Notes: The techniques of solid state coextrusion and powder extrusion have been employed for the deformation of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. Chain folded and chain extended morphologies obtained under different crystallization conditions were coextruded within a nylon 11 casing acting as a processing aid at an extrusion draw ratio (EDR) of 5 at ≤ 120°C and 0.20 GPa. The powder was compacted and extruded at ≤ 128°C and 0.23 GPa up to an EDR of 24. The physical and mechanical properties of the extrudates were evaluated and found to be dependent on intial morphology. An extrudate from the chain-folded morphology gave a low modulus of 0.71 GPa, the chain-extended morphology a modulus of 6.7 GPa, and the compacted powder a modulus of 15 GPa.

Notes: High-density polyethylene of high tensile modulus has been produced by solid state extrusion using an Instron capillary rheometer. Microhardness measurements on these ultraoriented fibers have been made to assess their perfection from values of the tensile elastic modulus and shear strength. The microhardness tests were measured using a Vickers square diamond. The microhardness increased with the common temperature for crystallization and extrusion, likely due to improvement in the lateral packing of microfibrils. The variation of microhardness with draw ratio is also illustrated.

Notes: A poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) of M̄w 750,000 and M̄w/M̄n 5.10 in toluene solution was sheared in a Virtis-60 homogenizer. The polymer concentration was 3.0 to 12.0 g/100ml, and test temperature was 10 ± 0.5°C. The extent of degradation was measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). It was concluded that on shearing (i) the molecular weight decreases rapidly at the beginning of shearing and thereafter decreases ever more slowly toward a limiting value, (ii) the molecular weight distribution is narrowed, (iii) no degradation occurs up to 5000 rpm and thereafter increases with stirring speed, (iv) degradation is more at lower concentrations but concentration is not a sensitive variable, and (v) the chain scission occurs randomly. The Mark-Houwing relationship for PVAc in THF at 25°C was derived as [η] = 2.47 × 10-4 × M̄v0.644.

Notes: Characterization and assignment of the products of metastable decompositions which are transmitted by a double focusing mass spectrometer, is often complicated by the inability to measure precisely the parent/daughter ion mass values directly from the spectra which appear on chart paper. This is often because there are considerably fewer peaks in these types of spectra compared with a normal mass spectrum obtained from high energy reactions in the ion source. Electronic circuits are described which permit accurate parent/daughter ion mass values to be obtained when the products of metastable decompositions are transmitted through the ZAB-2F double focusing mass spectrometer. Digital logic circuitry is also described which is used to mark mass values during a scan by driving either a solenoid pen drive unit for a chart recorder or a galvanometer on a multi-range ultraviolet oscillograph recorder.

Notes: The recently developed technique of solid-state coextrusion for ultradrawing semicrystalline thermoplastics has been applied in the preparation of self-reinforced high-density polyethylene extrudates. The extrudates consist of definite core and sheath phases composed of different molecular weights (Mw) in the range of 60,000-250,000 and different molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 3.0-20). Concentric billets of two different phases were prepared for extrusion by in serting a polyethylene rod within a tubular billet of a different high-density polyethylene followed by melting the two phases to obtain bonding between them. The billet was then split longitudinally to increase extrusion speed and extruded at 120°C, 0.23 GPa through a conical die of extrusion draw ratio 25. Extrudates of high tensile modulus (38 GPa) and strength (0.50 GPa) could be produced in a steady state process at a rate near 0.25 cm/min. The tensile properties of the extrudates from either the single or concentric billets increased with average molecular weight and were insensitive to the molecular weight distribution of the constituent phases. Thermal analysis indicated a high deformation efficiency for the sheath and core phases of the extrudates by the coextrusion technique.

Notes: Rheological studies were carried out on concentrated m-cresol solutions of two helical synthetic polypeptides; poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG; molecular weight, 150,000) and poly-∊-carbobenzyloxy-L-lysine (PCBZL; molecular weight, 200,000). Steady shear measurements were made over a range of 0.01-16,000 sec-1 to obtain steady shear viscosity and first normal stress difference. Dynamic viscosity and dynamic storage modulus were measured both by oscillatory shear between cone and plate and also by an eccentric rotating disk device over frequency ranges of 0.1-400 and 0.1-63 rad/sec, respectively. The concentration ranges were such that both liquid crystalline and isotropic solutions were investigated. The previously reported observations of an apparent negative first normal stress difference within a defined range of shear rate for liquid crystalline solutions were confirmed for the PBLG and PCBZL solutions. At high shear rates the peaks in plots of steady shear viscosity against concentration were profoundly suppressed but peaks in first normal stress difference versus concentration were not. The observation of liquid crystalline order in PCBZL/m-cresol solutions at room temperature constitutes evidence that the inverse coil-helix transition temperature is lower in concentrated solutions than in dilute solutions. The critical concentration for formation of the liquid crystalline phase was higher for PCBZL than for PBLG, despite a higher axial ratio, due to helix flexibility.
