    Notes: Summary The microspectrophotometric study of the amount of DNA in the course of the interphase of synchronous binucleate cells, experimentally induced in the roots of the onion (Allium cepa), at 30° C, showed that the rate of DNA synthesis does not appear to be constant throughout the interphase, being greater at the beginning and end of the S period and slower during the middle part of the period. We found that the G 1 period occupies from 0% at 10% of the cell cycle, the S period about 81% and G 2 period plus mitosis about 14%. Contrary to our expectations, highly significant differences were found in the DNA content of the two nuclei of more than 1% of the binucleate cells, which suggests that DNA synthesis may be asynchronous in the two nuclei within a common cytoplasm.

    Notes: Abstract In binucleate 2n-2n and 4n-4n, trinucleate 2n-4n-2n and tetra nucleate cells 2n-2n-2n-2n which had been experimentally induced by means of caffeine (0.1% in tap water) in root-tip cells of onion bulbs (Allium cepa) division cycle time increases sligthly (about 15%) when the DNA content increases from 2n to 8n chromosomes per cell. The interphase time is not significantly modified, whereas the mitosis time increases (about 50%) in the tetranucleate cells in relation to the diploid mononucleate cells. The unsynchronized initiation of prophase and the subsequent synchronization of the nuclei in the polynucleate cells suggest an inhibiting mechanism regulating initiation of the mitosis via cytoplasm.

    Notes: Summary Spectral sensitivity of the lateral eyes of the isopodPorcellio scaber (wood louse) and the decapodsCallinectes sapidus (blue crab),Palaemonetes paludosus (Everglades prawn),Orconectes virilis, andO. immunis (crayfish) have been measured between 300 and 660 nm by determining the reciprocal number of photons required to evoke a constant size retinal action potential. Porcellio is maximally sensitive at 515 nm andCallinectes at 505 nm. Both species have a single pigment system, as spectral sensitivity is unchanged by red light adaptation. Palaemonetes appears to have a dichromatic color vision. Sensitivity of the dark-adapted eye is dominated by a receptor maximally sensitive at 550–555 nm, but red or yellow adaptation discloses a uv pigment with λmax at about 380 nm. Present evidence suggests the 555 and 380 nm pigments are located in different receptor cells. Orconectes has peak sensitivity at 565 nm, but under red light adaptation and close to the electroretinographic threshold a second sensitivity maximum appears at 425 nm. As in the prawn, these peaks seem to indicate the presence of a two-receptor color vision system. The corneas ofOrconectes, Callinectes, andHomarus (lobster) are relatively thick, and microspectrophotometric measurements show near ultraviolet absorption as well as the protein peak at 280 nm. By contrast,Palaemonetes andMusca (housefly), species with near ultraviolet receptors, have thinner corneas which are transparent through the near ultraviolet. The crystalline cone ofPalaemonetes likewise shows no near ultraviolet absorption but a strong protein band at 280 nm. The scarcity of ultraviolet receptors in the compound eyes of crustacea, in contrast to their common occurrence in insects, is thought to be related to the relative absence of ultraviolet wavelengths in most aquatic environments.

    Notes: Summary The study of the cell division cycle by means of caffeine labelling inAllium roots, at 15° C, employing intact root and decapitated roots at several levels (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm) has shown that the number of cycles developed by the cells is constant at each meristem level. This number and the durations of the cycles are not affected by the decapitation. It is suggested that the cell cycle is controlled in the meristematic cells by an intracellular programme which would be developed throughout the meristem. However, the larger the region decapitated is, the more decreases the growth rate of the roots. The removal of the root cap (about 0.5 mm) did not modify the rate of root growth, although it blocked the geotropic response. The quiescent center is proposed as a source of auxin controlling cell elongation.
