Notes: Raman spectra of thallous carbonate have been studied to c. 52 kbar and mid-IR spectra to 36 kbar. Details of the assignment have also been established using single-crystal IR reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. Phase transitions were found near 13 and 38 kbar on the basis of the Raman evidence, thus supporting the earlier conclusions of Meisalo and Kalliomaki based on x-ray powder and optical results. Analysis of possible space group relations between phases III (ambient) and IV showed that IV must be orthorhombic and adopt one of the D2hn groups, where n = 17, 19, 21, 25 or 28. Structural relationships between the phases are discussed.

Description: The use of satellite images obtained from various dates is essential for crop forecast systems. In order to make possible a multitemporal analysis, it is necessary that images belonging to each acquisition have pixel-wise correspondence. A system developed to obtain, register and record image segments from LANDSAT images in computer compatible tapes is described. The translational registration of the segments is performed by correlating image edges in different acquisitions. The system was constructed for the Burroughs B6800 computer in ALGOL language.

Description: The 250-2500 km baseline vectors between radio telescopes located at Tidbinbilla (DSS43) near Canberra, Parkes, Fleurs (X3) near Sydney, Hobart and Alice Springs were determined from radio interferometric observations of extragalactic sources. The observations were made during two 24-hour sessions on 26 April and 3 May 1982, and one 12-hour night-time session on 28 April 1982. The 275 km Tidbinbilla - Parkes baseline was measured with an accuracy of plus or minus 6 cm. The remaining baselines were measured with accuracies ranging from 15 cm to 6 m. The higher accuracies were achieved for the better instrumented sites of Tidbinbilla, Parkes and Fleurs. The data reduction technique and results of the experiment are discussed.

Description: The techniques applied to MSS-LANDSAT data in the land-use mapping of Criciuma region (Santa Catarina state, Brazil) are presented along with the results of a classification accuracy estimate tested on the resulting map. The MSS-LANDSAT data digital processing involves noise suppression, features selection and a hybrid classifier. The accuracy test is made through comparisons with aerial photographs of sampled points. The utilization of digital processing to map the classes agricultural lands, forest lands and urban areas is recommended, while the coal refuse areas should be mapped visually.

Description: The utilization of remote sensing data for monitoring land use changes by means of digital image analysis is described. The following data were utilized: LANDSAT data from September 4, 1975, April 24, 1978, and September 8, 1981; LANDSAT paper photography data; area IV color photographs; IBGE topography maps, and auxiliary data about the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. Three kinds of analyses of digital images were carried out. The project identified and mapped major classes of land use areas including urban areas, coal deposits, agricultural areas, forests, lakes, and flood plains. Five areas directly affected by coal exploration southeast of Santa Catarina are identified and described. In addition, the classification system used for organizing data about land cover in a hierarchical arrangement is presented. The project made use of two remote sensing data sources: data of MSS spectral (Mulitspectral Scanner System)/LANDSAT on a scale of 1:100,000 with approximately 80 m resolution, and infrared color aerial photographs on a scale of 1:45,000 with approximately 5 m resolution. Therefore, the classification system included three levels, two selected to be compatible with aerial photography data and the third to conform to the resolution of MSS/LANDSAT.

Description: Progress on defining the minimum Landsat-4 data characteristics needed for agricultural information in the U.S. and assessing the value-added capability of current technology to extract that level of information is reported. Emphasis is laid on the thematic mapper (TM) data and the ground processing facilities. TM data from all 7 bands for a rural Arkansas scene were examined in terms of radiometric, spatial, and geometric fidelity characteristics. Another scene sensed over Iowa was analyzed using three two-channel data sets. Although the TM data were an improvement over MSS data, no value differential was perceived. However, the development of further analysis techniques is still necessary to determine the actual worth of the improved sensor capabilities available with the TM, which actually has an MSS within itself.

Notes: Methods are described to extract and measure 2,3-bis(3-hydroxybenzyl)-γ-butyrolactone (enterolactone) and 2,3-bis(3-hydroxybenzyl)butane-1,4-diol (enterodiol) from physiological fluids. They are based on the use of stable labelled analogues of each compound as internal standards with end point assay being by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The methods were developed to quantify enterolactone and enterodiol in experiments designed to investigate the significance and source of these compounds in man and animals. Examples of studies on human ovarian blood and investigations of their excretion in urine following dietary manipulation are described.

Notes: The simultaneous acquisition of both positive ion and negative ion data under chemical ionization mass spectrometric conditions can aid in the confirmation of assignments made by electron impact gas chromatography mass spectrometry or electron capture gas chromatography. Pulsed positive ion negative ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry coupled with fused-silica capillary column gas chromatographic methods is shown to be useful in environmental and hazardous waste sample analysis. The chemical ionization conditions which maximize sensitivity and the amount of molecular ion information for the priority pollutants are presented. Replicates of response factors for these compounds show good precision. Saturation is observed about 10 ng for those pesticides which give linear responses from 50 pg to 1-10 ng.

Notes: The spin-lattice relaxation rates of the aromatic, alkene, hydroxyl, methine and methyl protons of 19 steroid derivatives have been measured using the null point method. A simple procedure is described whereby the R1 values of molecules which have different motional tumbling rates can be directly inter-compared, and it is shown that such ‘normalized’ relaxation data can provide novel insight concerning both the geometry and the local molecular motion of these substances in solution.

Notes: Halogenation reactions, both brominations and chlorinations, of haloorganics lead to di- or often polyhalogenated products. A major mechanistic question concerning these reactions always remains unanswered; whether they proceed by direct substitution or whether they proceed by a process involving an elimination-readdition sequence. The question can be answered by carrying out the reactions using isotopically enriched halogen. A method of analysis has been devised, using high resolution mass spectrometry, which determines the isotopic distribution in each of the individual halogen atoms. The details of this procedure are presented in this report and examples of its use from several mechanistic investigations are presented.
