Beschreibung: NGC 7027 was observed with a multichannel grating spectrometer from 5.2 to 7.5 microns at a spectral resolving power of 120-200. Two new dust emission features are resolved at 5.62 and 6.95 microns, and for the first time the Ni II fine-structure line at 6.64 microns is detected. It is shown that a single molecular dust constituent might account for six of the nine observed dust features between 2 and 14 microns. The strength of the Ni II line indicates either that Ni is not depleted in the neutral gas, or that the line is formed at high density.

Beschreibung: Infrared spectrophotometry of the R-type carbon star HD 19557 is presented. Two unusual spectroscopic features are seen: a 3.1 micron band is lacking and a 2.8 micron band is present. Identifications are proposed for three previously unreported stellar absorption bands with electronic sequences of C2, CN, and C2H. The latter is proposed to be responsible for the 2.8 micron feature. The atmospheric structure of the star is studied with synthetic spectra, and an effective temperature between 2600 K and 3000 K is suggested. No SiC emission is seen at 11.3 microns, indicating that grain formation is not a viable process around the star. The lack of dust in R stars may suggest a salient difference between R and N types.

Beschreibung: The importance of coordinating different types of observations of a comet is illustrated in terms of spectral data on Comet Bowell. Photometric data in 1980 indicated that OH emissions were occurring when the comet was still more than 4 AU from the sun. Further measurements were arranged with the IUE satellite, the photoelectric scanner at Cerro Tololo and the IR telescope on Mauna Kea. Several sizes of diaphragms were used in order to estimate variations with respect to aperture. Calculations were made to quantify the wavelengths observed as a function of the grains' cross-sections. The OH emission was confirmed by the spectrographic and photometric data. It is suggested that sufficient dark materials are present on the cometary surface to have enhanced the absorption of solar radiation to levels sufficient for heating and dissociating surface ice particles.

Beschreibung: Measurements of forbidden Ne II lines at 12.8 microns and forbidden S IV at 10.5 microns are presented along a line through and perpendicular to the ionization front in M17 SW. These observations give evidence for ionization stratification within the front, with the most highly ionized material lying toward the east, opposite to the peak molecular emission and far-IR flux. This result supports the picture of M17 SW as a region where a molecular cloud is heated externally. The ionization equilibrium within the ridge and the nebular energetics suggest that the M17 H II region is largely excited by one or more nearby early O stars. The properties of the recently discovered radio point source in M17 are discussed.

Beschreibung: The first detection of interference fringes by VLBI at a wavelength of 3.4 mm during observations of 3C84 are reported. The compact source in the nucleus of 3C84 was observed for a 9-hr period on the 485 km baseline between the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and the Hat Creek Observatory. The fringe data are given and the derivation of the correlated flux densities is described. The findings are discused in the context of previous obervations. The results demonstrate that there are no unforeseen technical difficulties associated with millimeter VLBI, and that the sensitivity of existing systems is sufficient to observe objects brighter than a few Jy. The observations are consistent with the millimeter wavelength radio structure of 3C84 being more compact than its centimeter wavelength structure.

Beschreibung: Ramatry, et al. proposed a model to account for the 5 March 1979 gamma ray burst in terms of a neutron star corequake and subsequent shock heating of the neutron star atmosphere. This model is extended by examining the overall energetics and characteristics of these shocks, taking into account the e(+)-e(-) pair production behind the shock. The effects of a dipole magnetic field in the shock jump conditions are also examined and it is concluded that the uneven heating produced by such a field can account for the temperature difference between pole and equator implied by the pulsating phase of the burst. The overall energetics and distribution of energy between e(+)-e(-) pairs and photons appear to be in agreement with observations if this event is at a distance of 55 kpc as implied by its association with the Large Magellanic Cloud. Beschreibung: New and refined mesurements of the pulse period of the X-ray pulsar in the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 are presented. The data were obtained with the Monitor proportional Counter on board the HEAO 2 observatory. The period measurements were obtained by analyzing pulse arrival times determined by cross-correlating sample pulse profiles with a master template. The period history for the source and a representative 0.15 s X-ray light curve are shown. The X-ray measurements alone lead to a refined value of the period derivative of (1.5382 + or -0.0024) x 10 to the -12th s/s, while including the results of more recent radio observations leads to a value of (1.54029 + or -0.00095) x 10 to the -12th s/s. These results indicate a hard-point source surrounded by diffuse nebular emission.

Beschreibung: A list of 103 faint red stars in a 0.7-square-degree area located near NGC 6820/23 on the galactic plane in the constellation Vulpecula is presented. The stars were chosen from Near Infrared Photographic Sky Survey visual and near-IR photographic pairs and were selected for their visual faintness as well as their red colors. Positions, approximate magnitudes, and finding charts for these stars are presented. It is noted that two members of the list, 1548C858 and 1548C869, have already been determined to be faint, pure S stars.

Beschreibung: The luminosity of the brightest cluster galaxies remains the best standard candle for observational cosmology. Studies of over 250 relatively nearby clusters show that the luminosity of these objects within an aperture of constant metric diameter has a dispersion of only 0.35 mag. The observations considered by Schneider et al. (1983) were acquired to measure the aperture luminosities of the brightest cluster galaxies. However, the data base, because of its high signal-to-noise ratio and large spatial coverage, allows several other investigations to be performed. In the present investigation, surface photometry of the brightness three galaxies within approximately 250 kpc of the cluster center is presented, taking into account the cores of 83 Abell clusters. The relevance of the photometry to cosmological studies is also discussed. It is found that dynamical friction does play an extremely important role in determining properties of brightest cluster galaxies and cluster morphology.

Beschreibung: A new class of models is advanced for interpreting the relationship of radioactive abundances in the early solar system to their average concentration in the interstellar medium. The model assumes that fresh radioactivities are ejected from supernovae into the hot interstellar medium, and that the time scales for changes of phase into molecular clouds determine how much survives for formation therein of the solar system. A more realistic and physically motivated understanding of the low observed concentrations of I-129, Pu-244, and Pd-107 may result.
