    Description: The symmetry of conjugate rifted margins is a first-order observable feature reflecting the geodynamic processes acting during and after continental rifting. The symmetry of the South China Sea (SCS) rifted margins can be deduced from comprehensive geophysical datasets on a continental-margin scale. Here, we combine three key approaches: (1) lateral fault distributions are delineated according to free-air gravity anomalies, (2) crustal stretching styles are mapped based on gravity inversion constrained by deep seismic profiles, and (3) total extension of conjugate margins is estimated according to margin restorations and tectonic settings. We infer a predominantly symmetric rifting style caused by pure shear extension, with only narrow domains of asymmetric deformation in continent-ocean transition (COT) regions that have undergone simple shear and where the lower crust of the highly thinned distal margin is embrittled before continental breakup. However, our analysis also suggests that this symmetry has been modified by post-rift geodynamic processes. Southward lower crustal flow, which occurred only on the southern margin due to the low viscosity of the lower crust and the slab pull induced by the subducting Proto-SCS plate during seafloor spreading, shifted the crustal stretching styles from symmetric to asymmetric. The collision between the southern margin and Borneo thickened the lower crust more than the upper crust at the southern end of the southern margin and shortened the southern margin. This event had a large impact on the SE margin but a small impact on the SW margin. We conclude that (1) for the SE and NE margins, the crustal stretching styles shifted from asymmetric to approximately symmetric, and the total extension shifted from symmetric to asymmetric; (2) for the SW and NW margins, the crustal stretching and total extension remained asymmetric and symmetric, respectively.

    Description: The up-dip extent of slip during large megathrust earthquakes is important for both tsunami excitation and subsequent tsunami earthquake potential, but it is unclear whether frictional properties and/or fault structure determine the up-dip limit. A finite-fault slip model for the 2021 MW 8.2 Chignik, Alaska Peninsula earthquake obtained by joint inversion and modeling of geodetic, seismic, and tsunami observations provides unusually good constraints on the up-dip edge of the slip. Rupture initiated ~35 km deep and propagated unilaterally northeastward with large-slip (up to 8.4 m) distributed over a depth range of 26 to 42 km beneath the continental shelf. Aftershocks concentrate up-dip of the coseismic slip around a strong megathrust reflector with high Coulomb stress change. The ~25 km deep up-dip edge of slip strongly correlates with a change in plate interface reflectivity apparent in reflection profiles, indicating that a structural and frictional transition provided a barrier to shallower rupture.

    Description: As one of the most populous regions, Central Java in Indonesia is prone to high seismic and volcanic hazards, primarily due to the progressive northward subduction of the Australian plate beneath the Sunda plate. Detailed velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath Central Java is critical for an improved understanding of the subduction processes and the associated seismicity and volcanism. Despite several independent isotropic velocity models proposed for the region, crustal-scale anisotropic structure, which reflects past and ongoing deformation, has rarely been investigated. Our goal is to image the crustal-scale P-wave azimuthally anisotropic structure beneath Central Java. Seismic data used were recorded by 〉 200 seismic stations from multiple projects. To make full use of the open access data, machine learning phase picking and subsequent event association and location were applied to build a local earthquake catalog. The machine-learning-based workflow detects 〉 1000 events, roughly triple the amount from previous manual picking. Notably, the preliminary catalog includes a large number of earthquakes that were located in the offshore areas but were recorded by land stations to the north, resulting in huge back azimuthal gaps and potential bias in earthquake relocation. The ongoing study attempts to involve depth phases, such as sPn and sPg, for more accurate earthquake locations and thus more reliable tomographic images. With the expanded and refined seismicity catalog, a ray-free adjoint-state traveltime tomography package called TomoATT will be used for the 3-D velocity heterogeneity and azimuthal anisotropy beneath Central Java.

    Description: Extensive efforts have been dedicated to deciphering the interactions associated with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, these developments are hampered by a lack of efficient strategies to avoid beneficial synergies being offset by harmful trade-offs. To fill these gaps, we used causal diagnosis and network analysis methods to construct 1302 directed networks of SDGs for 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2020. We observed a dramatic offsetting effect of SDG synergies and trade-offs in China from 2000 to 2020, with approximately 27% of trade-off indicator pairs turning into synergies and about 25% of the synergy indicator pairs turning into trade-offs. However, our findings suggested that prioritising the progress of high-frequency indicators in virtuous cycles could multiply the positive systemic effects of the SDGs. Moreover, controlling the transition from passive to active in the trade-off network of SDGs remains a challenge in advancing the SDGs holistically.

    Description: Climate change–induced precipitation anomalies during extremely wet years (EWYs) result in substantial nitrogen losses to aquatic ecosystems (Nw). Still, the extent and drivers of these losses, and effective mitigation strategies have remained unclear. By integrating global datasets with well-established crop modeling and machine learning techniques, we reveal notable increases in Nw, ranging from 22 to 56%, during historical EWYs. These pulses are projected to amplify under the SSP126 (SSP370) scenario to 29 to 80% (61 to 120%) due to the projected increases in EWYs and higher nitrogen input. We identify the relative precipitation difference between two consecutive years (diffPr) as the primary driver of extreme Nw. This finding forms the basis of the CLimate Extreme Adaptive Nitrogen Strategy (CLEANS), which scales down nitrogen input adaptively to diffPr, leading to a substantial reduction in extreme Nw with nearly zero yield penalty. Our results have important implications for global environmental sustainability and while safeguarding food security.
