Notes: Abstract The differential flux and energy spectra of solar cosmic ray heavy ions of He, C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe were determined in the energy interval E = 3–30 MeV amu-1 for two large solar events of January 24, 1971 and September 1, 1971 in rocket flights made from Ft. Churchill. From these data the relative abundances and the abundance enhancement factors, ξ, relative to photospheric abundances were obtained for these elements. Similar results were obtained for a third event on August 4, 1972 from the available published data. Characteristic features of ξ vs nuclear charge dependences were deduced for five energy intervals. The energy dependence of ξ for He shows a moderate change by a factor of about 3, whereas for Fe, ξ shows a very dramatic decrease by a factor of 10–20 with increasing energy. It is inferred that these abundance enhancements of solar cosmic ray heavy ions at low energies seem to be related to their ionization states (Z *) and hence studies of Z * can give information on the important parameters such as temperature and density in the accelerating region in the Sun.

Notes: Abstract Blood glucose, tissue carbohydrate, total plasma and tissue protein and plasma electrolyte concentrations were estimated in male toads, exposed to simulated high altitude of 12,000, 18,000 and 24,000 feet respectively for 48 hours of continuous exposure in a decompression chamber. Blood glucose and muscle carbohydrate were decreased significantly in animals exposed to 18,000 and 24,000 feet altitude, without having any change in the liver carbohydrate. Muscle carbohydrate was also decreased in 12,000 feet altitude exposed animals. Plasma protein content was increased significantly in 18,000 and 24,000 feet altitude exposed animals, whereas no such change was noted in tissue protein content. A slight increase of plasma sodium concentration was found in animals exposed to 24,000 feet, and a decrease of potassium concentration was also noted in 18,000 and 24,000 feet exposed animals. Magnesium concentration of the plasma was increased in 18,000 and 24,000 feet exposed animals. This animal had also shown an eosinopenia, lymphopenia and neutrophilia when exposed at 24,000 feet high altitude.

Notes: Abstract The effect of residual (built up in continued fertilizer experiments) and applied P in Fatehpur loamy sand and Jodhan sandy loam soils of two long term experiments on its availability and uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was studied using32P in greenhouse experiment. Dry matter yield increased significantly with carry over P. Response in the absence of residual P was observed up to a direct application of 134 kg P ha−1, whereas, in the presence of carry over P, the response was confined upto 67 kg P ha−1 at site A. The response was however, observed up to 67 kg P ha−1 irrespective of carry over P at site B. Total P uptake by wheat was significantly increased at all levels of residual P. However, it did not differ signficantly among levels of residual P when these were high. The uptake of soil P (residual) increased signficantly with increase in the dose of directly applied P, indicating that addition of inorganic P fertilizer tends to mobilize the native soil P. Per cent utilization of fertilizer P was enhanced in soils having residual P from continuous application of both inorganic and organic P sources.

Notes: Summary The E. coli dnaX and dnaZ gene products, essential for E. coli DNA replication, serve in chain elongation. Both genes, located at 10.4 min and previously cloned into a λ vector and a ColE1 plasmid, were subcloned into pBR322 (pMK212). The coding region for the dnaX and dnaZ genes was localized to a 2.2-kb segment by deletion analysis of pMK212. The products of dnaX and dnaZ genes were identified as 78 kd and 52 kd polypeptides, respectively, by using maxicells bearing deletion clones of pMK212. Peptide mapping after limited proteolysis showed that the dnaZ gene product (52 kd) is a part of the dnaX gene product (78 kd), thus accounting for the coding capacity of the 2.2 kb region for both the dnaX and dnaZ genes. The dnaX gene product appears to be the τ subunit of DNA polymerase III holoenzyme; the dnaZ gene product is confirmed as the γ subunit of the holoenzyme.

Notes: Polystyrene has been chemically modified by Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction with trimellitic anhydride in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride as catalyst. The product has been characterized in respect of its structure and physicochemical properties by measuring its total capacity, thermal stability and the behaviour to pH metric titration. The thermal characteristics of the trimellitic anhydride modified polystyrene have been compared with the same for phthalic anhydride and pyromellitic dianhydride modified polystyrene in the light of their structural characteristics.
