Peak shapes were simulated in time-of-Hight mass spectrometers incorporating reflectrons, assuming short-duration, constant ion-production rates from plane surfaces. Calculations were performed for various initial velocity distributions: both Maxwell-Boltzmann and exponential distributions for laser desorption, Gries distribution for secondary ions and Riggi-Furstenau distribution for plasma-desorption generated ions. The influence of an exponential decrease of the ion production rate on the peak shape was also illustrated in some cases.
