    Notes: Summary. We estimate condition numbers of $p$ -version matrices for tensor product elements with two choices of reference element degrees of freedom. In one case (Lagrange elements) the condition numbers grow exponentially in $p$ , whereas in the other (hierarchical basis functions based on Tchebycheff polynomials) the condition numbers grow rapidly but only algebraically in $p$ . We conjecture that regardless of the choice of basis the condition numbers grow like $p^{4d}$ or faster, where $d$ is the dimension of the spatial domain.

    Notes: A minor stabilization effect was found for the content of total lipids, total fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) when Artemia franciscana was maintained at high concentrations of Isochrysis galbana for 72 h at 12 °C, both in 3- and 4-day-old individuals. The eicosapentaenoic (EPA) level was only stabilized at higher algal concentrations in the 4-day-old A. franciscana. In the 3-day-old A. franciscana, the EPA content increased at all algal concentrations during the first 24 h of post enrichment, presumably as an effect of DHA catabolism. Apparently, the 4-day-old A. franciscana metabolized DHA, and other lipids, faster than the 3-day-old A. franciscana did. During the 72 h incubation with I. galbana, the content of ascorbic acid (AA) in A. franciscana increased approximately to 1000–1200 μg g–1 dry weight (DW) at algal concentrations above 3 mg C L–1, close to AA content of the algae. The vitamin B6 content in A. franciscana decreased from approximately 20 to 4–11 μg g–1 DW, with highest loss rates at the higher algal concentrations. The thiamin content of A. franciscana was independent of algal concentration and remained at 20–30 μg g–1 DW. The nutritional effects of the algal incubation on the 3- and 4-day-old A. franciscana at algal concentrations which can be used during the cultivation of Atlantic-halibut larvae (〈2 mg C L–1) was insignificant, except for the small enrichment effect of AA already at 1 mg C L–1. Other beneficial effects of the algae should not be ruled out, like possible effects on the microflora of A. franciscana even at algal concentrations less than 2 mg C L–1.

    Notes: The Campanian Cliff House Formation represents a series of individually progradational shoreface tongues preserved in an overall landward-stepping system. In the Mancos Canyon area, the formation consists of four, 50- to 55-m-thick and 10- to 20-km-wide sandstone tongues, which pinch out landwards into lower coastal plain and lagoonal deposits of the Upper Menefee Formation and seawards into offshore shales of the Lewis Shale Formation. Photogrammetric mapping of lithofacies along the steep and well-exposed canyon walls was combined with sedimentary facies analysis and mapping of the detailed facies architecture. Two major facies associations have been identified, one comprising the mostly muddy and organic-rich facies of lagoonal and lower coastal plain origin and one comprising the sandstone-dominated facies of shoreface origin. Key stratigraphic surfaces were identified by combining the mapped geometry of the lithofacies units with the interpretation of depositional processes. The stratigraphic surfaces (master ravinement surface, shoreface/coastal plain contact, transgressive surface, maximum flooding surface and the sequence boundary) allow each major sandstone tongue to be divided into a simple sequence, consisting of a basal transgressive system tract (TST) overlain by a highstand system tract (HST). Within each sandstone tongue, a higher frequency cyclicity is evident. The high-frequency cycles show a complex stacking pattern development and are commonly truncated in the downdip direction by surfaces of regressive marine erosion. The complexities of the Cliff House sandstone tongues are believed to reflect changes in the rate of sea-level rise combined with the responses of the depositional system to these changes. Synsedimentary compaction, causing a thickness increase in the sandstone tongues above intervals of previously uncompacted lagoonal/coastal plain sediments, also played a role. This study of the facies architecture, geometry and sequence stratigraphy of the Cliff House Formation highlights the fact that there may be some problems in applying conventional sequence stratigraphical methods to landward-stepping systems in general. These difficulties stem from the fact that no single stratigraphic surface can easily be identified and followed from the non-marine to the fully marine realm (i.e. from the landward to the basinward pinch-out of the sandstone tongues). In addition, the effects of synsedimentary compaction and changes in the shoreface dynamics are not easily recognized in limited data sets such as from the subsurface.

    Notes: Abstract In Artemia franciscana, enriched for 24 h with emulsified lipids, thefatty acid DHA (22:6ω3) is unstable. In rotifers the level of DHA canbe stabilised by adding algae rich in DHA to the fish tanks. To test thismethod for A. franciscana, enriched A. franciscana was incubated with thealga Isochrysis galbana, which is rich in lipids and DHA, at sixconcentrations ranging from 1 to 20 mg C l−1 at 13–14°C. After lipid enrichment, A. franciscana contained15% lipids of which 79% (116 mg g DW−1) werefatty acids. Of the fatty acids, 17% was DHA (19.8 mg gDW−1). After 72 hours incubation with I. galbana, the level ofDHA decreased to 1.6–3.2 mg g DW−1, which was areduction by 84–92%. This was independent of the algalconcentration. The amount of total fatty acids decreased to 53–73 mg gDW−1, a reduction by 37–54%, independent of thealgal concentration. The rates of loss of the fatty acids, and especiallyDHA, was greater during the first 24 h at the highest algal concentrations(8, 10 and 20 mg C l−1). Enriched A. franciscana shouldtherefore not be incubated with high algal concentrations (〉6 mg Cl−1) during first feeding of marine fish larvae.

    Notes: Summary A procedure is described for culturing lymphocytes from Peyer's patches of the canine small intestine. A description is provided for the identification and removal of the lymphoid tissue (Peyer's patch), preparation of the tissue, separation of the lymphocytes from the tissue, and subsequent culturing of the lymphocytes. This procedure can be performed in 8 h, provides adequate antibiotic doses to prevent bacterial contamination, and describes how to remove excessive intestinal mucus from the preparation. This technique can be used for the preparation of lymphocytes from other lymphoid organs.
