    Notes: Summary This paper addresses the question of whether abnormalities in ferritin expression in the iron storage disease hemochromatosis (HC) involve major deletions or alterations in regions containing the two ferritin H genes that lie near the disease locus on chromosome 6p. We present evidence from analyses of Southern blots that neither gene is deleted in hemochromatosis. We also describe a polymorphism in one of the genes that we have previously shown to be a processed pseudogene. This polymorphism does not correlate with the presence of HC. The PIC value for this polymorphism was calculated as 0.49.

    Notes: The interaction of H2 with Fe(111) has been studied by thermal energy atom scattering (TEAS). The specularly scattered He intensity as a function of hydrogen coverage exhibits a concave drop in scattered He intensity up to 30% coverage, followed by a plateau and another drop in intensity at 80% coverage. A model has been developed to account for this data which assumes three adsorption sites for H on Fe(111), in analogy with the three desorption peaks seen in temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The adsorption sites have not been definitely assigned, but are labeled "deep–hollow,'' "shallow–hollow,'' and "on-top.'' Competitive adsorption into the deep-hollow and shallow-hollow sites is assumed to account for the initial concavity of the data. Adsorption into on-top sites only becomes significant at 80% coverage. Effective cross sections and reflectivities for the three sites have been obtained for θi=60° and 40°. When a H saturated surface is heated, the scattered He intensity decreases upon heating from 173 to 240 K, at which point desorption has already begun. This drop in intensity is not completely explicable by a Debye–Waller attenuation. It is proposed to be due to a shift in population of the adsorbed H to more exposed, on-top sites, in accord with a Boltzmann distribution of adsorption sites. The scattered He intensity increases upon further heating from 240 to 400 K, corresponding to the desorption of recombined H2 from the surface. Comparison of the He/H/Fe(111) system is made with the He/H/Pt(111) and He/H/Fe(110) systems.

    Notes: The interaction of CO with Fe(111) has been studied by thermal energy atom scattering (TEAS) at surface temperatures of 250 and 400 K. The behavior of He scattering from both the clean and CO covered Fe(111) surface is different from that on smooth, close-packed surfaces such as Pt(111). Although the specular He intensity from the CO covered surface is not negligible, as it is on smooth surfaces, CO is seen to be a perfectly diffuse scatterer. A model to describe the scattering intensity as a function of CO coverage was developed which takes into account the He intensity scattered from the clean surface and the intensity scattered from the CO covered surface, with no interference effects. Effective cross sections of 56 A(ring)2 for He scattering from molecular CO and 93 A(ring)2 per molecule for He scattering from dissociated CO were obtained. Comparison of the He/CO/Fe(111) system is made with He/CO/Pt(111) and He/H/Pt(111) systems and clear differences are seen. As the temperature of the CO covered surface is increased there are two increases in scattered He intensity at ∼360 and 750 K, corresponding to the desorption of molecular and recombined CO, respectively. This study suggests that, although the interpretation of the data is more complicated than for smooth surfaces, TEAS is a viable technique for application to studies of adsorption on more corrugated surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract: Bacteriophage P4 autonomous replication may result in the lytic cycle or in plasmid maintenance, depending, respectively, on the presence or absence of the helper phage P2 genome in the Escherichia coli host cell. Alternatively, P4 may lysogenize the bacterial host and be maintained in an immune-integrated condition. A key step in the choice between the lytic / plasmid vs. the lysogenic condition is the regulation of P4 α operon. This operon may be transcribed from two promoters, PLE and PLL, and encodes both immunity (promoter proximal) and replication (promoter distal) functions. PLE is a constitutive promoter and transcription of the downstream replication genes is regulated by transcription termination. The trans-acting immunity factor that controls premature transcription termination is a short RNA encoded in the PLE proximal part of the operon. Expression of the replication functions in the lytic/plasmid condition is achieved by activation of the PLL promoter. Transcription from PLL is insensitive to the termination mechanism that acts on transcription starting from PLE. PLL is also negatively regulated by P4 orf88, the first gene downstream of PLL. An additional control on P4 DNA replication is exerted by the P4 cnr gene product.

    Notes: Abstract In order to determine the seismic properties of rocks representing the continental crust/upper mantle transition, a structural and petrographical study of peridotites of the Ivrea-Verbano zone (N. Italy) has been undertaken. The seismic behaviour (Vp, Vs, birefringence, orientation of the fast shear-wave polarisation plane) has been calculated from the modal composition of rock samples, together with the crystallographic preferred orientation and the single crystal elastic constants, using the methods of Mainprice (1990). It is shown that the intrinsic anisotropy of peridotites is mainly due to the lattice preferred orientation (LPO) of olivine and to the competing effects due to the LPO of orthopyroxene. If present, well-oriented hydrous phases such as phlogopite, leads to both P- and S-waves velocities becoming drastically reduced, but the anisotropy and the S-wave splitting (mainly on the foliation plane) is increased. An attempt has been made to apply this petrologic and microstructural approach to understand the seismic properties of ultramafic rocks with the aid of a mobile seismic network set up in the Ivrea-Verbano zone. Five recording units with 3-component geophones were installed on the most representative lithologies of the Ivrea-Verbano zone: kinzigites, gabbros, stronalites, and on metapelites of the adjacent outcrop of the Serie dei Laghi. During five months the seismic network recorded 49 events that were mainly regional earthquakes. The preliminary analysis of the first arrival revealed a high-velocity anomaly near the Finero ultramafic massif. Rough calculations indicated that this anomaly could be due to a shallow-depth, peridotitic body about six kilometres thick. S-wave polarisation analysis was carried out on the horizontal components of the seismograms of four regional earthquakes that showed a first arrival propagating almost vertically at the recording sites. Four earthquakes were chosen in order to reconstruct the orientation of the polarisation plane of the shear phases. The preliminary results of this analysis have shown a qualitatively good agreement between the orientation of the polarisation plane of the fast shear-wave and the strike of the foliation at the station near Finero, located on kinzigites of the Ivrea-Verbano zone, although the relationships between the local structural setting and the polarisation orientations at the other recording sites is not yet so clear.

    Notes: Summary The authors studied the H ferritin restriction polymorphism in 83 hemochromatosis patients and 84 controls as well as in 19 nuclear families. No significant difference was found with the ten restriction enzymes used (HindIII, EcoRI, EcoRV, PvuII, BamHI, PstI, BglI, BglII, HincII, and TaqI). Hence, the genomic abnormality responsible for idiopathic hemochromatosis is not a major deletion of an H ferritin gene. A higher frequency of one HindIII fragment, although nonsignificant when the number of comparisons made is taken into account, was observed in the patients. This HindIII fragment hybridizes with the H ferritin probe and with a 28 S ribosomal probe, and its segregation with HLA haplotypes (hence its assignment to chromosome 6) is uncertain. Its possible meaning in the expression of the disease is discussed.
