonothio-, and arenesulfonyldithiocarbamic acid esters (STCO-H, STCS-H) form neutral 1,2-chelates with copper(II), nickel(II), and cobalt(II), but not with iron(II) and manganese(II). Basing on the ESCA data, ESR and VIS spectra differences of the structure are proved: Four-membered rings (coordination of the sulfonamide function by nitrogen) are present in the copper(II) chelates, but six-membered ones (coordination of the sulfonamide function by one oxygen atom of the sulfonyl group) in the nickel(II) chelates. In the case of the complexes Co(SPT)2, Co(SAT)2, and Co(SMT)2 both types of structure are realized by the formation of a high-spin and a low-spin isomer. The bonding behaviour of the ligands in the new complexes is discussed and in this connection both the IR spectra of SAT-H and its complexes and the selectivity of the copper(II) extraction from acidic solutions by the ligands STCO-H and STCS-H are explained.

Description / Table of Contents: Extraction of 3d-Metal Ions by Bidendate Sulfonamides. I. Ligands with Sulfur or Heterocyclic Nitrogen as a Second Donor AtomThe properties of 2-acetylpyridine-p-toluensulfonylhydrazone (APSH - H), arensulfonylthioureas (I), and the esters of arensulfonylmonothiocarbamic acid (II) or arensulfonyldithiocarbamic acid (III) as extractants for the late 3d-metal ions are proved. APSH-H is comparable to the proprietary extractant LIX 34. But, because of the special structure of the corresponding 1,2-chelates, the pH1/2-values of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) are ≈2 units lower. The pKs-values, measured in dioxane-water mixtures (75 per cent v/v), increase in the order III 〈 II 〈 I. In aqueous solutions compounds of type III are acids of medium strength. In the case of compounds of type I the substituents of the non-sulfonated nitrogen have a strong influence on the pKs-values (ΔpKs = 4.6). Among the late 3d-elements, the ligands II and III extract only copper(II) (pH1/2 ∼2.7 or ∼1.6), the ligands I extract zinc(II), cobalt(II), and nickel(II) as well, but not iron(II) and iron(III). The reasons of this unique behaviour are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Complex Formation by Sulfonamide Substituted ThionoligandsThionoligands containing arenesulfonamido or arenesulfonylhydrazido functions as a second donor group (STAT-, PST-, BPTS- and TPTH-, meaning of the abbreviations see text) form 1,2 complexes with nickel(II), cobalt(II), and zinc(II). The six-membered chelates M(STAT)2 (M = Co, Ni) are high-spin (\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \rm{S} \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \ominus $\end{document} coordination). On the other hand no coordination of the RSO2N group is observed in the complexes M(PST)2 (M = Co, Mn, Fe), but the formation of a four membered ring including one nitrogen atom of the heterocycle. This statement is primarily based on a comparison with complexes of teh structurally related ligands PPT- and CPT- containing no \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \rm{RSO}_2 \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \ominus $\end{document} groups. Evidently in the chelat Co(BPTS)2 the anionic RSO2N group is a weak bidentate donor.
