    Description: Highlights: • GEOTRACES releases its first integrated and quality controlled Intermediate Data Product 2014 (IDP2014). • The IDP2014 digital data are available at http://www.bodc.ac.uk/geotraces/data/idp2014/ in 4 different formats. • The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas at http://egeotraces.org/ provides 329 section plots and 90 animated 3D tracer scenes. • The new 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context crucial for tracer assessment and interpretation. Abstract: The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2014 (IDP2014) is the first publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2013. It consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 200 trace elements and isotopes (TEIs) as well as classical hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing a strongly inter-linked on-line atlas including more than 300 section plots and 90 animated 3D scenes. The IDP2014 covers the Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian oceans, exhibiting highest data density in the Atlantic. The TEI data in the IDP2014 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at cross-over stations. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII spreadsheet, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. In addition to the actual data values the IDP2014 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked to the data in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2014 data providing section plots and a new kind of animated 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes allow for viewing of data from many cruises at the same time, thereby providing quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. In addition, the 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of observed tracer plumes, as well as for making inferences about controlling processes.

    Description: The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017 (IDP2017) is the second publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2016. The IDP2017 includes data from the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian oceans, with about twice the data volume of the previous IDP2014. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains data for a large suite of biogeochemical parameters as well as aerosol and rain data characterising atmospheric trace element and isotope (TEI) sources. The TEI data in the IDP2017 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at crossover stations. The IDP2017 consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 450 TEIs as well as standard hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing an on-line atlas that includes more than 590 section plots and 130 animated 3D scenes. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. Users can download the full data packages or make their own custom selections with a new on-line data extraction service. In addition to the actual data values, the IDP2017 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering and for statistical analysis. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2017 as section plots and rotating 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes combine data from many cruises and provide quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. These 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of tracer plumes near ocean margins or along ridges. The IDP2017 is the result of a truly international effort involving 326 researchers from 22 countries. This publication provides the critical reference for unpublished data, as well as for studies that make use of a large cross-section of data from the IDP2017.

    Description: Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction of lipid from Scenedesmus sp. for biodiesel production was investigated and compared to conventional extraction methods. The effect of biomass pre-treatment prior to extraction and extracting conditions, namely pressure in the range of 200–500 bar, temperatures in the range of 35–65 °C and CO2 flow rate in the range of 1.38–4.02 g min−1, on SC-CO2 extraction yield and quality of lipid were investigated. Three levels full factorial design of experiments and response surface methodology was used to model the system. A second order polynomial model was developed and used to predict the optimum conditions. Scaling up to a laboratory larger scale was also tested. The results indicated that SC-CO2 extraction was superior to other extraction techniques, but exhibited significant variations in yield with changes in operating parameters. In the developed model, it was found that the linear and quadratic terms of the temperature, as well as the interaction with pressure had a significant effect on lipid yield; whereas, their effect on lipid quality was insignificant. The best operating conditions, in the tested range, were 53 °C, 500 bar and 1.9 g min−1, in which lipid extraction yield of 7.41% (dry weight basis) was obtained. Negligible differences were observed when the fatty acid composition of SC-CO2 extracted lipid was compared to that extracted by the conventional methods. At the optimum conditions, SC-CO2 extraction was successfully scaled-up by eight-folds and the extracted lipid yield dropped by 16%.

    Description: We present Nemo-Nordic, a Baltic and North Sea model based on the NEMO ocean engine. Surrounded by highly industrialized countries, the Baltic and North seas and their assets associated with shipping, fishing and tourism are vulnerable to anthropogenic pressure and climate change. Ocean models providing reliable forecasts and enabling climatic studies are important tools for the shipping infrastructure and to get a better understanding of the effects of climate change on the marine ecosystems. Nemo-Nordic is intended to be a tool for both short-term and long-term simulations and to be used for ocean forecasting as well as process and climatic studies. Here, the scientific and technical choices within Nemo-Nordic are introduced, and the reasons behind the design of the model and its domain and the inclusion of the two seas are explained. The model's ability to represent barotropic and baroclinic dynamics, as well as the vertical structure of the water column, is presented. Biases are shown and discussed. The short-term capabilities of the model are presented, especially its capabilities to represent sea level on an hourly timescale with a high degree of accuracy. We also show that the model can represent longer timescales, with a focus on the major Baltic inflows and the variability in deep-water salinity in the Baltic Sea.

    Description: The continental Pleistocene Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) had far-reaching marine influence in shaping the ocean-floor adjacent to ice margin. The basinwide submarine-canyon and deep-sea channel system of the Northwest Atlantic Mid-Ocean Channel (NAMOC) of the Labrador Sea is the submarine continuation of the drainge system of the LIS on land, forming an interconnected land/sea drainage system 6,000 km long, one of the word’s longest drainage systems of Pleistocene age. The submarine portion forms a dual system, consisting of the mud-dominated NAMOC with its tributaries and a submarine sandy braid-plain.

    Description: The effluents containing the discarded water from the textile industry are graded as one of the foremost pollutants in all industrial sectors. The wide varieties of dyes, which is susceptible to the possibility of carcinogens or mutagens, and it will be harmful to entire ecosystem. The titanium dioxide, one of the foremost heterogeneous semiconductor photocatalysts, has been acknowledged for the wide applications in hydrogen production from water splitting and degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants since last few decades. The present work is successively advanced for the removal of methylene blue from the seawater. The work was carried under natural sunlight with the presence of C/TiO2 and Cu–C/TiO2. The photocatalytic removal experiment was carried out with different catalyst dosages (0.25–1.25 g/L), different initial concentrations from 5 to 30 μM and at different pH values (3–9). The highest removal rate was found at the optimum condition of pH 8 and 1 g/L. At the optimum condition, 100% efficiency was achieved under natural sunlight. The kinetic studies reveal the pseudo-first-order kinetics and half-life time comparison proves the enhanced visible light harvesting of Cu–C/TiO2.

    Description: Sediment geotechnical properties are an important component of geohazard analyses and studies on submarine slope failures on continental margins. The northern Cascadia margin is a region of repeated subduction earthquakes and related geohazards including devastating tsunamis. Despite several drilling campaigns at this margin mostly for gas hydrate studies, sediment geotechnical properties are lacking to date. We therefore investigated a set of 20 half-round samples from four drill sites of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 311 along a margin-perpendicular transect. Samples were analysed for Atterberg properties (liquid limit, plasticity limit, plasticity index) and consolidation state (pre-consolidation stress, over-consolidation ratio, initial void ratio and compression index). Results of these parameters are in good agreement with similar studies at the southern Cascadia margin from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 and are regarded robust, despite the long time-span between sample recovery in 2005 and our analyses. Individual results are interpreted at each of the drill sites and reflect the overall tectonic state of the location within the accretionary prism. An interplay of site-specific tectonic forcing, including thrust faulting, uplift, folding, and erosion appears to govern the depth-dependent consolidation state of the sediments.

    Description: The air-blood partition coefficient (Kab) is extensively employed in human health risk assessment for chemical exposure. However, current Kab estimation approaches either require an extensive number of parameters or lack precision. In this study, we present two novel and parsimonious models to accurately estimate Kab values for individual neutral organic compounds, as well as their complex mixtures. The first model, termed the GC×GC model, was developed based on the retention times of nonpolar chemical analytes on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC). This model is unique in its ability to estimate the Kab values for complex mixtures of nonpolar organic chemicals. The GC×GC model successfully accounted for the Kab variance (R2 = 0.97) and demonstrated strong prediction power (RMSE = 0.31 log unit) for an independent set of nonpolar chemical analytes. Overall, the GC×GC model can be used to estimate Kab values for complex mixtures of neutral organic compounds. The second model, termed the partition model (PM), is based on two types of partition coefficients: octanol to water (Kow) and air to water (Kaw). The PM was able to effectively account for the variability in Kab data (n = 344), yielding an R2 value of 0.93 and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.34 log unit. The predictive power and explanatory performance of the PM were found to be comparable to those of the parameter-intensive Abraham solvation models (ASMs). Additionally, the PM can be integrated into the software EPI Suite, which is widely used in chemical risk assessment for initial screening. The PM provides quick and reliable estimation of Kab compared to ASMs, while the GC×GC model is uniquely suited for estimating Kab values for complex mixtures of neutral organic compounds. In summary, our study introduces two novel and parsimonious models for the accurate estimation of Kab values for both individual compounds and complex mixtures.
