    Notes: Abstract Polymorphisms and haplotypes at the adjacent apolipoprotein (apo) AI and CIII gene loci were investigated in 61 Japanese patients with triglycerides greater than 350 mg/dl and in 66 unrelated normolipidemic subjects. The polymorphic sites were the SstI site in the apoCIII 3′ untranslated region, whose presence has previously been shown to be associated with hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) in Caucasians, and the MspI site in the third intron of the apoAI gene. The frequencies of the SstI minor allele (S2) were 0.48 in HTG patients and 0.25 in normolipidemic subjects (P 〈 0.00015). The frequencies of the MspI minor allele (M2) were 0.61 in HTG patients and 0.33 in normolipidemic subjects (P 〈 0.00001). The two polymorphic sites were in strong linkage disequilibrium, and maximum likelihood analysis supported the existence of three of the four possible haplotypes: S1-M1, S1-M2, and S2-M2. Since all S2 alleles were estimated to be present on M2-bearing chromosomes, the HTG-associated S2-M2 haplotype conferred the same approximate relative risk as the S2 allele alone when compared with the other two haplotypes (odds ratio 2.8). This study demonstrates that the S2 allele is a marker for HTG among west Japanese subjects as well as among Caucasians. The results suggest that S2-M2 chromosomes carry HTG susceptibility sequences that predate the separation of the Asian and Caucasian races.

    Notes: This paper aims to study the uncertainty of the MDOF structural dynamic response, takingnot only the interval characteristics of structural physical parameters and geometric dimension, butalso the interval characteristics of applied load simultaneously . By means of the description of theinterval parameters of uncertain structure with affine forms, the interval structural dynamic equationis studied, and an improved affine arithmetic based on interval division is presented, wherecorrelations between the interval elements in eigenvalue and responses equations are considered,independent uncertain parameters are transformed to affine forms, and the solution of eigenvalue andresponse equations are transformed into the corresponding certain ones. With general affinearithmetic, the eigenvalue of each order and response bounds are determined by searching for themaximum and minimum in the solutions. Finally, some mathematical examples and a furtherengineering application confirm the feasibility and validity of this approach

    Notes: Polymer nanocomposites are recognized as the next generation of polymer compositesdue to their exceptional properties. Understanding the molecular origin of the reinforcementmechanism is crucial to the development of such promising materials. This paper reports our recentmolecular dynamic study on clay-based polyurethane nanocomposites. The effect of clay plateletson phase separation behavior of polyurethane, at the clay-polyurethane interface, is quantified interms of molecular interactions, structure and dynamics. The results show that the nanoconfinementof polyurethane chains in clay gallery impedes the development of phase separationcommonly observed in bulk polyurethane. The absence of phase separation of intercalatedpolyurethane is believed to be related to the competitive interactions among clay platelet,polyurethane and surfactant

    Notes: N-carboxyethyl chitosan (ACS) was formed by a Micheal reaction. Through the analysisof IR and 1H-NMR spectra, the Micheal reaction was carried out between - NH2 of chitosan and - C= C - of acrylic acid. ACS hydrogel (ACSG) was prepared by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde.ACSG show pH-sensitive swelling behavior, and the smallest swelling rate (SR) of ACSG is in pH5.0buffer solution.With dosage of glutaraldehyde increasing, the SR of ACSG decreased. With graftingdegree (GD) increasing, the SR of ACSG increased first and decreased afterward. Using bovineserum albumin (BSA) as a model medicine, the releasing behaviors of ACSG were investigated invitro. In simulated gastric and intestinal fluid, the ACSG loading BSA (GD=20.45%) has betterreleasing behaviors

    Notes: The influence of different cooling techniques and storage temperatures (-1.5 °C or 1.5 °C) to prolong the shelf life of shrimp was evaluated by sensory analysis, physical methods, chemical analysis, and microbial analysis. Storage in liquid ice was more effective than flake ice or brine mixed with flake ice in delaying spoilage of the shrimp by slowing down microbial growth and formation of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and trimethylamine (TMA). Total viable counts (TVC) showed that bacteria grew most quickly in shrimp stored in flake ice and in brine mixed with flake ice, followed by those in liquid ice at 1.5 °C and -1.5 °C, respectively. Lowest counts were observed in shrimp stored in liquid ice at -1.5 °C where the lag phase of growth was apparently extended at the beginning of storage. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed a good correlation between quality indicators related to microbial growth, TVC, pH, TVB-N, TMA, responses of an electronic nose and sensory evaluation.

    Notes: Fungi exist in every indoor and outdoor environment. Many fungi are toxigenic or pathogens that may cause various public health concerns. Rapid and accurate detection and identification of fungi require specific markers. In this study, partial mitochondrial large subunit rDNA was amplified and sequenced from 32 fungal strains representing 31 species from 14 genera. Based on the sequence variation pattern, 26 oligonucleotide probes were designed for their discrimination. The specificity of the probes was evaluated through homology search against GenBank database and hybridization examination on 38 fungal strains. The 26 probes were verified as highly specific to 20 fungal species. A two-step detection procedure through PCR followed by probe hybridization gave ten-fold increase in detection sensitivity than single-step PCR assay and would be a practical approach for environmental sample screening. The probes developed in this study can be applied in clinical diagnosis and environmental monitoring of fungal agents.

    Notes: Based on the analysis of reinforced concrete beams under biaxial bending, an equivalent cross-section method is proposed to calculate the shear capacity of the beams. According to the two basic equivalence principles, a biaxial flexural beam is changed into a uniaxial flexural member, and the shear strength of biaxial flexural beam is calculated as a uniaxial flexural member. Furthermore, the interrelationships among the equivalent cross-section and the neutral axis inclination as well as the ratio of depth to width of the cross-section are deduced in advance. The ratios of some typical cross-section’s equivalent dimensions to its original ones are pointed also. In order to verify the availability of the equivalent cross-section method, some academic references about the ultimate strength of biaxial flexural beams are consulted in this paper, and the shear capacity computing methods by literatures for uniaxial flexural beams are adopted in the strength calculation of biaxial flexural reinforced concrete simply supported beams with stirrups or without stirrups. The comparison between the calculation results and experimental results shows that the presented equivalent cross-section method is feasible and practical which can be used as a reference in practice design
