Notes: Summary The object of the present paper is to investigate the so-called planeLamb's problem in an initially stressed magneto-elastic semi-space bounded by a plane. The results obtained in this investigation are in agreement with the corresponding results of the classical planeLamb's problem when the semi-space is supposed to be initially unstressed and non-magnetic.

Notes: Summary The object of this paper is to investigate the propagation of elastic waves in an infinite elastic space due to an explosion at the centre of a spherical cavity. The explosion takes place accompanied by thermal change due to which it is assumed that the material nearer to the cavity differs from that away from the same. It is also assumed that the explosion causes: i) a periodic force -σ rr =p(t)=p 0 e iwt on the surface of the cavity. ii) an impulsive force -σ rr =p(t)=p 0 H (t) on the surface of the cavity,H(t) being Heaviside unit function.

Notes: Summary The object of the present paper is to investigate the magneto-elastic surface waves in an initially stressed conducting medium. The theory of magneto-elastic surface waves in an initially stressed conducting medium has firstly been deduced and then it has been employed in investigating the particular cases of surface waves such as (i) Rayleigh waves (ii) Love waves and (iii) Stoneley waves. The wave-velocity equations obtained in different cases are in agreement with the corresponding classical results when the solid is initially unstressed and the magnetic field is absent or the material is non-magnetic.

Notes: Summary Some propagation characteristics of low frequency surface waves have been studied at the different soil formations. The field records were obtained by operating a mechanical-optical seismograph in the vicinity of small explosions. The records have been analysed for both amplitude and spectral attenuation studies. The existence of power laws are suggested in general.

Notes: Abstract 1–8 Å, 2–12 Å and 8–20 Å non-flare X-ray flux data and 9.1 cm spectroheliograms for 1237 days during the period July 1966 to June 1970 have been studied to derive physical models of λ 〈 20 Å X-ray emitting regions on the Sun under quiescent (non-flare) conditions. The preferred regions of emission below 20 Å which coincide with the coronal active regions characterised by enhanced 9.1 cm microwave emission are found to have temperature lying between 1.8 and 3 × 106 K, emission measure 1049–1050 and electron density 109-1010 per cc. The average area of an active region is 1020 cm2. A slow gradient of temperature and electron density is seen to exist around a region of peak activity, both temperature and electron density decreasing outwards. Based on the derived physical model of the emitting regions a new method is presented for calculating X-ray flux and spectral energy distribution in this wave length region using daily 9.1 cm solar spectroheliograms. The calculated values are in good agreement with the observed values.

Notes: Summary A system reliability approach to linear programming is developed here for the case when the restrictions are chance-constrained. Methods of characterizing a system reliability measure for a linear programming system, its implications under alternative probability distribution assumptions and its uses for specifying policies with an improved system reliability routine are analytically discussed.

Notes: Summary The implications of the probabilistic interpretation of a linear programming system in terms of the statistical theory of reliability are here analyzed. The concept of reliability, its relation to the presence of excess resources or organizational slack and to the age distribution of specific resources like capital with a specific depletion function is explored from an economic viewpoint. Possible uses of this reliability approach for economic models of resource allocation are also indicated, particularly for the case when the optimal durability of fixed resources is to be determined.
