Description: This study examined the sea cucumber industry in the Philippines through the value chain lens. The intent was to identify effective pathways for the successful introduction of sandfish culture as livelihood support for coastal communities. Value chain analysis is a high-resolution analytical tool that enables industry examination at a detailed level. Previous industry assessments have provided a general picture of the sea cucumber industry in the country. The present study builds on the earlier work and supplies additional details for a better understanding of the industry's status and problems, especially their implications for the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) funded sandfish project "Culture of sandfish (Holothuria scabra) in Asia- Pacific" (FIS/2003/059). Description: The Gulf of Batabanó (GB), is the region of the Cuban marine platform of greater extension and fishing importance. Habitat effects of marine species have been reported as a consequence of natural and anthropic factors. The objective was to determine significant spatio-temporal variations in the hydrology of GB in different periods and environmental situations. For this, the variability of rainfall and air temperature was analyzed in 1975-1995 and 1996-2015 periods of low and high cyclonic activity, the thermohaline characteristics of the GB before (1959-1970) and after (2006-2016) the river damming, and the effect of two hurricanes almost simultaneous in 2008 (“Gustav” and “Ike”). Significant differences in the interannual variability of meteorological parameters between the north and south of the GB corresponded to local characteristics, and changes occurred in the distribution of the months of maximum rainfall. The perennial impact of the damming, coupled with temporary precipitation deficits in spring, summer and winter, caused thermohaline increases in 2006-2016, with an increase of 0.7 °C in water temperature and 2.3 in average salinity of the GB, with respect to 1959-1970. Salinity showed an increase in the distribution of hypersaline values, and an average 〉 36 in months of high rainfall, with a general average of 35.4 in 1959 -1970 and 37.7 in 2006-2016, this suggests that damming has been a major factor in the increase in salinity. The thermohaline impact in the GB of two hurricanes in 2008 was restored in the short term, with greater inertia in turbidity.

Description: A scheme of the larval drift and recruitment areas of the land crab Cardisoma guanhumi from the Zapata swamp is presented, considering the spawning migration, the duration of the larval stage and the direction and average speed of marine currents in Cochinos bay. Females travel up to a maximum of 12 km to reach the sea according to the distances of the evaluated colonies. It is recognized that once the spawning occurred in the marine coastal areas of Maquina beach, La Gallina and Gurugú, north of Cochinos bay, surface circulation of marine waters is responsible for the distribution of larvae, whose route according to surface drift and larval recruitment zones of the species occur from north to south of Cochinos bay for areas of the western zone. The distribution and estimated population structure suggest that there is a main recruitment in the area of Guamutal and La Arenera from where a displacement occurs to other areas that constitute critical habitats of the species. The information related to the reproductive migration and larval drift of C. guanhumi crab, is important for the sustainable management of the species and a baseline for potential capture regulations according to critical areas of the life cycle in the Zapata swamp region.

Description: Stock assessments can be problematic because of uncertainties associated with the data or because of simplified assumptions made when modeling biological processes (Rosenberg and Restrepo, 1995). For example, the common assumption in stock assessments that stocks are homogeneous and discrete (i.e., there is no migration between the stocks) is not necessarily true (Kell et al., 2004a, 2004b).

Description: Fisheries conflicts are among the persistent problems affecting the security of food, livelihoods and fishing environments crucial to poor fishing communities in developing countries in South and Southeast Asia. Most conflicts arise from excessive fishing efforts due to increasing population and economic motivations. Conflicts are not all undesirable as some disputes become a catalyst for much needed reforms for policy and economic improvements. However, a framework for analyzing conflicts in fisheries is necessary to organize interventions relevant to the nature of conflicts, and the needs and capacities of fisheries stakeholders in the region. The WorldFish Center, together with research partners, conducted studies that identify a framework for managing fisheries conflicts. Thematic policy recommendations for managing fishing capacity and related conflicts in small-scale fisheries in the region are identified for further consideration by fisheries stakeholders.

Description: The Cogtong Bay experience represents a bold attempt to pursue a shared responsibility between the government and local residents for rehabilitating coastal resources. Some of the factors that provided the impetus to co-management arrangements were the recognition of resource management problems, dependence on coastal resources for livelihood and the desire for more sustainable resource use. This paper draws attention to the importance of legitimate user/property rights, vigilant law enforcement efforts, common commitment among stakeholders and continuing support from local leadership in viable co-management arrangements.

Description: The diet composition of fish caught in San Miguel Bay, Philippines, in April and May 1993 was studied. The diets of tiger-tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber), commerson's anchovy (Stolephorus commersonii); and the Indian anchovy (Stolephorus indicus) consisted mainly of zooplankton, primarily crustaceans. The stomach content of orangefin ponyfish (Leiognathus bindus) was found to consist mostly of detritus and unidentified materials. Daily rations estimated were: 1.90 g day super(1) for O. ruber of 17.3 g mean body weight (BW), 0.078 g day super(1) for S. commersonii) of 3.8 g mean BW, 0.062 g day super(1) for S. indicus of 3.9 g mean BW and 0.56 g day super(1) for L. bindus of 7.7 g mean BW.
