Notes: Interaction of macromixing and micromixing in microbiological flow reactors based on a kinetic model of the Michaelis-Menten type has been treated by considering two general types of flow systems: the system of n continuous stirred-tank reactors in series (n-CSTR's in series) and the series combination of a plug-flow reactor and a continuous stirred-tank reactor. Systematic schemes to describe the micromixing conditions of a reactor system are presented. Additional micromixing states are considered besides those proposed by Kramers and those proposed by Zwietering if the systems are employed as empirical models of a flow system. When the number of stirred-reactor units in the system of n-CSTR's in series is small, micromixing has a significant effect on the growth processes. As the number of reactor units increases, the micromixing effect on the growth processes decreases. The effect of micromixing is also important for a system described by a series combination of a plug-flow reactor and a continuous stirred reactor. In addition, the exit concentrations from the system having the same residence time distribution and the same degree of segregation may be different from each other. Information obtained in this study is pertinent in the design of biological flow reactors and sewage treatment systems.

Notes: An analysis is made of diffusion and chemical reaction in an isothermal multicomponent fluid. Transient gas-phase reaction in a one-dimensional nonflow system and steady state gas-phase or surface reaction in a tubular reactor are considered. The equations are linearized around some state away from equilibrium. Multicomponent and binary diffusivity expressions are used and a series of reactions of varying complexity is considered. The possibility of oscillations increases as the complexity of the reactions is increased. These oscillations occur with time in the nonflow system and with space-time in the tubular reactor, and it appears that any reacting mixture which oscillates in one of these two systems will also oscillate in the other.

Notes: The transient models for some interphase transport processes have been developed based on the transient age distributions derived from the population balance. These models appear to represent physical reality more accurately than do the steady state models during the start-up period of the transport processes.

Notes: Diffusion and either surface or gas-phase reaction in a ternary ideal gas mixture in steady fully developed laminar flow in a tube is considered. The linearized equations valid near equilibrium and under isothermal conditions are solved. Concentration profiles predicted using a multicomponent diffusivity matrix are compared to those predicted using more approximate diffusivities. Local overshoots past equilibrium occur, but oscillations (with axial position) are not possible. A simplified diffusivity expression is found which predicts cup-mixing mole fractions in good agreement with those predicted using the multicomponent diffusivities.

Notes: The optimal startup policy of a jacketed tubular reactor, in which a first-order, reversible, exothermic reaction takes place, is presented. A distributed maximum principle is presented for determining weak necessary conditions for optimality of a diffusional distributed parameter system. A numerical technique is developed for practical implementation of the distributed maximum principle. This involves the sequential solution of the state and adjoint equations, in conjunction with a functional gradient technique for iteratively improving the control function.

Description / Table of Contents: The propagation rate constants of the anionic polymerization of styrene in dioxane were measured as a function of the “living” end concentration and of the temperature. They were compared with corresponding values in other solvents. It is shown that only contact ion-pairs are involved in this polymerization.

Notes: The mass spectra of the Al(III), Cr(III), Fe(III) and Co(III) complexes of the anions of hexafluoroacetylacetone (hfac) trifluoroacetylacetone (ttac), benzoyltrifluoroacetone (btac) and thenoyltrifluoroacetone (ttac) have been determined and are discussed here. Emphasis is placed on discerning which of the observed reactions may properly be attributed to the influence of the metal in the complex and those which may be thought of as arising from the nature of the ligand. The most important influence of the coordinated metal is related to its ability to be reduced2; however, the presence of the metal serves to prohibit or facilitate certain rearrangement reactions relative to the free protonated ligand. Since essentially all fragmentation occurs within or by loss of a ligand, the nature of the ligand determines the nature of the observed fragments. Where intramolecular com-petition of fragment types is possible (tfac, btac and ttac complexes), the most probable fragment of a given class, odd electron or even electron, is easily determined. The most commonly eliminated fragments are CF3and CF2. Certain metastable peaks are associated with consecutive decomposition in the field free region. Such a phenomenon appears to be common for molecules of the type studied here.
