Description: One of the most significant global events in the last forty years has been the rise of China— economically, technologically, politically, and militarily. The question on people's minds for decades has been whether China will replace the United States as a superpower in the near future. But for China, this power must be comprehensive — having strong economic and militant forces are only two pieces of the puzzle. China must also possess soft power, such as attractive ideologies, values, and culture. China as Number One? explores China’s soft powers through the eyes of Chinese citizens. Utilizing data from the World Values Survey, the contributors to this collection analyze the potential soft power of a rising China by examining its residents' social values. A comprehensive study of changes and continuities in the political and social values of Chinese citizens, the book examines findings in the context of evolutionary modernization theory and cross-national comparison.

Notes: High performance biosensors are urgently needed from medical diagnosis, to foodsafety/security, to the war on bio-terrorist. Recently, magnetostrictive microcantilever (MSMC) andmagnetostrictive particle (MSP) have been developed as high performance biosensor platform. BothMSMC and MSP are wireless sensors and exhibit advantages over current acoustic wave biosensorplatforms. Theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that micro/nano scale MSMC andMSP have ultra-high sensitivities. However, in real detection, there is a challenge faces allmicro/nano scale sensors because of their small size. That is, a long time is required for the tinysensors to react with the target species. Due to the magnetic and wireless nature, MSP provides aunique way to bring the nanosensors to target species. The fabrication of bar-like MSPs in nanoscaleis reported. Amorphous Fe-B alloy was selected as target magnetostrictive materials for fabrication. The properties of these nanobars were determined. The morphology and magnetic properties of thenanobars were characterized. The results ware analyzed and the size effect on the microstructure andproperties is discussed

Notes: The investigation of dipole relaxation processes in nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers containing chromophore dipoles with large hyperpolarizabilities is important for optimizing the poling process and for predicting the long-term stability of the poling-induced order. The primary or α relaxation is difficult to assess by dielectric spectroscopy in polymers with high glass transition temperature due to thermally induced chromophore degradation. A fast experimental procedure is developed for the investigation of dielectric relaxation processes in NLO polymers, without severely inducing chromophore degradation. The procedure is based on the measurement of the dielectric function cursive-epsilon˜(T)=cursive-epsilon′(T)−icursive-epsilon″(T) at a few frequencies from 30 Hz to 30 kHz, while heating the polymer at a constant rate. The complex plane representation of the temperature-dependent dielectric function is used to determine the distribution of relaxation times, while the temperature-dependent mean relaxation time τα(t) is numerically determined from the dielectric loss cursive-epsilon″(T). With only three decades in frequency, information on five decades in time or 90 K in temperature is gained above the glass transition temperature. The strong α and the weak β relaxation below the glass transition are separately investigated by thermally stimulated depolarization after a suitable two-step poling procedure. The method has been applied to a typical polyimidelike side-chain nonlinear optical polymer with modified Disperse Red 1 chromophores. Even below room temperature, a γ-relaxation process is observed, demonstrating significant mobility of the chromophores much below the glass transition. From the results of thermally stimulated depolarization it is concluded that the initial fast decay of the electro-optical response to a temporally stable value is related to the partial depolarization caused by the β relaxation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] The Shangsi P/Tr layer is located in a road section 1 km from the town of Shangsi. This section has been extensively investigated, so that stratigraphical sequences of the Permian and Triassic are clear. However, opinions differ as to the demarcation of the P/Tr boundary; most hold that the ...

Notes: An electrical conducting copper coating on the glass substrate is deposited by means ofwire exploding spray coating (WESC). The coating system basically consists of a high voltage pulsedpower supply and a coating chamber. A pulsed voltage is produced by the power supply upon themetal wire in the coating chamber. The whole process is under taken at atmosphere pressure and roomtemperature. The coating is more uniform when a higher discharging voltage is applied, which meansmore energy is deposited into the copper wire in the identical time, so the wire will be destructed moreefficiently. A 20 kV discharging voltage is applied in this paper for the balance of coating quality andharmless to the glass substrate. The coating samples are analyzed by a series of tests. The SEM photograph shows that the copperparticles penetrate deeply into the glass substrate, which results in a strong adhesion of the coating, and the thickness of the coating is about 400 to 500 μm after sprayed three times. The electricalconductivity of the copper coating is about 1.837*104 1-1·m-1 tested by a Kelvin electric bridge, andthe 50 Hz withstand voltage of the glass tube before and after the spray coating is about 40 kV and 38kV, respectively, with no obvious decrease

Notes: Abstract The phylogenetic relationships within the genus Actinidia and among 3 allied genera Clematoclethra, Saurauia, and Sladenia have been very controversial. In order to understand the systematic implication of foliar trichomes in those genera, the micromorphological characteristics of foliar trichomes from 34 taxa were examined by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The observed micromorphological characteristics were classified into eight main types. A phylogenetic analysis of Actinidia and related genera based on 15 micromorphological characters of foliar trichomes was conducted using Wagner parsimony method and Sladenia celastrifolia, Rhododendron hybridum and R. simsii as a complex outgroup. In the resulting phylogenetic tree, Actinidia is shown to be a monophyletic group, and Clematoclethra and Saurauia form another monophyletic group. This study also presents the phylogenetic relationships among 4 sections within the genus Actinidia: the monophyly of sect. Leiocarpae and of sect. Strigosae, and polyphyly of sect. Maculatae and of sect. Stellatae.

Notes: Abstract The perturbation method is one of the effective methods for solving problems in nonlinear continuum mechanics. It has been developed on the basis of the linear analytical solutions for the original problems. If a simple analytical solution cannot be obtained, we would encounter difficulties in applying this method to solving certain complicated nonlinear problems. The finite element method appears to be in its turn a very useful means for solving nonlinear problems, but generally it takes too much time in computation. In the present paper a mixed approach, namely, the perturbation finite element method, is introduced, which incorporates the advantages of the two above-mentioned methods and enables us to solve more complicated nonlinear problems with great saving in computing time. Problems in the elastoplastic region have been discussed and a numerical solution for a plate with a central hole under tension is given in this paper.
