Notes: Ferroelectric Ba(SnxTi1−x)O3 (BTS) thin films were deposited using a sol–gel process on LaNiO3-coated silicon substrates. The films showed a (100) preferred orientation depending on composition. The grain size decreased and the microstructure became denser with increasing tin content. The decreasing grain size with increasing tin may be attributable to lower grain-growth rates from the more slowly diffusing Sn4+ ion, which has a larger ionic radius than Ti4+. The ferroelectric phase transition temperature of Ba(SnxTi1−x)O3 thin films with (a) x= 0, (b) x= 0.05, (c) x= 0.10, and (d) x= 0.15 occurs at about 150°, 45°, 28°, and 20°C, respectively. The highest K (figure of merit defined as K= tunability/tan δ={[ɛ(0) −ɛ(E)]/ɛ(E)}/tan δ) was found for BTS thin films with x= 0.10, even though tunability was highest with x= 0.05. An increase of dielectric loss as compared with films with x= 0.10 produced a decrease in K value. The J–E characteristics were highly nonlinear and the electric field resulting in nonlinearity moved to lower electric fields with decreasing tin content.

Notes: Compositionally step-varied (Pb, Ca)TiO3 thin films were prepared on platinum-coated silicon substrates by a monoethanolamine-modified sol-gel technique. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor were found to be 342 and 0.019, respectively, for thin films of 0.6μm in thickness annealed at 550 °C for 60 min. The remanent polarization and coercive field were 37.7 μC/cm2 and 60.4 kV/cm, respectively. The leakage current was 1.31×10−7 A/cm2 at the voltage of 5 V. The compositionally step-varied (Pb, Ca)TiO3 thin films had enhanced dielectric and ferroelectric properties which were suitable for various device applications. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Compositionally graded (Pb, Ca)TiO3 thin films were prepared on platinum-coated silicon substrates by a monoethanolamine-modified sol–gel technique. The crystalline orientation and surface morphology of the graded films were related to the deposition sequence of the film layer. The dielectric constants, for up-graded and down-graded films annealed at 600 °C for 60 min were found to be 504 and 399, respectively. Both were larger than those reported for conventional (Pb, Ca)TiO3 thin films. The compositionally graded films had large polarization offsets in hysteresis loops when driven by an alternating electric field. The magnitude of polarization offsets displayed a power-law dependence on the electric field, and the direction of the offsets depended on the direction of the composition gradient with respect to the substrate. The offset, 120 μC/cm2 at 300 kV/cm driving electric field, was obtained. These results showed that compositionally graded (Pb, Ca)TiO3 thin films had enhanced dielectric properties and abnormal ferroelectric properties which can be used in various microelectronic devices. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The region of the (0.9-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.1BaTiO3-xPbTiO3 (0.0≤x≤0.2) phase diagram was established through analysis of the structure and dielectric behavior associated with changes in temperature and composition. The zero-field spontaneous and field-induced relaxor-normal ferroelectric transitions are reported in this ferroelectric system, and this transition corresponds to the rhombohedral-tetragonal first-order phase switching. From careful measurement of the hystersis loop, it is suggested that the microscopic mechanism of spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric microregion was further correlated with the phase structure. Thus, the thermal hysteresis of micro–macrodomain transition of relaxor ferroelectrics can be explained very well. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Lanthanum doped lead titanate (PLT) thin films with good surface morphology and perovskite structure were fabricated by the metalo-organic decomposition process. Their nonlinear optical property was investigated by Z-scan technique. PLT30 thin films on the quartz substrate display strong nonlinear optical effects. A nonlinear refractive index as high as 3.0×10−7 esu was obtained for the thin film. All the results show that PLT ferroelectric thin films are promising materials for nonlinear optics. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Mg-ion indiffusion process was applied to the lithium niobate single-crystal substrates deposited with magnesium oxide thin film. By means of x-ray diffraction analysis and differential thermal analysis, we find that the magnesium diffused layer exhibits the crystal structure of an unknown compound of the Mg-Li-Nb-O ternary system. It is proposed, that this unknown compound and MgNb2O6 are the real sources for the Mg-ion indiffusion. The changes in Curie temperature with diffusion parameters such as diffusion temperature, diffusion times, and the thickness of magnesium oxide film are noted. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Cubic-pyrochlore-structure α-phase and low-symmetry-structure ß-phase are the basic phases of dielectric ceramics that are based on Bi2O3-ZnO-Nb2O5 (BZN). In this paper, the melting behaviors of the α-phase and the ß-phase have been explored using differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffractometry. The results show that BZN-based α-phase is a congruent compound; its congruent melting point is 1190°C. BZN-based ß-phase is an incongruent compound that dissociates to form α-phase and a liquid phase, with an absorption of heat, at its incongruent melting point (peritectic temperature) of 1100°C. Upon cooling, the α-phase reacts with the liquid phase to form the ß-phase via peritectic reaction. Upon quenching, the BZN-based cubic-fluorite phase precipitates from the liquid phase.

Notes: Lead titanate and lead zirconate titanate grains were grown in situfrom lead-titanium-boron-silicon and lead-zirconium-titanium-boron-silicon gels prepared via the sol-gel method. The lead zirconate titanate grains were much smaller and more uniform than lead titanate grains grown from gels of similar composition. The crystallization mechanisms of the two systems were studied via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis. Crystallization had a tendency to begin near the surface or at defects in the lead titanate system, whereas it was controlled by the original precipitated nuclei of tetragonal zirconia particles in the lead zirconate titanate system. Controlled bulk crystallization may explain the finer structure of the resultant lead zirconate titanate glass-ceramic.

Notes: A magnesium ion indiffusion process is applied to lithium niobate single–crystal fibers. Electron probe microanalysis shows that magnesium ions have diffused into the bulk of the crystal fibers and the magnesium ion concentration in the magnesium–diffused layer has an approximately parabolic profile, which corresponds to that of theoretical simulation. It is shown by conventional X–ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy that a good starting single crystal of the magnesium–diffused crystal fiber can be preserved by controlling suitable diffusion parameters such as diffusion temperature, diffusion time, and MgO film thickness, etc., to ensure the completeness of magnesium ion indiffusion, but the magnesium–diffused region etches differently from virgin-region crystals.

Notes: Abstract Homogeneous Ba–Ti–B–Si, Ba–Ti–Al–Si and Ba–Ti–B gels have been successfully prepared by the sol–gel process. A novel method is presented for fabricating barium titanate glass-ceramics by sintering the gel powders with small barium titanate crystallites. The structural development, grain size, crystallization process and dielectric properties were systematically studied by differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction techniques, scanning electron microscopy and dielectric measurements. The glass-ceramic samples were sintered at lower temperatures compared to the barium titanate ceramic sintering, and showed improved dielectric properties. It was found that the small size effect of the barium titanate grains on the dielectric constant in the glass-ceramics was quite evident. Ferroelectric hysteresis loop analyses were also performed to manifest the ferroelectric nature of the barium titanate grains in situ grown from the gels.
