    Notes: The present paper covers in a comprehensive manner the formation of the Cu-based Cu-Zr-Al bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Composition optimization for BMG formation is realized by using an “e/a-variant criterion”. This criterion is incorporated into the ternary phase diagram by a straight composition line, which is defined by linking a specific binary composition to the third element. There e/a-variant composition lines are constructed: (Cu9Zr4)1-xAl, (Cu61.8Zr38.2)1-xAlx and (Cu56Zr44)1-xAlx, where Cu9Zr4, Cu61.8Zr38.2 and Cu56Zr44 are specific cluster compositions in the Cu-rich Cu-Zr binary system. No Cu-based BMGs are obtained in the composition line (Cu9Zr4)1-xAlx using our suction casting techniques, while BMGs are obtained within an e/a span from 1.24 to 1.3and from 1.28 to 1.36 respectively along the other two lines (Cu61.8Zr38.2)1-xAlx and (Cu56Zr44)1-xAlx. Thermal analysis results indicate that the BMGs on every composition line manifest increased thermal stability and glass forming ability (GFA) with increasing e/a ratios. The maximum appears in Cu58.1Zr35.9Al6 with the e/a value of 1.3, which belongs to the (Cu61.8Zr38.2)1-xAlx series. Thecharacteristic thermal parameters of this BMG are Tg = 760K, Tg/Tm = 0.659 and Tg/Tl = 0.648, which are all superior to those reported for the known Cu55Zr40Al5 BMG

    Notes: Reactive ion etching of SiC induced surface damage, e.g., micromasking effect induced coarse and textured surface, is one of the main concerns in the fabrication of SiC based power devices [1]. Based on CHF3 + O2 plasma, 4H-SiC was etched under a wide range of RF power. Extreme coarse and textured etched surfaces were observed under certain etching conditions. A super-linear relationship was found between the surface roughness and RF power when the latter was varied from 40 to 160 W. A further increase in the RF power to 200 W caused the surface roughness to drop abruptly from its maximum value of 182.4 nm to its minimum value of 1.3 nm. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) results revealed that besides the Al micromasking effect, the carbon residue that formed a carbon-rich layer, could also play a significant role in affecting the surface roughness. Based on the AES results, an alternative explanation on the origin of the coarse surface is proposed

    Notes: In this work, we present results on the study of bonding and concentration ofcarbon in 4H-SiC MOS structure by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS spectra were fitted by several Gaussian lineshape functions. It is found that the so-called carbon clusters (C-C bonds) appear at the interface of SiO2/SiC, but are not seen in the oxide bulk. However, there are still some SiOxCy and Si-C bonds inside the oxide and the integrated area ratio of SiOxCy/Si-C bonds increases when further away from the SiO2/SiC interface. These observations can be interpreted in terms of the dynamic oxidation process that transforms Si-C bonds into SiOxCy bonds, which are then further oxidized to form SiO2 bonds

    Notes: The influence of GGBS (ground granulated blastfurnace slag) on concrete compressive strength is experimentally investigated in this paper. By bond strength experiment of GGBS concrete with reinforcing steel bar, the influence of GGBS mixture proportioning on bond strength is studied. The result indicates that, with an increase replacement percentage of GGBS, the bond strength between concrete and steel bar will decrease, and the depressed magnitude relates to the dosage of slag powder and type of steel bar. The studies provide a reference for the exploitation and application of GGBS concrete. As known to all, blastfurnace slag is a kind of industry waste produced by blastfurnace puddling. A great deal of research has been conducted on the characteristics of slag powder. Theimprovements of GGBS on the concrete composites are widely accepted. Studies on GGBS concrete bring remarkable social and economical benefits such as: reducing cost of per cube concrete; improving concrete performance and making full use of industry waste residue. The influence of GGBS mixture proportioning on concrete compressive strength and the bond characteristics between concrete and steel bar is experimentally studied in this paper

    Notes: Abstract The potential usefulness of shed snake skin as a model membrane for transdermal research was examined. There are similarities between shed snake skin and human stratum corneum in terms of structure, composition, lipid content, water permeability, etc. The permeability of various compounds and the contribution of several functional groups to the permeability were also found to be similar between shed snake skin and human skin. Moreover, the permeability of compounds through shed snake skin was increased by Azone, one of the most extensively studied transdermal penetration enhancers. Considering the similarities between shed snake skin and human skin, ease of storage and handling, and low cost, shed snake skin may offer a good model membrane for transdermal research.

    Notes: Summary A pattern recognition methodology for estimating local climate variables such as regional precipitation and air temperature using local observation and scenario information provided by GCMs is presented. We have adopted a three step approach: (a) Feature information extraction of climate variables, where weather patterns are expanded by the Karhunen-Loeve (K-L) orthogonal functional series; (b) Grey associative clustering of the feature vectors; (3) Stochastic weather generation by a Monte Carlo simulation. The methods described in this paper were verified using the temperature and precipitation data set of Wuhan, Yangtze river basin and the Shun Tian catchment, Dongjiang River in China. The proposed method yields good stochastic simulations and also provides useful information on temporal or spatial downscaling and uncertainty.

    Notes: Star shaped block copolymers with two arms of polystyrene (PS) blocks and two arms of poly(oxyethylene) (PEO) blocks were synthesized by coupling living PS anions first and then living PEO anions, using SiCl4 as the coupling agent, while the star shaped block copolymers with two arms of PS blocks and one arm of PEO block were prepared by using CH3SiCl3 as the coupling agent. The products were purified by extractions, and the purified copolymers were characterized by GPC, IR, 1H NMR and torsional braid analysis. The crystalline, emulsifying and complexing properties and also the phase transfer catalytic effect of the star shaped block copolymers were studied.

    Description: Parkin functions as a multipurpose E3 ubiquitin ligase, and Parkin loss of function is associated with both sporadic and familial Parkinson’s disease (PD). We report that the Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs (BAR) domain of protein interacting with PRKCA1 (PICK1) bound to the really interesting new gene 1 (RING1) domain of Parkin and potently inhibited the E3 ligase activity of Parkin by disrupting its interaction with UbcH7. Parkin translocated to damaged mitochondria and led to their degradation in neurons, whereas PICK1 robustly inhibited this process. PICK1 also impaired the protective function of Parkin against stresses in SH-SY5Y cells and neurons. The protein levels of several Parkin substrates were reduced in young PICK1-knockout mice, and these mice were resistant to 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-mediated toxicity. Taken together, the results indicate that PICK1 is a potent inhibitor of Parkin, and the reduction of PICK1 enhances the protective effect of Parkin.
