Notizen: With the view to study heterozygosity and heterogeneity as to their effects and interactions on yield and yield stability in maize, the following four types of population structure were formed from eight inbred lines: Homogeneous populations of homozygous plants (the eight inbred lines themselves); heterogeneous populations of homozygous plants (four blends containing four lines each); homogeneous populations of heterozygous plants (16 single crosses); heterogeneous populations of heterozygous plants (four blends containing four single crosses each, and four double crosses). This material was grown in three environments (years). At both levels of heterozygosity, the blends did not outyield the means of their respective components grown in pure stands. yield stability of the various structural groups was ranked differently by ecovalence and the mean square for deviations from regression. By transforming the deviation mean squares into coefficients of variation it was possible to reveal improvements of stability not only by heterogeneity but also by heterozygosity, and additionally, an interaction of both factors in the sense of a diminishing return.

Notizen: Sixteen essential elements along with cadmium and lead were determined in tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) and fresh and canned tomato juice by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Samples were taken during the canning process to determine where changes in element content occurred. The concentration of each sample was compared statistically to other samples taken at different stages of the process. RDAs and estimated safe and adequate daily dietary intake values as well as percent retention values were calculated. Retention of all elements, except chloride and sodium, ranged from 91–160%.

Notizen: Sixteen essential elements along with cadmium and lead were determined in fresh and canned peas (Pisum sarivum L.). Samples were taken during the canning process to determine where changes in element content occurred. The concentration of each sample was compared statistically to other samples taken at different stages of the process. Canned peas contained significantly lower concentrations of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, silicon, and zinc than fresh peas. As sodium chloride was added during the canning process, higher concentrations of chloride and sodium were found in the canned product. A 100g serving of drained canned peas supplied less than 11% of the RDAs or of the estimated safe and adequate daily dietary intakes except for chloride and sodium. Retention of all elements, except chloride and sodium, ranged from 24–86%.

Notizen: The limnological characteristics of the Gambia River have resulted in a seasonally dynamic fish composition and a complicated artisanal fishery. The estimate of catch (2700t year−1) for the fishery during 1980 is low compared to potential yield as predicted by empirical relations with river channel length, drainage basin area, floodplain area, and the morphoedaphic index. A decrease in catch per unit effort was weakly correlated to increasing effort during March-July in the lower river. For the overall Gambian fishery, however, temporal changes in catch per unit effort were not correlated with changes in effort. Predictions of yield are consistently higher than catch estimates for the fishery and suggest underexploitation of the stocks. Many assumptions of the predicting techniques, however, are unsatisfied, and the year-to-year variability of the Gambia River catch is unknown. Consensus seems to emerge if only crude evaluations of a fishery are needed, but the predicting techniques do not provide the degree of resolution required for most management decisions.

Notizen: : First order drainage channels originate when the tractive force exerted by flowing water is sufficient to move surface sediment. The amount of runoff available to move sediment is a function of geologic and climatic characteristics. An experimental analysis showed that soils derived from fine grained rocks had lower infiltration rates and higher runoff volume than soils derived from coarser grained rocks in a semi-arid climate. Root density and penetration increased in a more humid climate and increased infiltration rates. The number of first order channels was inversely proportional to the infiltration capacity of the soil. Each first order channel acts as a source area for surface runoff. The distribution of first order channel distances from the gage determines the timing of the delivery of water to the gage. A comparison of the frequency histogram of first order channel distances for drainage basins in Pennsylvania and their hydxographs of runoff from general storms showed marked similarity. This close correspondence indicated the shape of the surface runoff hydrograph and was largely controlled by the distribution of first order channel distances.

Notizen: A detached leaf technique was used to evaluate components of resistance to both early and late leafspot caused by Cercospora arachidicola Hori and Cercosporidium personatum (Berk, and Curt.) Deighton, respectively, for F2 plants of two peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) crosses (FESR 5-P2-B1 /PI 269685 and PI 35068Q/GP-NC 343), No negative correlations were obtained when comparing components of resistance to early leafspot with components of resistance to late leafspot, indicating that the resistances are inherited independently. A small number of F2 plants had greater partial resistance to both leafspots than their parents when evaluated by an index including percent necrotic area, latent period and sporulation. Broad sense heritabilities of resistance components were moderate to high (0.4 to 0.8) for the F2 populations. A visual sporulation rating scale was significantly correlated (0.8 to 0.9) with conidia per lesion and conidia per necrotic area. The data suggest that peanut cultivars resistant to both leafspots can be developed.

Notizen: This paper presents an economic-ecological simulation model for environmental policy analysis, developed at the Institute for environmental Studies. We first discuss the concepts and context of the model and then present an outline of the structure and a selection of the results of a case study on the impacts of air pollution control policies in the Netherlands.

Notizen: Black beans stored at 30° or 40°C and 80% relative humidity showed marked increases in firmness and decreases in in vitro digestibility of proteins. Changes in these properties were small when beans were stored at 5°C and 50% relative humidity. The adverse effects of poor storage conditions could be practically eliminated by soaking beans in salt solutions instead of water. The changes in firmness and digestibility were accompanied by changes in the detectable concentrations of tannins and phytates. Protein digestibility appears to be reduced by interactions between protein and tannins, especially high molecular weight tannins. Concentration of these tannins is affected by poly-phenol oxidase activity. Firmness increased and protein digestibility decreased as the phytic acid content decreased.

Notizen: An acceptor set size measure was successfully employed to examine shelf life trade-offs when fresh lake whitefish fillets (Coregonus clupeaformis) were dipped in 0.0, 2.5 or 5.0% (w/v) potassium sorbate, packaged in low, intermediate, or higher barrier bags, placed in 100% CO2 modified atmosphere packaging system and held under refrigeration at less than 3°C. When sorbate was varied, shifts in acceptor size indicated that fillets dipped in 5.0% sorbate had the longest shelf life, exceeding 14 days. No significant difference was found when film permeability was varied. For all barrier films, shelf life exceeded 15 days although the low barrier bag had smaller acceptor sizes.
