Nitrosyltricyanomethanides of cobalt and nickel, [Co(NO)2C(CN)3]n and [Ni(NO)(CN)3]n can be prepared by the action of potassium tricyanomethanide on the corresponding metal nitrosylhalides. These methanide complexes react with tertiary phosphines yielding compounds of the type Co(NO)2LNC—C(CN)2, Ni(NO)L2NC—C(CN)2 and[Ni(NO)LC(CN)3]n (L = P(C6H5)3, P(C6H11)3, 1/2(C6H5)2PCH2CH2P(C6H5)2), analogous to halide and pseudohalide complexes. While metal-NC—C(CN)2 bonds must be assumed to exist in the monomeric compounds, tricyanomethanide bridge structures are suggested for the polymeric species.

Tricyanomethanid schließt sich in seinem komplexchemischen Verhalten weitgehend dem der Halogenide und Pseudohalogenide (NCS, SR) an. Nitrosyltricyanomethanide von Kobalt und Nickel, [Co(NO)2C(CN)3]n und [Ni(NO)C(CN)3]n, werden durch Umsetzung der entsprechenden Nitrosylhalogenide mit Kaliumtricyanomethanid erhalten. [Co(NO)2C(CN)3]n und [Ni(NO)C(CN)3]n reagieren mit tertiären Phosphinen unter Bildung von Komplexverbindungen des Typs Co(NO)2LNC—C(CN)2, Ni(NO)L2NC—C(CN)2 und [Ni(NO)LC(CN)3]n (L = P(C6H5)3, P(C6H11)3, 1/2(C6H5)2PCH2CH2P(C6H5)2). Während in den monomeren Verbindungen Metall-NC—C(CN)2-Bindungen anzunehmen sind, werden für die mehrkernigen Komplexe Strukturen mit Tricyanomethanid-Brücken vorgeschlagen.
