    Description: Industrial development has brought about not only rapid economic growth, but also serious environmental pollution in China, which has led to serious health problems and heavy economic burdens on healthcare. Therefore, the relationship between the industrial air pollution and health care expenditure (HCE) has attracted the attention of researchers, most of which used the traditional empirical methods, such as ordinary least squares (OLS), logistic and so on. By collecting the panel data of 30 provinces of China during 2005–2016, this paper attempts to use the Bayesian quantile regression (BQR) to reveal the impact of industrial air pollution represented by industrial waste gas emission (IWGE) on HCE in high-, middle-, low-income regions. It was found that double heterogeneity in the influence of IWGE on HCE was obvious, which revealed that people in high-, middle-, low-income regions have significantly different understandings of environmental pollution and health problems. In addition, the BQR method provided more information than the traditional empirical methods, which verified that the BQR method, as a new empirical method for previous studies, was applicable in this topic and expanded the discussion space of this research field.

    Description: The exact location of the northern Karakorum fault (KF) in western Tibet is unclear and its current activity is debated. Here, we investigate the possible northern extension of the KF, the Muji fault, located in the Chinese Pamir, which belongs to the Kongur Shan extensional system, and provide the first quantitative estimate of its Holocene slip-rate. The fault cuts and offsets a series of 6 fluvial terraces, yielding a minimum slip-rate of 4.5 ± 0.2 mm/yr, by matching the largest terrace riser offset with its upper surface age (10Be, n = 24). Field evidences of right-lateral movement along the Kongur Shan fault, as well as geometry and kinematic similarities with the southern half of the KF attest that the Muji fault belongs to the KF system. Therefore, its fast slip-rate combined with the slow slip-rates along minor splays of the northern KF (maybe up to 4 mm/yr) southwest of the Tashkorgan basin agrees with the late Pleistocene southern KF slip-rate (〉8 mm/yr).

At the Northeast Forestry University Experimental Forest Farm, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province of China, Populus simonii Populus simonii Carr. and Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. were selected as the objects and the electrical resistance of standing trees was tested through different seasons from December 2016 to December 2017. Meanwhile, the effects of changes in the seasonal temperatures (−20 to −10 °C, −10 to −5 °C, −5 to 0 °C, 0 to 5 °C, 5 to 10 °C, 10 to 15 °C, 15 to 25 °C) as well as changes in the moisture content (MC) (Populus simonii, MC ≥ 103%; Larix gmelinii, MC ≥ 77.5%) on the electrical resistance in the cross-sections of living trees were studied. The influence of temperature at different moisture contents, the moisture content at different temperatures, and their combined effects on electrical resistance were analyzed, following which a regression model was also established. The obtained results indicated that ambient temperature had a significant effect on the average value of electrical resistance in the cross-section of living trees when temperatures were below the freezing point. There was a sudden discontinuity near the freezing point, and logR (logarithm value of electrical resistance) in the cross-sections of sound trees and decayed trees changed in a similar trend with variations in the temperature. While the effect of moisture content on logR in the cross-sections of threes was insignificant at different temperatures because of the moisture content above FSP (fiber saturation point). It indicated that the temperature and moisture content had interactive effects on logR in the cross-sections. The binary linear regression model between moisture content, temperature, and logR was highly fitted with a correlation coefficient (R2) higher than 0.8. The outcome of this investigation indicates that when non-destructive testing is performed on living trees using electrical resistance at different seasonal temperatures, the measured results need to consider both the temperature and moisture content. For practical work, it is not recommended to consider testing living trees near the freezing point temperature using the electrical resistive tomography. Below the freezing point, the electrical resistance changes with temperature greatly relative to the normal temperature. Therefore, when performing the detection of electrical resistance, it is necessary to calibrate the effects of temperature

    Description: Cisplatin (CDDP) resistance usually develops during lung adenocarcinoma (LAC) therapy. However, the comprehensive mechanisms remain largely unclear. In this study, we first established a CDDP-resistant LAC cell line-A549/CDDP from its parental cell line-A549. The results showed that CDDP resistance in A549/CDDP cells correlates with acquirement of cancer stem cell-like properties (increased percentage of CD133-expressing subpopulation, sphere formation and levels of some pluripotency-associated markers). HtrA1 expression at both mRNA and protein levels was reduced in CDDP-resistant A549/CDDP cells compared with that in A549 cells. Ectopic expression of HtrA1 in A549/CDDP cells reversed cancer stem cell-like properties and CDDP resistance. In A549 cells, stable knockdown of HtrA1 expression promoted cancer stem cell-like properties and CDDP insensitivity, however, these effects were blocked by inhibition of PI3K/Akt pathway using LY294002. Furthermore, HtrA1 knockdown could significantly stimulate PI3K/Akt signaling in A549 cells. In vivo studies, HtrA1 knockdown promoted tumorigenesis and conferred CDDP resistance in xenograft A549 tumors, which were reversed by intraperitoneal injection of LY294002. In conclusion, these results indicate that HtrA1 downregulation confers CDDP resistance by inducing cancer stem cell–like properties via PI3K/Akt-dependent pathway in A549 cells. Therefore, HtrA1 may be a potential target for overcoming CDDP resistance in LAC. J. Cell. Biochem. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

    Description: Background: Lysinibacillus sphaericus (formerly named Bacillus sphaericus) is incapable of polysaccharide utilization and some isolates produce active insecticidal proteins against mosquito larvae. Its taxonomic status was changed to the genus Lysinibacillus in 2007 with some other organisms previously regarded as members of Bacillus. However, this classification is mainly based on physiology and phenotype and there is limited genomic information to support it. Results: In this study, four genomes of L. sphaericus were sequenced and compared with those of 24 representative strains belonging to Lysinibacillus and Bacillus. The results show that Lysinibacillus strains are phylogenetically related based on the genome sequences and composition of core genes. Comparison of gene function indicates the major difference between Lysinibacillus and the two Bacillus species is related to metabolism and cell wall/membrane biogenesis. Although L. sphaericus mosquitocidal isolates are highly conserved, other Lysinibacillus strains display a large heterogeneity. It was observed that mosquitocidal toxin genes in L. sphaericus were in close proximity to genome islands (GIs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Furthermore, different copies and varying genomic location of the GIs containing binA/binB was observed amongst the different isolates. In addition, a plasmid highly similar to pBsph, but lacking the GI containing binA/binB, was found in L. sphaericus SSII-1. Conclusions: Our results confirm the taxonomy of the new genus Lysinibacillus at the genome level and suggest a new species for mosquito-toxic L. sphaericus. Based on our findings, we hypothesize that (1) Lysinibacillus strains evolved from a common ancestor and the mosquitocidal L. sphaericus toxin genes were acquired by horizontal gene transfer (HGT), and (2) capture and loss of plasmids occurs in the population, which plays an important role in the transmission of binA/binB.
