    Beschreibung: The European CORDEX (EURO-CORDEX) initiative is a large voluntary effort that seeks to advance regional climate and Earth system science in Europe. As part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) - Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), it shares the broader goals of providing a model evaluation and climate projection framework and improving communication with both the General Circulation Model (GCM) and climate data user communities. EURO-CORDEX oversees the design and coordination of ongoing ensembles of regional climate projections of unprecedented size and resolution (0.11° EUR-11 and 0.44° EUR-44 domains). Additionally, the inclusion of empirical-statistical downscaling allows investigation of much larger multi-model ensembles. These complementary approaches provide a foundation for scientific studies within the climate research community and others. The value of the EURO-CORDEX ensemble is shown via numerous peer-reviewed studies and its use in the development of climate services. Evaluations of the EUR-44 and EUR-11 ensembles also show the benefits of higher resolution. However, significant challenges remain. To further advance scientific understanding, two flagship pilot studies (FPS) were initiated. The first investigates local-regional phenomena at convection-permitting scales over central Europe and the Mediterranean in collaboration with the Med-CORDEX community. The second investigates the impacts of land cover changes on European climate across spatial and temporal scales. Over the coming years, the EURO-CORDEX community looks forward to closer collaboration with other communities, new advances, supporting international initiatives such as the IPCC reports, and continuing to provide the basis for research on regional climate impacts and adaptation in Europe.

    Beschreibung: The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement have ushered in a new era of policymaking to deliver on the formulated goals. Energy policies are key to ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy (SDG7). Yet they can also have considerable impact on other goals. To successfully achieve multiple goals concurrently, policies need to balance different objectives and manage their interactions. Refining previously contemplated design principles, we identify three key principles - complementary, transparency and adaptability - as highly pertinent for multiple-objective energy policies based on a synthesis of seventeen coordinated policy case studies. First, policies should entail complementary measures and design provisions that specifically target non-energy objectives (complementarity). Second, policy impacts should be tracked comprehensively in both energy and non-energy domains to uncover diminishing returns and facilitate policy learning (transparency). Third, policies should be capable of adapting to changing objectives over time (adaptability). These principles are rarely considered in current policies, implying the need to mainstream them into the next generation of policymaking by pointing to best practices and new tools.

    In:  Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change. Contribution of Working Group III to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

    Beschreibung: The use of scenarios and modelling methods are pillars in IPCC Working Group III (WGIII) Assessment Reports. Past WGIII assessment report cycles identified knowledge gaps about the integration of modelling across scales and disciplines, mainly between global integrated assessment modelling methods and bottom-up modelling insights of mitigation responses. The need to improve the transparency of model assumptions and enhance the communication of scenario results was also recognised. This annex on Scenarios and Modelling Methods aims to address some of these gaps by detailing the modelling frameworks applied in the WGIII Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) chapters and disclose scenario assumptions and its key parameters. It has been explicitly included in the Scoping Meeting Report of the WGIII contribution to the AR6 and approved by the IPCC Panel at the 46th Session of the Panel. The annex includes two parts: Part I on Modelling Methods summarises methods and tools available to evaluate sectoral, technological and behavioural mitigation responses as well as integrated assessment models (IAMs) for the analysis of ‘whole system’ transformation pathways; Part II on Scenarios sets out the portfolio of climate change scenarios and mitigation pathways assessed in the AR6 WGIII chapters, its underlying principles and interactions with scenario assessments by WGI and WGII.

    Beschreibung: This dictionary was compiled by hydrogeologists from Germany, Mexico and Nicaragua. German and Spanish expressions were established by native speakers, all of them with a good knowledge of English and some French. However no native English or French speaker has reviewed the dictionary so far. Using the dictionary you will additionally recognize that some translations are still missing in one or more languages while they are already available in others. Further some special expressions you are looking for might be neglected at all. The dictionary is published by now in order to make it available to as many scientists in the field of applied geology as possible, however it is still under construction and probably will ever be. We do think about adding definitions for at least part of the words and a more convenient way to query. If you find any mistakes, missing words or if you have any additional suggestions or want to participate in our multilingual dictionary project (e.g. with a further language) please feel free to contact Prof. Dr. Broder Merkel (merkel@geo.tufreiberg. de). At the end of this four lingual introduction you will find the dictionary applied geology in four versions, all of them contain all four languages, sorted by the language listed in the file name (“English dictionary”: expressions sorted by the first column English; “Deutsches Wörterbuch”: expressions sorted by the first column German, etc.). You may download each dictionary and use the search function of the Acrobat Reader to look for the desired expression. Articles are indicated behind each word with (f) for feminine, (m) for masculine, (n) for neutral. For some words several translations exist in one language or the other. They are listed in different lines below each other. All copyrights belong to the authors. Neither the whole dictionary nor parts of it are to be published by any other user.     Beschreibung: Enhancing the resilience of complex social‐ecological systems (SES) to climate change requires transformative changes. Yet, there are knowledge gaps on how best to achieve transformation. In this study, we present an approach for assessing governance performance in SES and identifying leverage points to ultimately enhance climate resilience. The approach combines three different methods including a capital approach framework, fuzzy cognitive mapping, and a leverage points analysis. Using a coastal case‐study in Algoa Bay, South Africa, the performance of governance processes contributing to different forms of capital is assessed. Subsequently, leverage points ‐ where a small shift may lead to transformative changes in the system as a whole ‐ are identified based on measures of centrality and performance. Results suggest that a range of leverage points can improve governance performance and therefore climate resilience in the case‐study. Leverage points include improving (a) support from the provincial government; (b) priority given to climate change in the integrated development plan; (c) frequency of collaborations; (d) participation in the implementation of climate action plans; (e) allocation of funding to climate change actions; (f) the overall level of preparedness in terms of staff with relevant expertise; (g) public awareness and understanding of climate change. The approach can also be used to analyze and model the relations and interactions between capitals. The study advances methodological and theoretical knowledge on the identification of leverage points for enabling transformations toward climate resilience and broader sustainability goals in SES.
    Beschreibung: Plain Language Summary: Climate change has severe impacts on both people and nature. Enhancing the ability to persist and adapt to climate change requires transformative governance of social‐ecological systems. However, more knowledge is required on how to enable such transformations. In this paper, we present an approach to measure the performance of different governance processes, such as decisions and actions for climate change adaptation made by public and governmental organizations. The approach aims to identify key processes, where a small intervention may improve overall performance for climate change adaptation, and therefore transformation. We apply the approach in a real‐world example in Algoa Bay, South Africa. Results suggest that different processes in the case‐study can be changed in order to enhance the ability to persist and adapt to climate change. This includes seven actions: (a) more support from governmental organizations; (b) greater priority given to climate change in relevant policies; (c) increasing the frequency of interactions between organizations; (d) enhancing the participation in the implementation of climate action plans; (e) better allocation of funding to climate change actions; (f) training staff within organizations to enhance their climate expertise; (g) improving public awareness and understanding of climate change.

    Beschreibung: The Ossa-Morena Zone (OMZ) has a complex geological history including both Cadomian and Variscan orogenic events. Therefore, the OMZ plays an important role in understanding the geodynamic evolution of Iberia. However, the P–T–t evolution of the OMZ is poorly documented. Here, we combine structural and metamorphic analyses with new geochronological data and geochemical analyses of mafic bodies in Ediacaran metasediments (in Iberia known as Série Negra) to constrain the geodynamic evolution of the OMZ. In the studied mafic rocks, two metamorphic stages were obtained by phase equilibria modelling: (1) a high-pressure/low-temperature event of 1.0 ± 0.1 GPa and 470–510 °C, and (2) a medium-pressure/higher-temperature event of 0.6 ± 0.2 GPa and 550–600 °C. The increase in metamorphic temperature is attributed to the intrusion of the Beja Igneous Complex (around 350 Ma) and/or the Évora Massif (around 318 Ma). New U–Pb dating on zircons from the mafic rocks with tholeiitic affinity yields an age between 815 and 790 Ma. If the zircons crystallised from the tholeiitic magma, their age would set a minimum age for the pre-Cadomian basement. The ca. 800 Ma protolith age of HP-LT tholeiitic dykes with a different metamorphic history than the host Série Negra lead us to conclude that: (1) the HP-LT mafic rocks and HP-LT marbles with dykes were included in the Ediacaran metasediments as olistoliths; (2) the blueschist metamorphism is older than 550 Ma (between ca. 790 Ma and ca. 550 Ma, e.g., Cadomian).

    Beschreibung: The production of building stones shown an exponential growth in last decades as consequences of the demand and developments in the extraction and processing techniques. From the several conditioning factors affecting this industry, the geological constrains at quarry scale stands out as one of most important. Globalization and increasing competition in the building stone market require large raw material blocks to keep further processing as cost-effective as possible. Therefore, the potential extraction volume of in-situ stone blocks plays an important role in the yield of a dimensional stone quarry. The full characterization of the fracturing in the quarries comes up as fundamental in the assessment of the in-situ blocks volume/shape and potential extracted raw blocks. Identify the joint sets present, their spacing and the differences across the quarry demands a continuous assess during the quarry live span. Information from unmanned aerial vehicles helps in the field survey, namely trough digital surface models, orthophotos, and three-dimensional models. Also, the fracturing modelling by specific software programs is crucial to improve the block size assessment and the increase the quarry yield. In this research fracturing of twenty-one quarries of granite, limestone, marble, and slate from Portugal were assessed by combining field surveys with new techniques. From the studied quarries several cases were selected and presented to highlight the importance of this combined methodology in the fracturing assessment and how they can be helpful in the maximization of the resources and quarry management.

    Beschreibung: Variations of the acidic polar composition of the Early Permian Irati black shales and Serra Alta shales were assessed by ESI(-) FT-ICR-MS to investigate their significance for the paleoenvironmental studies by comparison with known features in the northeastern and central-eastern Paraná Basin (Brazil). The high O〉2 classes in the Serra Alta shales points to high input of terrigenous OM deposited in oxic waters. In addition, seven parameters based on O1 and O2 compounds are proposed as new paleoenvironmental proxies: phenol index (%DBE 4; O1 class); C27/C28 DBE 4 (O1 class); C27/C28 DBE 5 (O1 class); Even/OddFA; TARFA Odd (terrigenous/aquatic ratio); C36 hopanoic acid index; and hopanoic/steranoic acids ratio. Higher values of the phenol index and the TARFA indicate higher land plant input during the final black shale deposition, and higher Even/OddFA to northeastern basin samples reflects their higher content of terrigenous OM. Furthermore, variations of C27/C28 (DBE 4) and C27/C28 (DBE 5) is useful to reconstruct paleosalinity, in which higher values indicate higher salinity. The C36 hopanoic acid index is higher for the marine hypersaline basal samples from the northeastern basin, while a significant bacterial biomass signal is stored as a higher hopanoic/steranoic acids ratio for central-eastern basin samples.

    Beschreibung: A salinity stratified water body with anoxic bottom conditions under influence of freshwater influxes may have prevailed during deposition of black shales from the Irati Formation, Paraná Basin (Brazil). In this context, we present herein the use of chromans distribution to assess water salinity and freshwater incursions in to the Irati Sea, correlating it with others palaeosalinity proxies, such as Pr/Ph ratio, gammacerane and β-carotane indexes. Besides, it was detected tetrahydrophenanthrene at high concentrations, in addition to gammacerane, which corroborates to the presence of water salinity stratification
