    Abstract: The aim of this book is to present, in depth, updated information on soil and microbial processes involved in mixed plantations of Eucalyptus and N2-fixing species, especially Acacia mangium, focusing on Forestry, Soils, Biology, Ecosystem Services and Sustainability. The potential of substituting chemical N fertilizer by a consortium of leguminous species that fix atmospheric nitrogen is an interesting solution for a more sustainable, economically and environmentally sound forest system. Among the main topics, we present reference topics on soil microbiology, as biological nitrogen fixation, the role of mycorrhiza in mixed plantations, bio-indicators of soil quality, and plantgrowth promoting bacteria with biotechnological potential. Here we discuss Ecosystem services and ecological benefits of these systems, the invasive potential of A.mangium, as well as the regulations and perspectives of land use policies for mixed forests and their role in the sustainability of the system.

    Abstract: This book explores how lessons from past urban planning experiences can inform current debates on urban agriculture. Productive landscapes today have been posited as instruments for the positive transformation related to territorial fragility and abandonment, promoting social cohesion, food security and wider environmental and economic benefits. The book will re-map the way in which seeming landscape limitations and challenges can be turned into potential, innovation and a new lease of urban-rural life. It does so by drawing on significant past urban agricultural experiences in planning as vectors for new critical reflections relevant to re-igniting ideas for future envisioning of urban scenarios in which productive landscapes play fundamental transformative roles. The focus is on planning ideas and the roles of key individual planners, all of which have designed agricultural strategies for the city at some point in their careers.     Abstract: Urban greening policies and measures have recently shown a high potential impact on the design and reshaping of the built environment, especially in urban regeneration processes. This book provides insights on analytical methods, planning strategies and shared governance tools for successfully integrating Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the urban planning practice. The selected contributions present real-life application cases, in which the mainstreaming of NBS are investigated according to two main challenges: the planning and designing of physical and spatial integration of NBS in cities on one side, and the implementation of suitable shared governance models and co-creation pathways on the other. Chapter 5 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com. The authors have done an excellent job in presenting extremely comprehensive information and knowledge about NBS in a very simple and easy to understand way, even by non-experts. Congrats to them, the EU-funded projects that supported the research such as Horizon 2020 project Clever Cities. I hope the urban authorities and the professionals in the field will embrace it and use it in exercising their daily duties and tasks.     Description: In climate model simulations of future climate change, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is projected to decline. However, the impacts of this decline, relative to other changes, remain to be identified. Here we address this problem by analyzing 30 idealized abrupt-4xCO2 climate model simulations. We find that in models with larger AMOC decline, there is a minimum warming in the North Atlantic, a southward displacement of the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone, and a poleward shift of the mid-latitude jet. The changes in the models with smaller AMOC decline are drastically different: there is a relatively larger warming in the North Atlantic, the precipitation response exhibits a wet-get-wetter, dry-get- drier pattern, and there are smaller displacements of the mid-latitude jet. We further investigate the impacts of a weakened AMOC in ad-hoc model experiments using EC-Earth3, a state-of-the-art climate model participating in CMIP6. We compare two model experiments forced with abrupt-4xCO2: one in which the AMOC weakens, and another one in which we artificially force the AMOC to stay at the same strength as in the preindustrial control simulation. With these experiments we are able to further investigate mechanisms of AMOC induced climate change impacts, using a moisture budget framework and assessing daily impacts on weather regimes. Overall, our work indicates that the AMOC is a major source of inter-model uncertainty, and continued observational efforts are needed to constrain the impacts of an AMOC decline in future climate change.

    Description: The radiative IR cooling of CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 in the middle atmosphere, where it emits under non-LTE conditions, is a crucial contribution to the energy balance of this region and hence to establishing its thermal structure. The non-LTE computation is heavily CPU time-consuming for being fully incorporated in GCMs climate models; hence, it is usually parameterized. One of the most used parameterizations of the CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 15 μm cooling for the middle/upper atmosphere was developed by Fomichev et al. (1998). However, the valid range of this parameterization with respect to CO2 volume mixing ratios is exceeded by the CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 of several scenarios considered in the most recent Coupled Climate Model Intercomparison Projects; in particular for the 4xCO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 experiment. Therefore, an extension of that parameterization is very timely and highly needed. In this contribution, we will present the new parameterization, covering from half of the pre-industrial CO2 profile up to ten times that profile. A validation of the parameterization will also be shown, with thorough comparisons of its cooling rates with 1) those obtained by the previous parameterization (for six pressure/temperatures references atmospheres) and; 2) the cooling rates calculated by a full line-by-line non-LTE model (GRANADA, Funke et al., 2012) for 2.a) those reference atmospheres and 2.b) those computed for global (2D) MIPAS temperature measurements taken for four different seasons.

    Description: Intensive agriculture has generally resulted in higher productivity, but also in a trend towards decreasing levels of agro-biodiversity, which represents a key point in ensuring the adaptability and resilience of agro-ecosystems in the global challenge to produce more and better food in a sustainable way. The biodiversity of vegetable crops includes genetic diversity—both as species diversity (interspecific diversity) and as a diversity of genes within a species (intraspecific diversity) with regard to the vegetable varieties grown—and the diversity of agro-ecosystems (agro-biodiversity). The purpose of this Special Issue is to publish high-quality research papers addressing recent progress and perspectives on different aspects related to the biodiversity of vegetable crops. Original, high-quality contributions that have not yet been published, or that are not currently under review by other journals have been sought. The papers in this Special Issue cover a broad range of aspects and report recent research results regarding agro-biodiversity, which continues to be of significant relevance for both genetic and agricultural applications. All contributions are of significant relevance and could stimulate further research in this area.

    Description: The scientific and technical achievements of the last decades have enabled man to achieve an unquestionable life comfort. Paradoxically, however, they also stand behind his existential struggles, where the need to slow down the pace and restore one’s own emotional and cognitive resources, revive communication models based on immediate contact, be authentic, creative, stronger, and so on breaks through the surface. One way of looking for a personal way of life and its meaning is through a religious, more precisely, spiritual experience. We consider the mystical experience to be the modality of the spiritual expression or, more precisely, its autonomous part. We see it as a descent of man into his own interior, so called the centre, in which he acquires a pouring knowledge of the nature of God. Although it is an individual and spontaneous experience, it is characterized by some universal features: imagery as a means of conveying the inexpressible content and as an archetypal basis of spiritual tradition. The publication focuses on the literary-artistic forms of the mystical experience as well as the literary forms of mystagogy, that is the interpretation of the mystical experience of the mystic. Through individual analytical-interpretative contributions based on the works of the mystics of the Western Christian tradition, we will try to enter into a specific image of ineffability modelled (the language of mystical unification) and reflexively stimulated (the language of mystagogy) by mystical experience. This is a complex subject confirmed by its basic attribute (inexpressibility at the language level) and by its thought-initiated tensions (for example, interior vs. exterior, authentic vs. ritual, profane vs. sacred, natural vs. supernatural).
