    Description: The genus Octopoteuthis includes squids inhabiting meso- and bathypelagic waters worldwide. Of the seven presently named species distributed in the world’s oceans, only Octopoteuthis sicula has been reported for certain in the Mediterranean Sea to date. However, mixed and confusing descriptions of the systematic characters useful for identifying the species occur in the literature. Similarly, molecular analysis results available for the genus are contradictory and inconsistent. The research herein was undertaken firstly to clarify the systematic status of the genus in the Mediterranean Sea and confirm the presence of a single species, namely O. sicula. Additional goals were the assessment of the validity of systematic characters to identify the species and the analysis of beak morphology to provide useful tools in prey–predator relationship studies. Octopoteuthis specimens from various areas of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were compared, and the analysis of traditional morphological characters was combined with molecular genetics and the study of beaks. Molecular genetics and beak morphology results support the existence of a single species in the Mediterranean Sea. Additional evidence would suggest that this species is also distributed in the north-eastern Atlantic. The morphological characters reported in the literature to identify O. sicula did not identify Mediterranean specimens, with the exception of the two tail photophores. All information collected supports the need for a reconsideration of morphological characters used to identify Octopoteuthis species.

    Description: Landslide is one of the dangerous types of natural hazards. This phenomenon causes damages in many countries every year. A detailed landslide hazard assessment is necessary to reduce these damages. This research aims to map the landslide susceptibility zoning (LSZ) using the fuzzy logic method and GIS in the Sorkhab basin as a part of the Zagros fold and thrust belt (FTB), northwestern Iran. All slide types were recorded in fieldwork as landslide inventory. Based on the results, four types, i.e., debris slide, earth slide, and rock fall and complex of landslides, was identified in the region. Then, the effect of each landslide contributing factor including topographical elevation heights, slope classes, aspect classes, geological units, proximity to faults, land covers, rainfall classes, and proximity to streams was constructed in GIS and subsequently normalized using fuzzy membership functions. Finally, by combining all standardized layers using the fuzzy gamma operator, a final map of LSZ was produced. The results showed that a 0.9 fuzzy gamma operator has a high accuracy for the LSZ map in the study area. Besides, the accuracy of the LSZ map revealed a strong relationship (R2) between susceptibility classes, and landslide inventory was calculated using a scatter plot equal to 0.79. Hence, the method represented an appropriate accuracy in predicting the landslide susceptibility in the study area.

    Description: A total of 104 Semirossia patagonica were collected all over the Patagonian shelf between the depths of 47 and 295 m. Mature female size varied from 10 to 35 mm ML, mature male size was 16–32 mm. Potential fecundity ranged between 527–766 eggs in pre-spawning females, ripe egg size was 3.4–5.0 mm. The oviduct capacity probably was no more than 30 eggs. The maximum number of spermatophores in males was 229. Males transfer 2–19 spermatophores to females during copulation. The ovulation pattern is asynchronous, individual spawning is continuous. Reproduction occurs all year round. Semirossia patagonica is a south-west Atlantic ecological sibling of north-east Atlantic bobtail squids Sepiola spp. and Sepietta spp.

    Description: The potential fecundity (PF) of advanced maturing and mature pre-spawning cuttlefish S. officinalis in the Aegean Sea varies from 3,700 to 8,000 (mean 5,871) oocytes, whereas the number of large yolk oocytes increases with mantle length from 130 to 839. Small oocytes predominate at all maturity stages. Spawning animals have a PF of some 1,000-3,000 eggs below that of pre-spawning females. This shows that intermittent spawning, which occurs in captivity, is a normal process in natural habitats. Empty follicular sheaths are resorbed very rapidly, and their number does not represent the number of eggs laid by the female prior to sampling. Regulative oocyte resorption was observed at early maturation in some cuttlefishes.

    Description: Squid of the genus Alloteuthis from the Aegean Sea and eastern Mediterranean were identified as A. media. It is not possible to distinguish A. media from A. subulata by relative fin length. Both ‘species’ are probably intraspecific forms. Egg size varied from 1·5 to 2·3 mm. Oocyte maturation in the ovary occurs in batches. The potential fecundity is some 1000–4000 eggs, most of these being released during continuous spawning accompanied by female growth.

    Description: Studies on the cephalopods of Turkish coasts have been going on since 1988. As a result of these studies, a total of 43 species have been determined, comprising 11 species from the Sea of Marmara, 38 from the Aegean Sea and 24 from the Mediterranean Sea. With respect to other studies carried out excluding Turkish coasts, the eastern Mediterranean cephalopod fauna has increased to 51 species. Among the species determined, Ancistrocheirus lesueurii and Ancistroteuthis lichtensteini are new records for the eastern Mediterranean; Sepietta obscura, Ancistrocheirus lesueurii, Ancistroteuthis lichtensteini and Tremoctopus violaceus for the Aegean Sea; and Alloteuthis media, Rossia macrosoma and Eledone cirrhosa for the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

    Description: Female reproductive features have been investigated in five polar and deep-sea bobtail squid genera Rossia and Neorossia (R. macrosoma, R. moelleri, R. pacifica, N.c. caroli and N.c. jeannae). These species are characterized by asynchronous ovary maturation, very large eggs (〉10% ML), fecundity of several hundred oocytes, very high reproductive output, and continuous spawning with low batch fecundity. This adaptive complex of reproductive traits evolved in these small animals as an optimum strategy for polar and deep-water habitats.

    Description: Thirteen adult individuals of a small octopus species of the Octopus aegina complex, 7 males and 6 females, were caught by trawl on bottoms ranging from 60 to 70 m of depth off the southern coast of Turkey, close to Mersin. This species (which is similar to O. kagoshimensis) was never before recorded in the Mediterranean. Further to the West on the southern Turkish coast (Gulf of Bodrum), a single individual of a pelagic squid of the genus Octopoteuthis was captured. The tentative identification as O. megaptera is based on the body shape and the presence and position of two caudal mantle photophores; this is the first record of this species in the Mediterranean. These observations are discussed with regard to questions of species identification and possible recent species range extensions due to immigration from the Atlantic, or from the Red Sea (Lessepsian migration).

    Description: This study provides a description of the Mediterranean monk seal ( Monachus monachus ) diet from the Aegean Sea coast of Turkey. A total of 23 prey items belonging to five species were identified from the two stomachs examined. Cephalopods constitute the dominant prey group by weight (94·01%). Sarcotragus sp. (Porifera) and Posidonia oceanica (Magnoliophyta) are assumed to be incidental prey. Of the cephalopods identified, Eledone moschata and Bathypolypus sponsalis were encountered for the first time in a monk seal stomach.
