Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Schwerspatlagerstätten der Shoshone Range in Nevada zeigen rhythmische Lagen verschiedener Arten.
Notes: Abstract The barite deposits in the Shoshone Range contain rhythmic layering of several types. One type includes interlayered barite and clay seams with iron oxide grains and stains, where the barite beds gradually change in thickness upwards. Top-bottom (geopetal) features are present but differ from those observed in the Arkansas Stanley Shale deposits. Chert and very fine-grained quartz are interlayered with the barite. The thickest barite beds lie where the chert and shaly layers are thinnest. These are features one would normally find in a sediment. These and other observations suggest a formation by syn-diagenetic processes.

Notes: Abstract The combination of laser induced resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) represents a highly selective as well as sensitive analytical technique, well suited for species selective real-time, on-line monitoring of trace-gases. Results presented are obtained with a newly designed, mobile REMPI-TOFMS instrument, optimized for field applications. The mobile REMPI-TOFMS device either is equipped with a compact excimer laser (KrF, λ = 248 nm) or a small Nd:YAG laser (forth harmonic frequency, λ = 266 nm). A special effusive molecular beam inlet system was used, which allows direct inlet of flue gases from e.g. waste incinerators without memory effects for compounds of a molecular weight of up to 260–280 amu. Detection sensitivities in the sub-ppb region are achieved under field measurement conditions. Applications concerning on-line monitoring of combustion byproducts and fuel components are presented. This includes on-line analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the flue gas of a 0.5 MW waste incineration pilot plant, headspace analysis of wood gasification products and crude oil composition (fuel analysis) as well as highly time resolved (single puff resolution) on-line analysis of cigarette smoke. The application of the on-line REMPI-TOFMS monitor for continuous analysis of dioxin indicators in the flue gas of e.g. hazardous waste incinerators is discussed.

Notes: Abstract On-line REMPI-TOFMS laser mass spectrometry (Resonance Enhanced Multi-Photon Ionization – Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry) was used to monitor combustion and pyrolysis byproducts from industrial combustion processes, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and monochlorobenzene in the flue gas of an industrial 22 MW hazardous waste incineration plant. Sampling at different places in the flue gas stream revealed the complexity of the processes responsible for the formation of the different chemical species, while time resolved measurements depicted the emission dynamics.

Notes: Summary In patients on oral warfarin, nicoumalone and phenindione an increase in the anticoagulant effect has been described during concomitant treatment with cimetidine. Therefore the effect of cimetidine on the steady state dynamics of phenprocoumon has been investigated in ten outpatients. No change in the anticoagulant effect of phenprocoumon was observed during or after two weeks on cimetidine, as measured by the thrombotest coagulation method, prothrombin time, fibrinopeptide A concentration and plasma phenprocoumon level. The data show that cimetidine does not interact with the metabolism of phenprocoumon in contrast to warfarin. Thus, phenprocoumon maintenance therapy when combined with concomitant cimetidine treatment can be considered not to carry an increased risk of haemorrhagic complications.

Notes: Summary In a randomized patient-blind study iloprost or hydroxy-ethyl starch 200/0.5 were given i.v. 5 h daily for 2 weeks to 24 patients suffering from severe intermittent claudication due to peripheral vascular disease. An increase in pain-free walking distance of more than 50% occurred in 6 of 11 patients after the iloprost infusions and in 7 of 12 patients after HES treatment. No significant effects on haemodynamic or clinical chemistry tests were observed.

Notes: Summary A previous interaction study of sulfinpyrazone (Anturano®) suggested that it induced microsomal drug metabolizing enzymes in the liver. To verify this finding the effect of sulfinpyrazone 800 mg per day for four weeks was investigated in ten healthy volunteers. Both the therapeutic actions of sulfinpyrazone, the uricosuric and the antiaggregating effects, were demonstrated (p〈0.05). The influence on the microsomal drug metabolizing system in the liver was demonstrated by an increase in serum-λ-glutamyl transpeptidase from 15.1 to 23.3 U/l (p〉0.05), a significant increase in the urinary excretion of d-glucaric acid (29.6 to 77.9 µMol/24 h,p〈0.05) and an increase in antipyrine clearance from 50.3 ml/min to 83.9 ml/min (p〈0.05). The possibility of enhancement of drug metabolism during treatment with sulfinpyrazone in combination with other drugs should be kept in mind.

Notes: Summary Pooled plasma from patients receiving phenprocoumon anticoagulant therapy was extracted and the following substances were characterized: phenprocoumon, and its 7-hydroxy,4′-hydroxy and 6-hydroxy derivatives; they were identified by HPLC and after methylation by quartz capillary GC-MS using the electron impact and selective ion monitoring modes. This is the first occasion when phenprocoumon metabolites have been identified in plasma; they were unconjugated and in much lower concentrations (43.2 and 2 ng/ml for the 7,4′ and 6-hydroxy derivatives, respectively) than the original compound (2000 ng/ml).

Notes: Summary I. Myocardial hypertrophy, for instance in patients with hypertensive heart disease, is characterized by a reduction of coronary vascular reserve, even in the presence of normal coronary arteries. In hypertensive animals, on the microcirculatory level functional changes can be observed before the onset of any structural rarefications. In 10 rats with renal hypertension and pressure-induced left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), the microcirulation of the left ventricular myocardium was studied using in vivo fluorescence microscopy and morphometric analysis. Renal hypertension was provoked by clipping of the left renal artery. After 8 weeks, systolic blood pressure in LVH rats averaged 172 ± 8 mm Hg, compared to 91 ± 2 mmHg in 10 normotensive (NT) rats. In LVH rats, distances of plasma-perfused capillaries were significantly increased (NT = 17.7; LVH = 20 μm;p 〈 0.001). Volume density, surface density, and length density of capillaries in LVH rats were reduced by 20% compared to NT rats. Capillary red cell content as measured by the ratio of capillaries filled with red cells to those containing plasma alone (Q) in LVH animals exceeded that in NT rats (LVH: Q = 0.83 ± 0.04; NT Q = 0.77 ± 0.04;p 〈 0.025). During hypoxia (H, 5% 02) capillary red cell recruitment in LVH rats (Q: control c = 0.83; H = 0.95) was diminished by 33% as compared to NT rats (Q: c = 0.77; H = 0.95). Thus, in addition to the decreased capillary density, the reduction of capillary red cell recruitment may be responsible for chest pain in patients with LVH and normal coronary arteries. 2. In 11 rats, the microcirculation of the repeatedly ischemic (stunned) left ventricular myocardium (SM) was studied using in vivo fluorescence microscopy. Stunning was provoked by 6 subsequent 10 minute ligations of the left anterior descending coronary artery, each of them followed by a 20 min reperfusion period. In the SM showing hypokinetic wall motion mean capillary blood flow velocity was markedly reduced (control c =1312; SM = 694 μm/sec;p 〈 0.001): myocardial blood flow (hydrogen clearance) in the SM dropped by 55%. In SM, leukocytes often appeared in slow-flow capillaries plugging capillary branches: the percentage of capillaries and postcapillary venules with adherent leukocytes was markedly increased (c = 3%; SM = 68%). In close link to leukocyte adherence, a rise of microvascular permeability was documented by extravascular clouds of fluorescent dextran. The ratio of capillaries filled with red cells to those containing plasma alone was diminished in SM (c = 0.77; SM = 0.65;p 〈 0.001). In the SM there are microcirculatory disturbances which occur before the onset of detectable structural alterations of both the microvasculature and the myocyte.

Notes: Summary Disorder-induced Rayleigh scattering of excitons in quantum wells is investigated theoretically. For classical excitions (long-range spatial correlation), the disorder average can be performed exactly. For the full problem, a kinetic equation with «weak memory» for the excition distribution is derived which coincides with the classical result in the appropriate limit. The theoretical results are compared with recent experimental data on femtosecond time-resolved luminescence explaining well the finite rise time and the heavy-light-hole beating.
