Abstract: This book contains the expert knowledge base of the field’s most experienced practitioners in the field of extradural bone and soft tissue malignancy. Chapters include modern classification, advanced anatomy, imaging, and the concepts around a multidisciplinary approach. Since treating primary tumors requires very different strategies than those used in metastatic tumors, the book devotes separate sections to each sub-discipline. For primary tumors, the text covers both benign and malignant entities and addresses unique anatomic zones such as the sacrum and skull base which require special technical expertise. For metastatic disease, the authors address the ever-important concept of prognosis, and discuss how to answer the eternal question: “How much should we do, and for whom?”. Chapters also explore the state of the art of treatment for the “big 5” histologies (renal cell, lung, breast, prostate, thyroid), with a special chapter emphasis on separation surgery and the now-standard combinatorial care between radiation and surgery. In addition, an entire section is dedicated to evolving surgical technology, which covers the use of minimally invasive techniques, navigation, robotics, 3D-printing, and other evolving technologies for spine tumor care. Infrequently-considered topics, such as how to evaluate a lesion which may be a tumor-mimic, and how to think about economic value in spine tumor surgery, are also presented. Surgical Spinal Oncology serves to help surgeons approach difficult clinical scenarios with a thoughtful, collaborative approach that leverages the best technology and thinking the field of spine oncology has to offer.

Description: Fission product yield data play an important role in simulations of nuclear fission reactors, aimed at fuel cycle and safety analyses. The respective evaluated data libraries still have shortcomings regarding the treatment of energy dependencies and uncertainty information. This work has been aimed at the development of a fission model for future fission product yield evaluations as well as its validation on the levels of cross-sections, fission product yields and time dependent decay radiation.

Description: What are the origins of direct democracy in Switzerland? How does the Swiss judiciary function? What are the principles of Swiss civil, contract and administrative law? What is the role of public service broadcasting in the political decision-making process? What are the leading cases in tax law? What forms of euthanasia are legal in Switzerland? In this introduction 19 legal scholars of the University of Zurich Law Faculty try to answer these questions and give the reader an overview of Swiss public, private, and criminal law. As the first comprehensive introduction to Swiss law in English, it is addressed to both lawyers from abroad and incoming students to the University of Zurich.

Description: Particulate matter (PM) deposited on Platanus acerifolia tree leaves has been sampled in the urban areas of 28 European cities, over 20 countries, with the aim of testing leaf deposited particles as indicator of atmospheric PM concentration and composition. Leaves have been collected close to streets characterised by heavy traffic and within urban parks. Leaf surface density, dimensions, and elemental composition of leaf deposited particles have been compared with leaf magnetic content, and discussed in connection with air quality data. The PM quantity and size were mainly dependent on the regional background concentration of particles, while the percentage of iron-based particles emerged as a clear marker of traffic-related pollution in most of the sites. This indicates that Platanus acerifolia is highly suitable to be used in atmospheric PM monitoring studies and that morphological and elemental characteristics of leaf deposited particles, joined with the leaf magnetic content, may successfully allow urban PM source apportionment.

Description: Sea ice is a very important component of the climate system. While the Arctic sea ice extent has retreated during the past 20 years, it has remained constant in the Antarctic. In order to better understand the role of sea ice in the climate system in the context of global warming currently used coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models have to be improved. This requires to know the sea ice concentration C for a long period for both hemispheres and at the best possible spatial resolution. Currently used methods to obtain C like the NASA Team (NT) algorithm are based on data acquired by the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) at 19 and 37GHz. The SEA LION (SL) algorithm presented here allows to infer C from the polarization P at 85GHz taking advantage of the higher spatial resolution at this frequency. However, the decrease of P caused by the weather influence leads to an overestimation of C. Therefore, P is corrected using a radiative transfer model and atmospheric data taken from Numerical Weather Prediction models and/or derived from SSM/I measurements. The various sea ice and snow properties are considered calculating monthly sea ice tie points. The average standard deviation of C derived with the SL algorithm is 12% for C 〈 50% and below 5% for C 〉 90%. The SL ice edge agrees within 10km with the one evident in VIS/IR images. The SL ice concentration gradient across the marginal ice zone (MIZ) agrees much better with the one evident in SAR images compared to results of the NT algorithm. Using the higher spatial resolution at 85GHz the SL algorithm allows to detect smaller open water areas than known algorithms. A major limitation of the SL algorithm arises from the quality of atmospheric data needed for the weather correction. A spatial resolution of these data lower than the 85GHz SSM/I channels and/or a time lag larger than half an hour between both data sets can cause relative errors above 100%, particulary in the cloud-covered parts of the MIZ.

Description: Research on sustainability transitions has expanded rapidly in the last ten years, diversified in terms of topics and geographical applications, and deepened with respect to theories and methods. This article provides an extensive review and an updated research agenda for the field, classified into nine main themes: understanding transitions; power, agency and politics; governing transitions; civil society, culture and social movements; businesses and industries; transitions in practice and everyday life; geography of transitions; ethical aspects; and methodologies. The review shows that the scope of sustainability transitions research has broadened and connections to established disciplines have grown stronger. At the same time, we see that the grand challenges related to sustainability remain unsolved, calling for continued efforts and an acceleration of ongoing transitions. Transition studies can play a key role in this regard by creating new perspectives, approaches and understanding and helping to move society in the direction of sustainability.

Description: The geodetic datum describes the absolute location, orientation and scale of the observed system with respect to a target frame. Since Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations only provide information on the relative relationships between the participating radio telescopes, the introduction of datum conditions is necessary to ensure that the normal equation system is invertible and thus solvable. For some time, "Helmert rendering" or the "no-net-translation (NNT) and no-net-rotation (NNR)" approach are applied to datum-free VLBI normal matrices to regularize the normal matrix system. When using "Helmert rendering", the transformation parameters are added to the system and are forced to be zero. In this case, the condition matrix is used to expand the normal equation system. The results are retrieved in such a way that the sum of translation and rotations with respect to the reference frame are zero. A similar condition matrix is formed with the NNT/NNR approach, which is then weighted and added to the singular normal matrix. In both cases, the datum-free normal matrix is regularized with a datum matrix which needs to belong to the same family as that of a spectral decomposition into an Eigenvector system. A permitted alternative is the scaling of the datum matrix so that the length of each column is one. In this poster, we explain the background and discuss the implications of proper scaling and approximations.
