Notes: Summary The cholinesterase (ChE)-activity and the content of gangliosides in the egg yolk and in the brain of rainbow trout was investigated at different development stages. 1. The ChE-activity in the egg yolk begins to increase 4 weeks after fertilization, concomitantly with the differentiation of the eyes. 2. The specific ChE-activity in the brain increases most markedly after hatching. 3. The time course of the increase in ganglioside content in the brain is similar to that of the ChE-activity. 4. During the period around hatching the trout brain contains mainly mono- and disialogangliosides. 5. More polar high molecular weight sialogangliosides are not synthesized before the young fish becomes mobile.
