Notes: The polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by diethyl sodiomalonate in dimethylformamide has been investigated. The degree of polymerization was found to be independent of the monomer conversion but was dependent on the extent of polymerization. The polymers produced were examined for functional groups by infrared spectroscopy. An anionic mechanism involving hydride ion transfer to monomer has been suggested. The kinetics of the reaction can be followed because of the slow initiation step and are found to be governed by the rate expression -d[M]/dt = k[M]2[C]. The decrease in DP with increasing conversion is due to degradation of the polyacrylonitrile by basic ions. The ratios of the rate constants for both the monomer and polymer transfer reactions to the rate constant for propagation have been determined. The coloration of the polymers appears independent of the degradation reaction.

Description / Table of Contents: Deterioration of timber in cooling towers. Possible causesTimber in cooling towers is always exposed to exacting working conditions and shows many signs of deterioration. In order to clarify two specific cases of deterioration, the timber of cooling towers (redwood and fir) has been subjected to mechanical tests for loss of mechanical strength whilst the cooling water and circulating water have been analyzed. It was found that alkaline water with iron content causes a marked loss of mechanical strength and that the impregnation of the wood with tar oils has a very great protective effect as it inhibits the corrosion caused by iron nails.

Notes: Interlaboratory comparisons on several materials are being conducted among a half-dozen laboratories having high speed tensile testers of widely different mechanical design and instrumentation. This progress report gives results from the first two round robins, the first on two plastic films and the second on copper wire. These materials were tested a t several speeds in the range of 1.3 to 130 m./min. (50 to 5000 in./min.). Preliminary conclusions and plans for future work are offered.

Notes: The significance of the time to acquire constant velocity in high speed testing is discussed. It is pointed out that the border line between impact and nonimpact testing depends on this time as well as the length of the test specimen and the velocity of sound in the material being tested. Equations relating force, mass, velocity, damping, and time are worked out for a pneumatically driven, hydraulically damped piston-type machine. These equations afford a basis for the design of a high speed tester. Practical values of parameters are given for a machine which will acquire a uniform velocity of 50 ft./sec. in about 3 × 10-4 sec. Design data for a damping system are also given.

Notes: An investigation of the relationship between molecular structure and polymer performance has been made for a series of six diglycidyl ethers. The resins evaluated were those based on the bisphenols derived from methyl ethyl, methyl isobutyl, methyl n-amyl, methyl n-nonyl, methyl-n-heptadecyl and di-n-heptadecyl ketones. The first three members of this series gave performances close to those of the diglycidyl ether of p,p′-bisphenol acetone. The long chain members of the series showed poorer over-all performance but did exhibit significant hydrophobic character in the cured specimens. The cured diglycidyl ethers showed variation attributed to both length and configuration of the alkyl chain. An increase in length of straight chain resulted in lowered heat distortion temperature, hardness, shear strength, and organic solvent resistance. Branching in the alkyl chain imparts improved performance characteristics.

Notes: Loading a lap joint in tension causes the adherends to increase their tensile stress over the nominal because of the bending produced by the offset of the joint. Knowing the configuration of the joint and the tensile stress, the stress distribution in the adherends outside the joint can be determined. The theory, with resulting equations, is based on the assumption that the adherends act like a plate bent to a cylindrical surface. If the bending of the adherends is eliminated by the use of a double overlap joint, the stress distribution in the adhesive can be determined. This analysis is based on existing mathematical findings of the load distribution in riveted joints. The resulting equations have been proven experimentally by the use of the photo stress technique, and can be applied to adhesively bonded, soldered, brazed, welded, and under certain conditions, riveted joints.
