Notes: Summary The effect of couple-stresses on the propagation of waves in an elastic layer has been investigated in this paper. It is found that the velocity of the propagation of waves in an elastic layer increases due to the presence of couple-stresses.

Notes: Summary Fourier transforms of theoretical magnetic anomalies of two-dimensional bodies (vertical fault and horizontal cylinder of infinite length) are computed. In both cases it is shown that for a particular body the amplitude spectra of horizontal and vertical anomalies are the same and the phase spectra differ by π/2. Different parameters like depth and susceptibility contrast can be calculated from the amplitude spectrum.

Notes: Abstract Political theory distinguishes between two concepts of representative democratic decisions. Under the first concept, representatives do not decide issues as independent individuals but merely reflect the ‘will’ of their constituencies; under the second, the decisions are made by the elected representatives themselves on the basis of their independent judgments on political issues. In the literature of democratic choice, the first concept has been formalized by Murakami, Fishburn, Pattanaik among others, in terms of decision procedures where the representative is identified with the preference-pattern emerging from the aggregation of the preferences of individual voters in a given constituency. Here we formalize the second type of representative democracy and show that it comes into conflict with certain essential features of a democratic group decision rule. In particular decisiveness and monotonicity are violated. The violation of monotonicity is of particular significance because it has come to be regarded as one of the fundamental principles for the ethical acceptability of democratic decision procedures. I am also grateful to the University Grants Commission of India for the financial assistance in carrying out this study.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Four different methods of analyzing the sensitivity of the optimal solution of a crop-mix problem in linear programming, e. g., (a) variability analysis for second-best and third-best solutions, (b) perturbation analysis around a specific optimal basis, (c) the sensitivity coefficient approach, and (d) the method of fractile criterion by which a specified fractile of the distribution of profits is maximized, are investigated here. The objective is to compare the different operational methods of sensitivity analysis applied to an empirical economic problem.

Notes: Abstract The geneG, conditioning seed coat colour was found to be located at 15.37±3.05 map units from the breakage point of one of six newly induced interchanges in linseed. Since no information about the karyotype in linseed is available, the chromosome on whichG is located, cannot be specified.

Notes: Summary A spontaneous mutant for flower colour and shape in the dahlia cultivar White Pearl is described. It is suggested that this new type may be ascribed to a mutation of an inhibitor gene.

Notes: In an earlier paper (Bibliography [1]) it has been shown that approximate representations of excited states of atoms can be obtained from the study of the singularities in the dynamic polarizability. Starting with these wave functions a more accurate calculation of the excited states in the Hartree-Fock scheme can be made by a perturbation treatment. The resulting wave functions yield significantly improved energy values. The 21P, 31P and 41P states of the He sequence up to C4+ are studied. The expectation values of a number of operators are calculated. The results obtained by the present method compare favourably with other elaborate calculations.

Notes: The quadrupolar and octupolar distortion of the ions in the He-sequence caused by an external electro-magnetic field has been studied by a variation-perturbation method in the Hartree-Fock scheme. For certain frequencies singularities appear in the response of the system to the perturbation. Approximate representations for the excited d and f states have been obtained from a study of these resonances. Such a perturbation calculation has the advantage that representations of the different excited states are obtained independently. The orthogonality to all the lower lying levels of the same symmetry is not required. The only source of inaccuracy implicit in the procedure lies in the improper consideration of the inter-electronic interaction. This is corrected for by an independent calculation, which is again formulated in terms of a perturbation treatment. The resulting wave functions for the excited states are accurate in the Hartree-Fock model. Expectation values of several operators have been calculated with these corrected wave functions.
