    Description: Proxy blind signature is an important cryptographic primitive and plays an essential role in construction of the electronic cash (e-cash). Recently, Tan (2001, An offline electronic cash scheme based on proxy blind signature. Comput. J. , 54, 505–512) proposed a new proxy blind signature scheme and applied it to electronic cash. The scheme was claimed as being provably secure under the Discrete Log assumption, DBDH assumption and Chosen–Target CDH assumption in the random oracle model. In this paper, we show that Tan's proxy blind signature scheme is insecure by demonstrating several attacks in which a malicious original signer can forge both valid proxy signature keys of arbitrary proxy signers and a proxy blind signature on an arbitrary message with respect to any proxy signer directly. We also discuss some weaknesses in the e-cash scheme proposed by Tan.

    Description: Propanethiol solution (0.1 M) in 2-propanol, octanethiol solution (0.1 M) in 2-propanol and 20% (NH 4 ) 2 S solution in water were used to passivate the germanium substrates. HfO 2 thin films of 150 ALD cycles were then deposited on the passivated germanium substrates. The morphology of the thin films was investigated by X-ray diffraction and it was found that the morphology of the thin films was not affected by the chemical treatments. A lower leakage current density was observed in the passivated samples compared with the witness one. In addition, the interface quality and long-time stress reliability of the passivated samples were improved when the samples were annealed in forming gas ambient.

    Description: We investigate a method to construct parametrized progenitor models for core-collapse supernova simulations. Different from all modern core-collapse supernova studies, which rely on progenitor models from stellar evolution calculations, we follow the methodology of Baron & Cooperstein to construct initial models. Choosing parametrized spatial distributions of entropy and electron fraction as a function of mass coordinate and solving the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium, we obtain the initial density structures of our progenitor models. First, we calculate structures with parameters fitting broadly the evolutionary model s11.2 of Woosley et al. ( 2002 ). We then demonstrate the reliability of our method by performing general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations in spherical symmetry with the isotropic diffusion source approximation to solve the neutrino transport. Our comprehensive parameter study shows that initial models with a small central entropy (0.4 k B nucleon –1 ) can explode even in spherically symmetric simulations. Models with a large entropy (6 k B nucleon –1 ) in the Si/O layer have a rather large explosion energy (~4 x 10 50  erg) at the end of the simulations, which is still rapidly increasing.

    Description: A variety of conditions lead to anemia, which affects one-quarter of the world's population. Previous genome-wide association studies revealed a number of genetic polymorphisms significantly associated with plasma iron status. To evaluate the association of genetic variants in genes involved in iron delivery and hepcidin regulation pathways with the risk of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA), the following single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped in 2139 unrelated elderly Chinese women: rs3811647 ( TF ), rs7385804 ( TFR2 ), rs235756 ( BMP2 ), and rs855791(V736A) and rs4820268 ( TMPRSS6, encoding matriptase-2). We identified common variants in TMPRSS6 as being genetic risk factors for both iron deficiency (OR rs855791 = 1.55, P = 4.96 x 10 –8 ) and IDA (OR rs855791 = 1.78, P = 8.43 x 10 –9 ). TMPRSS6 polymorphisms were also associated with lower serum iron (SI) and hemoglobin levels, consistent with their associations to increased iron deficiency and anemia risk. Variants rs3811647 in TF and rs7385804 in TFR2 were associated with reduced SI, serum transferrin and transferrin saturation levels; however, these variants were not associated with iron deficiency or anemia risk. Our findings suggest that TF , TFR2 and TMPRSS6 polymorphisms are significantly associated with decreased iron status, but only variants in TMPRSS6 are genetic risk factors for iron deficiency and IDA.

    Description: Altered miRNA expression is believed to play a crucial role in a variety of human cancers; however, the mechanisms leading to the dysregulation of miRNA expression remain elusive. In this study, we report that the human Y box-binding protein (YB-1), a major mRNA packaging protein, is a novel modulator of miRNA processing in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Using individual nucleotide-resolution crosslinking immunoprecipitation coupled to deep sequencing (iCLIP-seq), we performed the first genome-wide analysis of the in vivo YB-1-RNA interactions and found that YB-1 preferentially recognizes a UYAUC consensus motif and binds to the majority of coding gene transcripts including pre-mRNAs and mature mRNAs. Remarkably, our data show that YB-1 also binds extensively to the terminal loop region of pri-/pre-miR-29b-2 and regulates the biogenesis of miR-29b-2 by blocking the recruitment of microprocessor and Dicer to its precursors. Furthermore, we show that down-regulation of miR-29b by YB-1, which is up-regulated in GBM, is important for cell proliferation. Together, our findings reveal a novel function of YB-1 in regulating non-coding RNA expression, which has important implications in tumorigenesis.

    Description: 〈p〉Generative adversarial learning is one of the most exciting recent breakthroughs in machine learning. It has shown splendid performance in a variety of challenging tasks such as image and video generation. More recently, a quantum version of generative adversarial learning has been theoretically proposed and shown to have the potential of exhibiting an exponential advantage over its classical counterpart. Here, we report the first proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of quantum generative adversarial learning in a superconducting quantum circuit. We demonstrate that, after several rounds of adversarial learning, a quantum-state generator can be trained to replicate the statistics of the quantum data output from a quantum channel simulator, with a high fidelity (98.8% on average) so that the discriminator cannot distinguish between the true and the generated data. Our results pave the way for experimentally exploring the intriguing long-sought-after quantum advantages in machine learning tasks with noisy intermediate–scale quantum devices.〈/p〉

    Description: Long interspersed element 1 (LINE-1 or L1) retrotransposons have markedly affected the human genome. L1s must retrotranspose in the germ line or during early development to ensure their evolutionary success, yet the extent to which this process affects somatic cells is poorly understood. We previously demonstrated that engineered human L1s can retrotranspose in adult rat hippocampus progenitor cells in vitro and in the mouse brain in vivo. Here we demonstrate that neural progenitor cells isolated from human fetal brain and derived from human embryonic stem cells support the retrotransposition of engineered human L1s in vitro. Furthermore, we developed a quantitative multiplex polymerase chain reaction that detected an increase in the copy number of endogenous L1s in the hippocampus, and in several regions of adult human brains, when compared to the copy number of endogenous L1s in heart or liver genomic DNAs from the same donor.
