Notes: The results obtained with tea plants treated with 14C-maleic hydrazide indicate that tea plants can metabolize maleic hydrazide to some extent. According to autoradiographic studies, two radioactive spots were found on X-ray films after exposure and development. Based on two-dimensional paper chromatography, possible ring cleavage, and infrared spectroscopic techniques, the possible metabolic products are lactic acid, succinic acid, maleimide and hydrazine. The biological activity of the metabolic products was tested by utilizing the Avena first internode test. Based on this investigation, it was noted that each radioactive area contained compound(s) that possess(es) some growth promoting properties. However, the results obtained with unknown number one (U1) indicate that it possesses greater growth-promoting properties than unknown two (U2). finally, the approximate concentrations of U1 and U2 were determined by comparison with known concentrations of IAA and in relation to the amount of growth produced during the 19½-hour period of incubation.

Notes: Summary Treatment with a solution of the detergent cetyl pyridinium chloride develops gram positivity in E. coli as is evident from the increased retention of crystal violet by the bacteria. Since cetyl pyridinium chloride has been found to remove larger quantity of lipid from E. coli than from the normal gram positive bacteria S. aureus, it is reasonable to think that lipid content in a bacteria may have an important role in determining the gram character of it. Gram negative bacteria generally contain more lipid than the gram positive ones.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Ethylenedibiguanide complexes of silver(III), having perchlorate, nitrate and sulfate groups as respective anions, are capable of initiating aqueous vinyl polymerization in dark at elevated temperatures (35 °C or higher). Oxygen acts as an inhibitor. Initiator exponent value and overall energy of activation are 0.86 and 22 ±1.5 Kcals/mole respectively in case of perchlorate complex initiation. Hydroxyl endgroups have been found to be incorporated in polymers by the application of dye-technique developed byPalit. Near ultraviolet photoexcitation at low temperature is quite ineffective in bringing out such aqueous initiation. Thiourea has been found to be an efficient reductant, capable of forming redox initiation pairs with these complexes and presence of amino bearing endgroups has been detected in resulting polymer by the application of dye-technique. Based on these findings suitable mechanisms of initiation and termination have been proposed.

Notes: Summary Aluminium in steel has been gravimetrically determined as phosphate after precipitation at a controlled pH of 3.7–3.9. Iron has been complexed with thioglycollic acid and ammonium thiocyanate. Titanium and zirconium, if present, are removed from the acidic solution with sodium hypophosphite and bromine water. Copper group elements, if present, are removed by passing hydrogen sulphide through the solution. Chromium, vanadium, manganese, nickel and cobalt do not interfere.

Notes: A few redox systems containing thiourea as reductant have been found to be quite effective in initiating vinyl polymerization in aqueous media and polymers obtained in the process have all been found to contain amino endgroups to various extents by the application of dye techniques. Quite a few oxidants have so far been utilized for this purpose; among them are ferric chloride (Fe3+), ethylene dibiguanide complex salts of tripositive silver (Ag3+), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), persulfate (S2O82-), bromate (BrO3-) + hydrochloric acid (HCl). In case of oxidants Fe3+ and Ag3+, amino endgroups are mainly incorporated in polymers; but in case of oxidants H2O2 and S2O82-, fragments of oxidants are also incorporated as hydroxyl and sulfate endgroups. BrO3-, however, forms a very efficient redox-initiating system with thiourea, as is evidenced by its capability of polymerizing even hydroquinone-stabilized water-soluble vinyl monomers at very low temperature (∼0°C.) and at a quite rapid rate. Besides amino endgroups, sulfonate endgroups have also been detected in polymers in this case, and the relative extents of these two types of endgroups depend generally on the acid concentration of the system. Evidences so far collected indicate the generation of S—C(=NH)NH2 radicals in the system by oxidation of isothiourea, HS—C(=NH)NH2, and these are incorporated in polymers as endgroups. Sulfonate endgroups may be generated by oxidation of these amino-bearing endgroups. Suitable initiation mechanisms have been suggested in each case.
