    Description: Silibinin, an effective anti-cancer and chemopreventive agent in various epithelial cancer models, has been reported to inhibit cancer cell growth through mitogenic signalling pathways including cervical cancer. However, the underlying mechanisms are still not well elucidated. Here, we assessed the effect of silibinin on human cervical carcinoma cell cycle modulation, apoptosis induction and associated molecular alterations by employing HeLa cell line. Silibinin treatment of HeLa cells resulted in a G2 arrest and induced a decrease in cyclin-dependent kinases involved in both G1 and G2 progression. In addition, silibinin showed a dose-dependent and a time-dependent apoptotic death in HeLa cells in both the mitochondrial pathway and the death receptor-mediated pathway, providing a strong rationale for future studies evaluating preventive and/or intervention strategies for silibinin in cervical cancer pre-clinical models.     Description: A scheme in which carbon ion bunches are accelerated to a high energy and density by a laser pulse (∼10 21  W/cm 2 ) irradiating cone targets is proposed and investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. The laser pulse is focused by the cone and drives forward an ultrathin foil located at the cone's tip. In the course of the work, best results were obtained employing target configurations combining a low-Z cone with a multispecies foil transversely shaped to match the laser intensity profile.

    Description: In ad hoc networks, each node is required to forward packets for others. However, based on energy consumption considerations, a node may reject other nodes' forwarding requests to save the limited battery power for its own data transmission. Therefore, a lot of incentive schemes have been proposed to promote the cooperation of the nodes. Most of the existing research work assumes that all the nodes in the network should provide full cooperation in order to optimize the transmission efficiency. However, this assumption is too strict because the activities of the nodes in ad hoc networks have some inherent uncertainty. In this paper, we propose a power control mechanism in ad hoc networks under a dynamic repeated game-theoretic framework. A notion of nodes' evaluation levels for the future experiences is defined to take account of the non-cooperation due to the inherent uncertainty in the ad hoc network nodes' activities. Our scheme does not require all the nodes in the ad hoc network to absolutely cooperate with each other. The simulation results show that, compared with the existing schemes, our power control mechanism considering non-cooperative packet forwarding improves the average transmission efficiency by ~25% and has good scalability.

    Description: Propagation of intense circularly polarized laser pulses in strongly magnetized inhomogeneous plasmas is investigated. It is shown that a left-hand circularly polarized laser pulse propagating up the density gradient of the plasma along the magnetic field is reflected at the left-cutoff density. However, a right-hand circularly polarized laser can penetrate up the density gradient deep into the plasma without cutoff or resonance and turbulently heat the electrons trapped in its wake. Results from particle-in-cell simulations are in good agreement with that from the theory.

    Description: This paper proposes a deMOtion-based, fLash-awARe hybrid storage cache model, named MOLAR, to effectively integrate Flash-based Solid-State Disks (SSDs) into traditional dynamic random access memory (DRAM)-based memory storage systems where SSDs serve as the Tier-2 cache, while DRAM is considered as the Tier-1 cache. We found that conventional cache algorithms designed for DRAM perform poorly in SSDs due to the limited write cycles and asymmetric read/write performance of Flash memory. In MOLAR, a Flash-aware I/O path structure is designed to adapt the asymmetric read and write performance of SSDs and, moreover, to reduce useless write operations. A new control metric, demotion count, is validated to wisely select the evicted blocks from DRAM to reside in the SSD. Besides, for SSD can improve internal data placement from data access hints, the Logical Block Addresses in the SSD are grouped into the long-lived region and the short-lived region self-adaptively via a heuristic control algorithm based on the change of the block demotion count. Through trace-driven simulations, the overall hit ratio in MOLAR outperforms two traditional policies by 1.44–5.34%. The average access latency in SSDs is reduced by 3.5 x to 4.5 x . Moreover, write amplification is effectively reduced by ~36% in two typical Flash address-mapping policies.

    Description: This paper describes a reliability assessment and failure analysis of a poly-Si/non-stoichiometric silicon nitride thin film composite structure. A set of poly-Si/SiN x thin film structures were exposed to a mixed flowing gas (MFG) environment, which simulates outdoor environments, for 90 days, and an elevated temperature and humidity (85 °C/95% R.H.) test for 140 days. The mechanical integrity of the thin films was observed to degrade during exposure to the chemically reactive atmospheres. The degree of degradation was analyzed with nanoindentation tests. Statistical analysis of the forces required to initiate a fracture in the thin films indicated degradation due to the exposure to the MFG environment in the SiN x part of the films. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a porous-like reaction layer on top of SiN x . The morphology of the reaction layer resembled that of galvanically corroded poly-Si. Transmission electron microscopy further clarified the microstructure of the reaction layer which had a complex multi-phase structure extending to depths of ∼100 nm. Furthermore, the layer was oxidized two times deeper in a 90 days MFG-tested sample compared to an untested reference. The formation of the layer is proposed to be caused by galvanic corrosion of elemental silicon in non-stoichiometric silicon nitride during hydrofluoric acid etching. The degradation is proposed to be due uncontrolled oxidation of the films during the stress tests.

    Description: Solid phase extraction (SPE) has been used widely for sample preparation in the analytical process. Many efforts have focused on developing novel adsorbents to enrich and purify the analytes effectively. In this study, poly-3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) nanofiber was prepared and used as the SPE adsorbent. The fiber performed good in extraction of metal ions, Cd, Sn, Hg, Pb, Al, and As, with the extraction recoveries ranged from 53.9% to 99.6% in the wet digested samples of fingernails. A PEDOT namofibers SPE column coupled with ICP-MS was established for assay of elements in fingernails. The levels of elements (Cd, Sn, Hg, Pb, Al, and As) in the fingernails of 77 healthy Chinese children (6-7 and 10-11 years) were determined. Independent t test shows that no significance has been found between boys and girls. On the contrary, there was obvious difference on the levels of most elements between the two grade groups.

    Description: A spectral principal component (SPC) analysis of a sample of 87 Palomar-Green (PG) QSOs at z  〈 0.5 is presented for their mid-infrared spectra from Spitzer Space Telescope. We have derived the first five eigenspectra, which account for 85.2 per cent of the mid-infrared spectral variation. It is found that the first eigenspectrum represents the mid-infrared slope, forbidden emission line strength and 9.7 μm silicate feature; the 3rd and 4th eigenspectra represent the silicate features at 18 and 9.7 μm, respectively. With the principal components (PC) from optical principal component analysis, we find that there is a medium strong correlation between spectral SPC1 and PC2 (accretion rate). It suggests that more nuclear contribution to the near-IR spectrum leads to the change of mid-IR slope. We find mid-IR forbidden lines are suppressed with higher accretion rate. A medium strong correlation between SPC3 and PC1 (Eddington ratio) suggests a connection between the silicate feature at 18 μm and the Eddington ratio. For the ratio of the silicate strength at 9.7 μm to that at 18 μm, we find a strong correlation with PC2 (accretion rate or QSO luminosity). We also find that there is a medium strong correlation between the star formation rate (SFR) and PC2. It implies a correlation between SFR and the central accretion rate in PG QSOs.
