Notes: In this paper, homogeneous and well-crystallized LiFePO4 was synthesized by a novelmodified solid-state reaction method following by heat treatment at relatively low temperature of 500°Cin Ar. No impurities are detected in the XRD patterns. The initial charge specific capacity and dischargespecific capacity reach 157.2mAhg-1 and 152.6mAhg-1 respectively at 20°C. Voltage plateaus at around3.45V were observed in all the curves, indicating that the charge and discharge reaction proceeds as atwo-phase reaction. The initial charge specific capacity is 157.2mAhg-1 at 0.1C rate, i.e. 92% of thetheoretical capacity, and specific capacity decreases slightly after 100 circles at room temperature

Notes: Based on an extended effective-medium approach model, we investigate the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems of spherical or cylindrical ferromagnetic granular films, and give an analytical expression for the giant magnetoresistance of these systems. Our result is in agreement with the observed dependence of the giant magnetoresistance on size and volume fraction of the ferromagnetic granules. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: (Pb0.97La0.03)(Zr0.66Ti0.34)0.9875O3, PLZT, thin films deposited on either LaNiO3 (LNO) or LNO/Pt coated Si3N4/Si substrates, possessing good ferroelectric properties, were successfully obtained by the pulsed laser deposition process. Using LNO/Pt as double layer electrodes not only resulted in PLZT films with superior electric properties, but also of better handling endurance. The former is attributed to the low surface resistivity of electrode materials (i.e., ρLNO/Pt=0.5 mΩ cm) due to the bypassing effect of the Pt layer, whereas the latter is ascribed to the induction of compressive stress on PLZT and LNO layers due to a relatively larger thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of the Pt layer. The ferroelectric properties of (PLZT )LNO/pt films were Pr=16.5 μC/cm2 and Ec=63.5 kV/cm, while the dielectric constant and leakage current were K=1.028 and Je≤8×10−6 A/cm2 (under 150 kV/cm), respectively. Their fatigue life was longer than 2×109cycles under action of 300 kV/cm pulse. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In the present study, a total of 142 trees sampled from five populations of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) in Alberta was analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with five random oligonucleotide primers. Null-allele frequencies of 28 putative RAPD loci were estimated using the given departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (F IS) previously estimated with isozyme markers for the same population. Nucleotide divergence between populations was then estimated in a fashion similar to restriction-fragment data, but considering the dominance of the RAPDs. The average of nucleotide divergence between populations was in the order of 0.0005 and nucleotide divergence were found to be highly correlated with geographic distance. The results suggest that isolation by distance may be an important factor in the genetic differentiation of trembling aspen.

Notes: The traditional differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques are employed to evaluatethe kinetic behavior induced by the inter-particle relationships in a nano-particle θ-Al2O3 powdersystem during θ- to α- phase transformation. Discrepancies in homogeneity and inter-particledistance of the powder system may result in the diagnostic DTA profiles which can be use toevaluate the characteristics of the powder system as well as the formed α-Al2O3 particles. Based onthe acknowledgement, a quasi-homogeneous transformation shows that a duration of 90 seconds isneeded for one θ-crystallite to transform into one α-nucleus with a heating rate of 10 oC min-1 andfabrication of the high phase-pure and mono-sized α-Al2O3 powders is obtained

Notes: Summary The effects of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) on bone growth were investigated in rats. Daily injection of PGE2 (1, 10, and 100 pmol) was given via local intraosseous route into the metaphysis of the left tibia for 14 days. The contralateral right tibia injected with vehicle and saline was for the control. The rats receiving no injection provided as normal control. The results obtained indicated that PGE2 slightly but significantly decreased the body weight increment without effect on tibial length. The most prominent effect of PGE2 was the increase of metaphyseal bone trabeculae by 45–81% in a dose-dependent manner. The microscopic examination revealed that PGE2 unequivocally increased the new woven bone formation. The bone cell population study showed no difference between the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in primary spongiosa of the PGE2-injected limbs and those of contralateral limbs. However, the numbers of osteoblasts and osteoclasts were markedly increased in secondary spongiosa in the PGE2-injected limbs. This finding confirmed a stimulatory role of PGE2 in the bone formation. The local intraosseous injection of PGE2 was proven to be a good model for the study of local growth factors on bone metabolism with a lower effective dose which eliminates the systemic side effects.

Notes: A co-rotational finite element formulation for the dynamic analysis of planar Euler beam is presented. Both the internal nodal forces due to deformation and the inertia nodal forces are systematically derived by consistent linearization of the fully geometrically non-linear beam theory using the d'Alembert principle and the virtual work principle. Due to the consideration of the exact kinematics of Euler beam, some velocity coupling terms are obtained in the inertia nodal forces. An incremental-iterative method based on the Newmark direct integration method and the Newton-Raphson method is employed here for the solution of the non-linear dynamic equilibrium equations. Numerical examples are presented to investigate the effect of the velocity coupling terms on the dynamic response of the beam structures.

Notes: A series of novel perfluorononenyloxy group containing polyarylates were synthesized by a high-temperature solution condensation of 5-(perfluorononenyloxy)-isophthaloyl chloride (II) with various aromatic diols in o-dichlorobenzene. All the polyarylates were amorphous and readily soluble in many organic solvents such as o-chlorophenol, o-dichlorobenzene, chloroform, and polar aprotic solvents at room temperature or on heating. Transparent, tough, and flexible films of these polymers could be cast from the o-chlorophenol solutions. The polymers having inherent viscosity of 0.61-1.63 dL/g were obtained in quantitative yields. These polymers were thermally quite stable. The glass transition temperatures of these polyarylates were in the range of 219-242°C by DSC and 224-251°C by DMA, and the 10% weight loss temperatures in nitrogen and air were above 415 and 397°C, respectively. Moreover, these polymers maintained good mechanical properties (G′ ∼ 108 Pa) up to 220°C and had lower moisture absorption than common polyarylates. The dielectric constants of these polymers ranged from 3.23 to 3.75. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 645-653, 1998
