    Abstract: This book presents the latest research findings on the laterality of fish and other animals. It describes all aspects of lateral asymmetry, including ecology, morphology, behaviour, dynamics of lefty and righty morphs, genetics and evolution, through field observations, experiments and modeling. Lateral asymmetry in scale-eating cichlids gives a simple and beautiful example of negative frequency-dependent selection and resulting oscillation of lefty and righty morph frequencies. Lateral dimorphism is found not only in scale-eaters but in all orders of fish, shrimps and cuttlefish. Lateral asymmetry interacts between species through "cross-predation." Contrary to fish, lateral asymmetry in snails acts as, in most cases, positive frequency-dependent selection and provides deep insights into speciation. Especially, snakes eating righty snails facilitate speciation of lefty snails. As a collaboration work of field ecologists and theoretical biologists, this book covers a variety of topics on lateral asymmetry, which are consistently related to predation.     Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the human central nervous system (CNS) in the context of its many developmental disorders due to genetic, environmental and hypoxic/ischaemic causes. The book contains three general, introductory chapters in which an overview of the development of the human brain and spinal cord, a summary of mechanisms of development as obtained in experimental studies in various invertebrates and vertebrates, and an overview of the causes of congenital malformations are presented. The developmental disorders of the human brain and spinal cord are presented in a regional, more or less segmental way, starting with neurulation and neural tube defects, and ending with developmental disorders of the cerebral cortex. These chapters are abundantly illustrated in colour with carefully chosen clinical case studies with imaging data, and when available, postmortem verification of the developmental disorders involved. In the third edition, more emphasis has been given to the developmental ontology based on the prosomeric approach, and fetal development.     Abstract: This book analyzes the interplay between development and the environment, focusing on how to forge social consensus and practices in the international community. Two genera, 37 species and 3 subspecies are new formal descriptions, 24 species are described in open nomenclature. Each taxon is presented with a complete and up-to-date synonymy, original description and original remarks (translated into English where necessary), subsequent emendations, remarks by the authors of this catalogue, and etymology. Descriptions of species/subspecies further contain the original measurements, type locality, and data on geographic distribution. Plates illustrate the holotype and one or several specimens from our material, from different paleogeographic realms where possible.     Description: Following the end of the Van Allen Probes mission, the Arase satellite offers a unique opportunity to continue in-situ radiation belt and ring current particle measurements into the next solar cycle. In this study we compare spin-averaged flux measurements from the MEPe, HEP-L, HEP-H, and XEP-SSD instruments on Arase with those from the MagEIS and REPT instruments on the Van Allen Probes, calculating Pearson correlation coefficient and the mean ratio of fluxes at L* conjunctions between the spacecraft. Arase and Van Allen Probes measurements show a close agreement over a wide range of energies, observing a similar general evolution of electron flux, as well as average, peak, and minimum values. Measurements from the two missions agree especially well in the 3.6 ≤ L* ≤ 4.4 range where Arase samples similar magnetic latitudes to Van Allen Probes. Arase tends to record higher flux for energies 〈 670 keV with longer decay times after flux enhancements, particularly for L* 〈 3.6 . Conversely, for energies 〉 1.4 MeV, Arase flux measurements are generally lower than those of Van Allen Probes, especially for L* 〉 4.4 . The correlation coefficient values show that the 〉 1.4 MeV flux from both missions are well correlated, indicating a similar general evolution, although flux magnitudes differ. We perform a preliminary intercalibration between the two missions using the mean ratio of the fluxes as an energy- and L*- dependent intercalibration factor. The intercalibration factor improves agreement between the fluxes in the 0.58-1 MeV range.

    Description: The conjugate measurements of a detached SAR arc on 28 March 2017 are analyzed using observations from the Arase satellite. Swarm and GNSS‐TEC data show that the electron density decreased and the electron temperature increased in the ionosphere above the SAR arc. The observed plasmas and electromagnetic fields suggest that Coulomb collision is the most plausible mechanism for the SAR‐arc generation.

    Description: One of the characteristics that distinguishes the storm-time plasma sheet from the non-storm-time plasma sheet is the enhanced contribution of ionospheric heavy ions, particularly O+. Enhanced outflow is observed throughout the auroral oval during a storm, from the dayside cusp region to the nightside auroral region. The dayside cusp outflow can be enhanced prior to the storm main phase, particularly in association with coronal mass ejections, and it then convects through the lobe to reach the plasma sheet. The nightside aurora shows high fluxes of bursty outflow during the main phase. Recent results have shown that the source of the near-earth plasma sheet can change dramatically during storms in response to changes in the interplanetary magnetic field. This talk will use a combination of statistical measurements from FAST/TEAMS in the auroral regions with recent measurements from the Arase, MMS and Van Allen Probes satellites to address the conditions that drive the outflow and bring it into the plasma sheet. The goal is to understand how the system-level drivers enhance the ionospheric contribution, and how that affects the geomagnetic storms.

    Description: Jupiter’s weather layer exhibits long-term and quasi-periodic cycles of meteorological activity. There are cycles with intervals from 4 to 9 years, dependent on the latitude, which were detected in 5μm radiation, which provides a window into the cloud-forming regions of the troposphere. However, the origin of these cycles has been a mystery. We propose that magnetic torsional oscillations/waves arising from the dynamo region could modulate the heat transport and hence be responsible for the variability of the tropospheric activity. These axisymmetric waves are magnetohydrodynamic waves influenced by the rapid rotation, which have been detected in Earth’s core. Using the Juno magnetic field model, together with the density distribution model, we compute the expected speed of these waves. For the wave excited by variations in the zonal jet flows, their wavelength can be estimated from the width of the alternating jets, yielding waves with a half period of 3-5 years at mid latitudes, consistent with the intervals with the cycles of variability of Jupiter’s North Equatorial/Temperate Belt identified in the visible and infrared observations. The nature of these waves is revealed by technique, dynamic mode decomposition, applied to the spatio-temporal data for 5μm emission. Our results imply that exploration of these magnetohydrodynamic waves may provide a new window to the origins of quasi-periodic patterns in Jupiter's tropospheric clouds and to the internal dynamics/dynamo of Jupiter.

    Description: Microbursts are impulsive injections of energetic (few keV to MeV) electrons into the atmosphere, primarily caused by nonlinear scattering by whistler mode chorus waves. While the relative importance of microburst precipitation as a loss process has not been fully quantified, many studies have shown microbursts may be a major loss source for outer radiation belt electrons. Conjunction observations between the FIREBIRD II CubeSats and Van Allen Probes (RBSP) from 2015 – 2019 have presented the opportunity to quantify the importance of microburst precipitation. We utilize this conjunction dataset, along with additional observations of chorus and microburst precipitation, when available, to constrain the size of the microburst-producing chorus region. We will present statistical results for the upper and lower bounds on the size of the region. Additionally, we will discuss wave properties, including amplitude, wave normal angle, duration, and microburst properties including flux and duration to further understand the observable dependence.

    Description: Using the plasma instruments (LEPi, LEPe, MEPi and MEPe) onboard the Arase satellite, we can comprehensively investigate the fluxes of electrons and ions with different energies. Also, the in-situ electron density can be estimated by using the upper hybrid resonance frequencies detected from the plasma wave spectrum. The geomagnetic storm that commenced on 8 September 2017 has a Dst minimum of -147nT and appears to be a medium-sized magnetic storm at first glance, but it is known that it was a peculiar magnetic storm in various ways. For example, it is an extreme erosion of the plasmasphere to around L=1.5, and a strong SAPS generation. Our previous research suggested that this extreme erosion of the plasmasphere was the result of a convective electric field that continued to penetrate into the magnetic equatorial region for more than 6 hours, however, the reason for the continuation of the convection field was unclear. We therefore compare the evolution of ring current particles during this peculiar magnetic storm to the magnetic storm which commenced on 25 August 2018, which has a similar Dst minimum (-175nT) and erode plasmasphere to around L=2.5.
