Description: The evolution of the Mexican fisheries policy has occurred in diverse political, economic and social contexts, which have had different connotations, specific to the moment in which they occurred, and always with the aim of achieving an adequate administration and management of this economic activity; for this reason, the present work approaches, at first, the conceptual framework that has the development of a public policy to detonate a sector of the economy; In a second moment, the description of six key historical moments in the construction of the Mexican fishing policy, that allow to understand its present state; and in a third moment, a concentrate of the inputs-outputs of each stage is made, which favor or limit the medium and long-term development of the fishing activity. This shows the situation of a sector with a broadly functional legislative framework, but in terms of implementation has multiple weaknesses and deficiencies so that administrations can maintain the development of the fishing sector in Mexico.

Description: There is a widespread use of statistical tests to evaluate measurement scales of latent constructs in the business arena. However, the results of these tests can yield misleading conclusions regarding the validity of measurement scales. Therefore, content validity has to be considered in order to avoid misleading outcomes. Through an empirical example, this paper shows how different statistical tests used to analyse discriminant validity yield ambiguous findings. Consequently, discriminant validity should be theoretically established.

Description: In this research we develop generalized diffusion indexes for the Mexican state and sectorial economic activity. These indexes summarize the dynamics of the local cycles in a way that they are consistent with the aggregate economic activity. The proposed index includes three dimensions of the local dynamic activity: i) the variation of local cycles (positive or negative), ii) the magnitude of these variations and iii) the weight of local components (states and/or sectors) on the aggregate economic activity. The main contribution of these indexes is that they admit sub-aggregations of regions and/or sectors that are more precise and informative than their counterparts. We show two applications. In the first one, we develop the generalized diffusion index for the Mexican economy using state economic coincident indexes. In the second one, we create a diffusion index of the state and sectorial economic activity using the State Quarterly Indicator of Economic Activity (ITAEE by its Spanish acronym) produced by INEGI.

Description: In this paper we introduce two general non-parametric first-order stationary time-series models for which marginal (invariant) and transition distributions are expressed as infinite-dimensional mixtures. That feature makes them the first Bayesian stationary fully non-parametric models developed so far. We draw on the discussion of using stationary models in practice, as a motivation, and advocate the view that exible (non-parametric) stationary models might be a source for reliable inferences and predictions. It will be noticed that our models adequately fit in the Bayesian inference framework due to a suitable representation theorem. A stationary scale-mixture model is developed as a particular case along with a computational strategy for posterior inference and predictions. The usefulness of that model is illustrated with the analysis of Euro/USD exchange rate log-returns.

Description: This paper describes and tries to quantify the effects of some factors that have affected costs of state owned electric utilities in Mexico (energy losses, fuel and labor). It is noted that the impact of the increases in fuel prices on the electric utilities' total cost in the last years has been important. However, the over-cost associated to energy losses and labor is also significant and comparable to the impact of the increase in fuel prices. The structure of cross subsidies in the industry is also described, pointing out that it is complex and makes the performance evaluation of the state owned electric utilities difficult.

Description: This work analyses the changes in entrepreneurship of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) after privatization, including sales of firms and deregulation. A sample of Spanish firms privatized between 1985 and 2000 shows that these companies have experienced a significant increase in entrepreneurship. After privatization their level of product, process and organizational innovation is higher; they also develop new businesses at domestic level, reinforce their international activity and embark on strategic renewal processes. In addition, we have found that these changes become more drastic when competition is high.

Description: From the irruption of Internet, companies have undertaken a career for obtaining a position in the electronic business. However, this investment is being accomplishing without having a clear feedback of the profitability that the use of these technologies reports. This work analyzes in which measured the behavior of the company in Internet is associated to the structural capital. In doing so, we have applied hierarchic regression on a sample of 164 companies of the Telecommunications industry. Our results show that the mere presence in Internet does not provide necessarily a value to the company, in contraposition to companies that actually make transactions in Internet, furthermore, it is observed that the size is associated positively to the structural capital.

Description: The aim of this work is to analyze the link between variables concerning public financial information and intangibles investment for technological firms. The investigation focuses on firms in Nasdaq-100 index during the 1999-2004 period. Two groups have been obtained by means of cluster analysis according its degree of investment in the so-called intangible factor. The effect of profit or losses, amortization, total assets and product expenses over intangible investment has been analyzed by means of discriminant analysis.

Description: This paper analyses the relationship between firm performance and women on boards and top management positions in a sample of large Spanish firms in the period 2000-2004. The results of the study indicate that the percentage of women on boards and top management teams is much lower in industrial and technological sectors than in services. The participation of women is greater in industries that have greater percentages of women in the workforce. The relationship between women participation on boards and firm performance depend on the measure of female representation and the measure of firm performance. The variation of firm performance in the period 2000-2004 does not explain the variation of female representation on boards and top management during that period.

Description: The present work represents an analysis of the different strengths and weaknesses that can be considered as key factors in making easier or more difficult the internationalisation process of the family firm. In one hand, based to the resources and capabilities theory, we show how family businesses can find enough reasons for its internationalisation if they consider that their competitive advantage could be based on some of them, specially those ones linked to intangible resources. On the other hand, we also explain others factors that can limit or facilitate the internationalisation process whose origin is the overlap of family and firm systems.
