    Description: Methanol, which contains 12.6 weight percent hydrogen, is a good hydrogen storage medium because it is a liquid at room temperature. However, by releasing the hydrogen, undesirable CO and/or CO 2 byproducts are formed during catalytic fuel reforming. We show that alkaline earth metal oxides, in our case MgO nanocrystals, exhibit stable photocatalytic activity for CO/CO 2 -free H 2 production from liquid methanol at room temperature. The performance of MgO nanocrystals toward methanol dehydrogenation increases with time and approaches ~320 μmol g –1 hour –1 after a 2-day photocatalytic reaction. The CO x -free H 2 production is attributed to methanol photodecomposition to formaldehyde, photocatalyzed by surface electronic states of unique monodispersed, porous MgO nanocrystals, which were synthesized with a novel facile colloidal chemical strategy. An oxygen plasma treatment allows for the removal of organic surfactants, producing MgO nanocrystals that are well dispersible in methanol.

    Description: Cu-Al-Zn alloys with different stacking fault energy (SFE) were processed by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) at cryogenic temperature (CT), mechanical properties of gradient structured Cu-Al-Zn alloys were investigated in this study. Al and Zn content in alloys, which result in the decrease of SFE, can contribute to the increase in strength. Cu-4.5wt%Al-14.3wt%Zn alloy with the lower SFE shows that the strength increased, the ductility did not decrease significantly with increasing processing time, and the strength can be improved by a thicker gradient structure (GS) layer. The better combination of strength and ductility was achieved in Cu-4.5wt%Al-14.3wt%Zn alloy with lower SFE.

    Description: Outlier detection is an integral component of statistical modelling and estimation. For high-dimensional data, classical methods based on the Mahalanobis distance are usually not applicable. We propose an outlier detection procedure that replaces the classical minimum covariance determinant estimator with a high-breakdown minimum diagonal product estimator. The cut-off value is obtained from the asymptotic distribution of the distance, which enables us to control the Type I error and deliver robust outlier detection. Simulation studies show that the proposed method behaves well for high-dimensional data.

    Description: We present a newly designed compact grating spectrometer for the energy range from 210 eV to 1250 eV, which would include the Kα 1,2 emission lines of vital elements like C, N, and O. The spectrometer is based on a grazing incidence spherical varied line spacing grating with 2400 l/mm at its center and a radius of curvature of 58 542 mm. First, results show a resolving power of around 1000 at an energy of 550 eV and a working spectrometer for high vacuum (10 −4 mbar) environment without losing photon intensity.

    Description: This work develops models and numerical methods for controlled regime-switching systems that stem from a mean-variance formulation. Distinct from the prior treatments, the switching process is a hidden Markov chain. Assuming a noisy observation of switching process corrupted by white noise is available, we focus on minimizing the variance subject to a fixed terminal expectation. Using the Wonham filter, we convert the partially observable system to a completely observable one first. Because closed-form solutions are virtually impossible to obtain, our main effort is devoted to designing a numerical algorithm. Convergence of the algorithm is obtained. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the results.

    Description: The Pearl River is the largest river in southern China; it has eight outlets flowing into the South China Sea, four of which (Humen, Jiaomen, Hongqili and Hengmen) empty via Lingdingyang Bay. Tides, discharge strength and the presence of islands control sediments within these four outlets. Sediments are deposited, and form three shoals and two channels. The shoreline and its seabed topography have changed dramatically with increasing human impact. In order to understand the geomorphological evolution of Lingdingyang Bay and its hydrodynamics, we integrated data obtained from two marine environment investigations conducted by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS) in 2003 and in 2012, together with remote sensing multi-temporal images and historical materials, and analysed them using a geographical information system (GIS). The results obtained show that the outlets are becoming narrower; the surface water area of Lingdingyang Bay is diminishing. Meanwhile, the sediment flux is reducing and becoming finer grained because the currents are being blocked by shoals and islands. Some parts of the bay are becoming deeper (27–37 m in the Chuanbi Channel). Correspondingly, the hydrodynamics in the bay are becoming weaker and sediments easier to deposit. Water exchange between the inner and outer sea is decreasing under the influence of unrestricted anthropogenic activities. Lingdingyang Bay should be managed and protected continuously based on a scientific framework: otherwise, it will become narrower and, perhaps, even evolving eventually into a river, which may result in serious futures disasters through flooding and tides.

    Description: Stratum quality factors ( P -wave and S -wave quality factors, Q p and Q s ) have gradually been utilized in the study of physical state of crust and uppermost mantle, tectonic evolution, hydrogeololgy, gas hydrates, petroleum exploration, etc. Different opinions of the seismic attenuation mechanism result in various approaches to estimate the P -wave and S -wave quality factors. Considering the viscoelasticity of the underground medium, the constitutive matrix of the Earth medium is written as the superposition of homogeneous background medium, elastic perturbation medium and viscoelastic perturbation medium. Under the hypothesis of Born integral and stationary phase approximation, the seismic reflectivity is initially raised in terms of P -wave and S -wave moduli, density, P -wave and S -wave quality factors. Furthermore, incorporating the complex seismic traces with the seismic wavelets at different offsets, a two-step inversion approach is proposed to estimate the P -wave and S -wave quality factors. The AVO/AVA Bayesian inversion approach is suggested to estimate the P -wave modulus and S -wave modulus with the real component of the pre-stack seismic data initially. Taking the estimated P -wave and S -wave moduli as prior information, the P -wave and S -wave quality factors are further estimated with the imaginary component of the complex pre-stack seismic data, which is the quadrature of the original data. Finally, synthetic examples demonstrate that the proposed approach is able to estimate P -wave and S -wave quality factors stably and properly, and two field data examples demonstrate that the proposed approach may work as an efficient approach to fluid identification.

    Description: Although misfolded proteins are ubiquitinated and cleared by the proteasome, they can accumulate in synapses in aged neurons to promote synaptic dysfunction in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, including Huntington's disease (HD), which is caused by polyglutamine expansion in huntingtin. The mechanism behind this aging-related phenomenon is unknown and has been difficult to investigate using animals with short life spans. With brain tissues from longer-lived rhesus monkeys of different ages, we found that aging reduces ubiquitin-proteasomal activity and also increases the level of ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme UBE2N (Ubc13) in synaptosomes. Synaptosomal fractions from aged monkey brain increase in vitro ubiquitinated huntingtin, whereas depletion of UBE2N markedly reduces this increase. Overexpressing UBE2N increases the aggregation of mutant huntingtin, and reducing UBE2N attenuates huntingtin aggregation in cellular and mouse models of HD. Our studies suggest that increased UBE2N plays a critical role in the synaptosomal accumulation of mutant huntingtin with age.
