Beschreibung: Conceptual designs of two monodisperse spray nozzles are described and the rationale used in each design is discussed. The nozzles were designed to eliminate present problems in agricultural aviation applications, such as ineffective plant coverage, drift due to small droplets present in the spray being dispersed, and nonuniform swath coverages. Monodisperse atomization techniques are reviewed and a synopsis of the information obtained concerning agricultural aviation spray applications is presented.

Beschreibung: A hybrid suction surface which combines favorable aspects of both uniformly porous and discrete opening suction surfaces has been evaluated experimentally for use with incompressible turbulent boundary layers. The surface consisted of an array of closely spaced slots aligned in the direction of the freestream flow. Direct drag and mean boundary layer velocity profile measurements showed that the slotted surface had nominally the same suction characteristics as a uniformly porous surface.

Beschreibung: Shapes and stability of surface-tension-endowed drops rotating rigidly at fixed angular momentum are calculated by finite-element analysis. A new family of asymmetric two-lobed drop shapes is discovered that branches from, and rejoins, the Pik-Pichak family of symmetric two-lobed shapes. The computations are verified for axisymmetric and symmetric two-lobed drop shape by comparison with previous approximations.

Beschreibung: Computer applications to instruction in any field may be divided into two broad generic classes: computer-managed instruction and computer-assisted instruction. The division is based on how frequently the computer affects the instructional process and how active a role the computer affects the instructional process and how active a role the computer takes in actually providing instruction. There are no inherent characteristics of remote sensing education to preclude the use of one or both of these techniques, depending on the computer facilities available to the instructor. The characteristics of the two classes are summarized, potential applications to remote sensing education are discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of computer applications to the instructional process are considered.

Beschreibung: The need for degree programs in remote sensing is considered. Any education program which claims to train remote sensing specialists must include expertise in the physical principles upon which remote sensing is based. These principles dictate the limits of engineering and design, computer analysis, photogrammetry, and photointerpretation. Faculty members must be hired to provide emphasis in those five areas.

Beschreibung: The exchange of stabilities is demonstrated for a system with harmonic boundary conditions. The motion of fluid in the presence of temperatures gradients is described. It is shown that this principle holds under free, but not rigid or semirigid, boundary conditions.

Beschreibung: Equilibrium shapes and stability of rotating drops held together by surface tension are found by computer-aided analysis that uses expansions in finite-element basis functions. Shapes are calculated as extrema of appropriate energies. Stability and relative stability are determined from curvatures of the energy surface in the neighborhood of the extremum. Families of axisymmetric, two-, three-, and four-lobed drop shapes are traced systematically. Bifurcation and turning points are located and the principle of exchange of stabilities is tested. The axisymmetric shapes are stable at low rotation rates but lose stability at the bifurcation to two-lobed shapes. Two-lobed drops isolated with constant angular momentum are stable. The results bear on experiments designed to further those of Plateau (1863).

Beschreibung: A system capable of making measurements of fluctuating atmospheric density is described. Spatial scales required in assessing the quality of coherent radiation propagation are discussed. The special sensors, aircraft installation, data reduction procedures, and other special requirements necessary to obtain meaningful atmospheric turbulence data are also described. The spectral distribution of density fluctuation are presented.

Beschreibung: A chronological overview of aero-optics test flights is presented highlighting the objectives and conclusions from the tests. Flight tests performed in coordination with the PRESS reentry observation missions and the ALL Cycle 2 laser propagation and tracking demonstrations are described addressing the identification and quantification of distortion phenomena. Finally, current aero-optics flight investigations of an atmospheric turbulence probe are briefly discussed.
