    Description: PTEN-induced kinase 1 (Pink1) and ubiquitin E3 ligase Parkin function in a linear pathway to maintain healthy mitochondria via regulating mitochondrial clearance and trafficking. Mutations in the two enzymes cause the familial form of Parkinson's disease (PD) in humans, as well as accumulation of defective mitochondria and cellular degeneration in flies. Here, we show that loss of function of a scaffolding protein Mask, also known as ANKHD1 (Ankyrin repeats and KH domain containing protein 1) in humans, rescues the behavioral, anatomical and cellular defects caused by pink1 or parkin mutations in a cell-autonomous manner. Moreover, similar rescue can also be achieved if Mask knock-down is induced in parkin adult flies when the mitochondrial dystrophy is already manifested. We found that Mask genetically interacts with Parkin to modulate mitochondrial morphology and negatively regulates the recruitment of Parkin to mitochondria. We also provide evidence that loss of Mask activity promotes co-localization of the autophagosome marker with mitochondria in developing larval muscle, and that an intact autophagy pathway is required for the rescue of parkin mutant defects by mask loss of function. Together, our data strongly suggest that Mask/ANKHD1 activity can be inhibited in a tissue- and timely-controlled fashion to restore mitochondrial integrity under PD-linked pathological conditions.

    Description: The tectonic processes that formed the Tibetan plateau have been a significant topic in earth science, but images of the subducting Indian continental lithosphere (ICL) are still not clear enough to reveal detailed continental collision processes. Seismological methods are the primary ways to obtain images of deep crust and upper-mantle structures. However, previous temporary seismic stations have been unevenly distributed over central Tibet. The Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has initiated a 2D broadband seismic network in central Tibet across the Bangong–Nujiang suture to fill in gaps among earlier north–south linear profiles for the purpose of detecting the lateral variation of the northern end of the subducting ICL. The health status for each station has been checked at each scheduled service trip. The noise level analysis shows a quiet background in central Tibet, with low cultural noise. Preliminary earthquake locations indicate that they are crustal and broadly distributed rather than only occurring along major faults, suggesting a diffused deformation in the conjugated strike-slip fault zone. Preliminary receiver function analysis shows a complicated crust with significant east–west lateral variations.

    Description: Using ionic liquid (IL) [C 2 MIM][PF 6 ] as an additive could remarkably improve the performance of the acetonitrile (CAN) process, which is the most widely used distillation process to produce 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BT). In this work, a rigorous simulation of a new IL process to produce 1,3-BT was carried out to evaluate the performance of IL additive on an industrial scale, using UNIFAC as the global thermodynamic model. Based on the simulation models, some key operation parameters, such as solvent ratio and reflux ratio, were determined by sensitivity analysis. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization was proposed and performed considering both the energy consumption and environmental impact (green degree) of the new process. A nonlinear mathematical model was established to express this multi-objective optimization problem, which includes six decision variables and involves maximizing the green degree of the process, the purity and the recovery of 1,3-BT, and minimizing the energy consumption of the process. The optimization results showed that the energy consumption of the IL-containing process could be reduced by 22 % and that its green degree could be improved by 9.2 %. A multi-objective optimization model for an IL-containing process which involves six decision variables and four objectives, including environmental impact (green degree), was proposed and solved by a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm).

    Description: The model of photon and pair production in strong field quantum electrodynamics is implemented into our 1D3V particle-in-cell code with Monte Carlo algorithm. Using this code, the evolution of the particles in ultrahigh intensity laser (∼10 23  W/cm 2 ) interaction with aluminum foil target is observed. Four different initial plasma profiles are considered in the simulations. The effects of initial plasma profiles on photon and pair production, energy spectra, and energy evolution are analyzed. The results imply that one can set an optimal initial plasma profile to obtain the desired photon distributions.

    Description: Aims With the continuing increase in the impact of human activities on ecosystems, ecologists are increasingly interested in understanding the effects of high temperature on litter decomposition since litter decomposition and the accompanying release of nutrients and carbon dioxide are key processes in ecosystem nutrient cycling and carbon flux. This study was conducted to evaluate the temperature sensitivity of forest litter decomposition and soil enzymes during litter decomposition in subtropical forest in China. Methods Two dominant litter types were chosen from Zijin Mountain in China: Quercus acutissima leaves from a broadleaf forest (BF) and Pinus massoniana needles from a coniferous forest (CF). The litter samples were incubated in soil microcosms at ambient control temperature (20°C) and 10°C warmer. During a 5-month incubation, chemical composition of litter samples, litter mass losses, and related soil enzyme activities were determined. Important Findings Three main results were found: (i) high temperature accelerated decomposition rates of both litter types, and the temperature sensitivities of litter decomposition for BF leaves and that for CF needles are equivalent basically, (ii) high temperature enhanced soil enzyme activities in the two forest types, and the temperature sensitivities of polyphenol oxidase were significantly higher than those of the other soil enzymes and (iii) the temperature sensitivities of nitrate reductase were significantly higher in the CF soil than in the BF soil, while there was no significant difference in the temperature sensitivities of the other soil enzymes between BF and CF. As a long-term consequence, the high-temperature-induced acceleration of litter decomposition rates in these subtropical forests may cause carbon stored belowground to be transferred in the atmosphere, which may alter the balance between carbon uptake and release, and then alter the global carbon cycle in the coming decades.

    Description: The Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) on board the European Space Agency's (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission for the first time measures globally Earth's radiation at a frequency of 1.4 GHz (L-band). It had been hypothesized that L-band radiometry can be used to measure the sea ice thickness due to the large penetration depth in the sea ice medium. We demonstrate the potential of SMOS to derive the thickness of thin sea ice for the Arctic freeze-up period using a novel retrieval algorithm based on Level 1C brightness temperatures. The SMOS ice thickness product is compared with an ice growth model and independent sea ice thickness estimates from MODIS thermal infrared imagery. The ice thickness derived from SMOS is highly consistent with the temporal development of the growth simulation and agrees with the ice thickness from MODIS images with 10 cm standard deviation. The results confirm that SMOS can be used to retrieve sea ice thickness up to half a meter under ideal cold conditions with surface air temperatures below −10°C and high-concentration sea ice coverage.

    Description: Branched nanostructures represent unique, 3D building blocks for the “bottom-up” paradigm of nanoscale science and technology. Here, we report a rational, multistep approach toward the general synthesis of 3D branched nanowire (NW) heterostructures. Single-crystalline semiconductor, including groups IV, III–V, and II–VI, and metal branches have been selectively grown on core or core/shell NW backbones, with the composition, morphology, and doping of core (core/shell) NWs and branch NWs well controlled during synthesis. Measurements made on the different composition branched NW structures demonstrate encoding of functional p-type/n-type diodes and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as well as field effect transistors with device function localized at the branch/backbone NW junctions. In addition, multibranch/backbone NW structures were synthesized and used to demonstrate capability to create addressable nanoscale LED arrays, logic circuits, and biological sensors. Our work demonstrates a previously undescribed level of structural and functional complexity in NW materials, and more generally, highlights the potential of bottom-up synthesis to yield increasingly complex functional systems in the future.

    Description: 〈p〉Lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation (Khib) has recently been shown to be an evolutionarily conserved histone mark. Here, we report that CobB serves as a lysine de-2-hydroxyisobutyrylation enzyme that regulates glycolysis and cell growth in prokaryotes. We identified the specific binding of CobB to Khib using a novel self-assembled multivalent photocrosslinking peptide probe and demonstrated that CobB can catalyze lysine de-2-hydroxyisobutyrylation both in vivo and in vitro. R58 of CobB is a critical site for its de-2-hydroxyisobutyrylase activity. Using a quantitative proteomics approach, we identified 99 endogenous substrates that are targeted by CobB for de-2-hydroxyisobutyrylation. We further demonstrated that CobB can regulate the catalytic activities of enolase (ENO) by removing K343hib and K326ac of ENO simultaneously, which account for changes of bacterial growth. In brief, our study dissects a Khib-mediated molecular mechanism that is catalyzed by CobB for the regulation of the activity of metabolic enzymes as well as the cell growth of bacteria.〈/p〉
