Notes: A mathematical model for evaluating the molecular intensity produced by a solenoid-actuated pulsed beam source is described. The particular source studied here is used to introduce reactant gas pulses at various user-specified intervals into a fixed-bed microreactor system for transient catalysis studies where quantification of the inlet pulse intensity is required for data analysis. The model equations which describe the beam source performance utilize relationships from one-dimensional isentropic gas expansion, gas effusion through a small hole, and macroscopic mass balances around the valve orifice from which a closed-form algebraic expression for the pulse intensity is obtained. The parameters in this expression represent observables which include the ideal gas specific heat capacity ratio, the stagnation properties of the gas in the supply chamber of the beam source, and the beam valve driver settings. Comparisons between experimental and predicted values for the pulse intensities, where the latter are of the order 1017 molecules per pulse, show excellent agreement.

Notes: Abstract. A simple quark pair creation model is introduced to study exclusive decays of χ{c_J} into baryon-antibaryon pairs. With this simple model, some exclusive decay processes, for example, χ{c0} → B¯ (B = Λ,Σ0,Ξ-) are investigated and their decay widths are evaluated by inclusion of the properties of outgoing baryons, and the results show that the strengthened decay channels χ{c_J} → Λ¯(J = 0, 2) are easily understood by considering only the color singlet contribution of P-wave charmonium.

Notes: Abstract We re-analyze the spectator proton distribution for ¯pd→π + π− π− p. For this channel previous calculations underestimated the cross section for proton momenta of 300 to 600 MeV/c by about a factor 7 while the channels with higher pion multiplicities and the ¯pd→K¯ Kmπp reactions were well explained. By using detailed experimental information on ¯pn and ¯pp annihilation, meson rescattering can in fact explain the cross section also for the 3π case. The¯ pp annihilation followed by charge exchange pion rescattering is much larger than in the 5π case. Vector meson exchange is small but not negligible at high spectator momenta.

Notes: Abstract We calculate the shape of the proton spectator distribution in $$\bar pd \to 5\pi p$$ at low proton momenta. The sensitivity to atomicS- andP-state orbits and to the size of elementarys- andp-wave annihilation is discussed. Implications for the elementary annihilation amplitude $$\bar pn \to 5\pi $$ subthreshold are presented.

Notes: Abstract The magnitudes of the matrix elements for γγ→2π+2π−, γγ→π+π−2π0, γγ→2π+2π−π0, γγ→2π+2π−2π0, γγ→3π+3π−3π+ and γγ→3π+3π−π0are deduced from experimental data as a function of the invariant massW of the system (from 1.0 to 3.0 GeV). It is shown that the data are consistent with a universal energy dependence of the reduced channel amplitudes. A statistical model is shown to describe the peaks in the energy dependence of multipion production in γγ collisions quite well without introducing explicit intermediate resonances.

Notes: Abstract We study the two-meson intermediate state contributions to the¯ pp →φφ reaction. The estimated cross section from the ¯KK intermediate states is close to the recent preliminary data of the JETSET experiment at LEAR. We have also analysedpp intermediate states and ω-φ mixing mechanisms. Their contributions are found to be much smaller than the ¯KK contribution. Implications for the search of gluonic intermediate states are discussed. Results on similar intermediate two-meson contributions to ¯pp →φπ at rest are also briefly presented.

Notes: Abstract We construct a dynamical model to study the pion correlations in the 5π annihilation ofp¯ p at rest. For the resonant channels, the simplest Lorentz-invariant couplings have been used. It is found that, in addition to the Bose-Einstein correlations caused by the finite size of the source, the dynamical correlations from the channels with intermediate resonances are important for explaining the experimental two-pion correlation function. The reliability of two standard methods for pion interferometry is tested in our model.
