Conclusions Effluent containing clay and chamotte can be treated satisfactorily in a clarifier with a suspended layer of sediment. The content of suspended matter in the clarified effluent does not exceed 13 mg/liter. The flow velocity in the suspended layer and the concentration of the layer do not vary with the original concentration (within the investigated limits) of the solid phase in the effluent but depend on the height of the suspended layer and the physicochemical properties of the suspension. The sediment produced in the clarification of the effluent is readily dehydrated. The stay time of the sediment in the installation upstream from the dehydration equipment should riot exceed 15 min.
