    Description: Fission tracks formed by the vH (very heavy) nuclei group of solar and galactic cosmic rays have been studied in silicate minerals of the lunar regolith returned by the Luna 16 and Luna 20 unmanned spacecraft. It is shown that the material in the Luna 16 core sample, from a typical mare region of the lunar surface, has undergone stronger irradiation by cosmic rays than material returned a highland region by Luna 20. A low-irradiation component (about 10 percent of the total number of crystals) has been found in the Luna 20 core sample materials, which can possibly be attributed to material added to the main bulk of the regolith in the formation of the crater Apollonius C. From the track density distribution of crystals, as a function of depth in the regolith core sample, it follows that the process of formation of the upper layer of the regolith, both for the lunar mare and for the highland region, includes sequential layering of finely crushed crystalline matter and subsequent mixing of it by micrometeorite bombardment. A portion of the crystals with a very high track density may be a component added to the lunar surface from outer space.

    Description: The concentrations of aluminum, manganese, sodium, chromium, iron, cobalt, and 12 rare earth elements were determined by neutron activation analysis using slow neutrons. Oxygen and silicon were determined using a fast neutron generator. Mossbauer spectroscopy was used to investigate iron compounds in Luna 16 regolith samples from the upper part of the core.

    Description: Results of electromagnetic sounding distinguished an outer high resistance shell about 200 km thick in the moon's structure. A preliminary petrological interpretation of the moon's layers indicated their origin as a consequence of differentiation of the initial peridotite material. Upon melting, 20% to 40% of the material melts and is removed to form a high resistance basaltic shell underlain by a layer of spinal peridotites enriched in divalent iron oxides and having a reduced resistance.

    Description: The effects of radiation on the evaporation of spherical clouds in a hot medium are considered. The critical cloud radius at which radiative losses balance conductive heating is determined as a function of the external temperature and density. Smaller clouds evaporate, and larger clouds condense. The conditions under which the surfaces of the clouds may be detected are discussed. Net radiative losses for evaporating clouds are calculated, and an effective cooling function for a cloudy medium is obtained. The results may be applied to clouds in supernova remnants, in the interstellar medium, and in clusters of galaxies.

    Description: Near-ultraviolet radiation from Nova Cygni 1975 was detected by the Copernicus satellite on five occasions from 1975 September 1 to 1975 September 9. The nova was not seen in the UV after this date. The principal result was the observation of a broad emission feature from the Mg II doublet at 2800 A. The absence of strong UV radiation at shorter wavelengths suggests that these lines are produced by collisional excitation in the outer layers of an expanding shell with electron temperature of approximately 4000 K. The absence of observed emission lines from highly ionized species indicates that the amount of material with log T between 4.4 and 5.7 is less than 0.001 times that which produces the Mg II emission. The continuum flux in the near-UV decreased as the nova evolved, showing that the total luminosity decreased as the nova faded in the visible.

    Description: The Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (1944) accretion model is considered which involves accretion onto a massive body moving at a high Mach number with respect to the ambient medium and the production of a high-density accretion column along the axis where particle orbits intersect. The stability of steady-state solutions with respect to short-wavelength perturbations is analyzed using the WKB approximation, and the accretion column is shown to be unstable toward such perturbations. It is noted that this instability is not affected by the position of the stagnation point in the steady-state solution.

    Description: A radio observation of (C-12)(O-17) in the dust cloud Lynds 134 is reported, and the question of the (C-13)(O-16)/(C-12)(O-18) ratio across this cloud is considered. A value of approximately 0.28 is obtained for the (C-12)(O-17) column-density ratio, and it is shown that the (C-13)(O-16)/(C-12)(O-18) ratio is very different at two positions in the cloud separated by about 3.75 arcmin. (C-13)(O-16)/(C-12)(O-18) column-density ratios are calculated on the assumption of LTE and found to have a mean value of 4.8 at six positions in the most obscured part of the cloud; the same ratio is determined to be much larger and variable outside the cloud core. It is suggested that chemical fractionation of CO is occurring in this cloud, that (C-13)(O-16) is considerably enriched in its outer regions, and that the cloud's C-12/C-13 ratio is approximately 104.

    Description: Densities of neutral hydrogen and deuterium are found from observation with the Copernicus satellite of the Ly-alpha line toward two nearby stars. The hydrogen density is 0.03 + or - 0.01 per cu cm toward Alpha Aur (Capella) and 0.20 + or - 0.05 per cu cm in the direction of Alpha Cen A, values indicating that the nearby (less than 14 pc) interstellar medium is inhomogeneous and can be of low density in certain directions. The ratios of deuterium to hydrogen - 3.9 (+5.7, -1.7) by 10 to the -5th power and 0.24 (+0.12, -0.07) by 10 to the -5th power for Alpha Aur and Alpha Cen A, respectively - suggest that variations in the deuterium abundance may exist.
