Reversible transport reactions, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Me + 2}\,{\rm HCl\,{\!=\!=}\,MeCl}_{{\rm 2(g)}} + {\rm H}_{\rm 2}. $$\end{document} have been established in a sealed quartz tube by heating metallic iron or nickel and the corresponding dichlorides to temperatures of about 900 and 600°C, respectively, in the presence of traces of HCl, H2 or H2O. The metals migrating to the colder part of the tube were deposited as mirrors or crystals. In the absence of any hydrogen compound, no metal transport according to \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Me + MeCl}_{{\rm 2(g)}}\,{\!=\!=}\,{\rm MeCl}_{{\rm (g)}} $$\end{document} occurs. From this observations limits for the enthalpies of formation of the monochlorides, known from spectrum analysis have been estimated. The hydrogen content of metallic nickel has been removed by subliming NiCl2 ove the metal at 1000°C.
Notes:
