Notes: An optically addressed spatial light modulator with electrolyte bisphtalocyanine of lutetium incorporated in the alignment layer is shown to be capable of memorizing a grey scale image. The relationship between the memorized grey scale and the illumination is shown. The temperature, the concentration of Lu(Pc)2 and the spontaneous polarization of liquid crystals are found to have the effect on the memorization rate. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High resolution Laplace defect spectroscopy was used to study the fine structure of the electron emission process of DX(Sn) centers in AlxGa1−xAs (x=0.26,0.53). Two groups of peaks in the spectra of electron emission rates were found to correspond to two DX-like centers observed by deep level transient spectroscopy. The line splitting in both groups derives from the alloy disorder effect attributed to the different local configurations of Al and Ga atoms around two DX-like centers. Experimental evidence for the microscopic nature of two DX-like centers in Sn-doped AlGaAs is provided. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To understand and improve the applications of titanium-oxide nanoparticles, it is extremely important to perform a detailed investigation of the surface and the interior structural properties of nanocrystalline materials, such as rutile and anatase with diameter of few nanometers. Here, x-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to identify the local Ti environment and characterize the related electronic structure. We combine experimental results at the Ti K edge in both bulk and nanocrystal samples to determine the lattice distortion via the characteristic pre-edge features and the variation in the multiple-scattering region of the x-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra. The correlation between peak intensities and surface-to-volume ratio of nanoparticles is also discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Since many years the oxidation of alkali metals has being attracted much interest due to the catalytic properties of metal promoters and the simple electronic structure of alkali atoms. The alkali-oxides phase diagram indicates that the interaction of oxygen with alkali metals can lead to the formation of different atomic O2- ions and molecular O2- and O22- ions. Potassium superoxide has been prepared in situ and high resolution O k-edge absorption NEXAFS spectra have been measured at the VUV beam-line at ELETTRA facility. The experimental data have been analyzed by multiple scattering approach deriving many geometrical and electronic details. In particular, we have found that the growth material structure is of the KO2 type with an O-O distance of about 1.35Å and that the transition involving single π molecular empty state of the superoxide O2- anion has a fine structure. Multiple Scattering self consistent calculation indicates that the bond between oxygen anion and K atom is totally ionic and that the fine structure is essentially due to solid state effects.

Notes: Abstract X-ray absorption spectra at the Mg and Al K edges have been recorded using synchrotron radiation on synthetic end member diopside (Di) and jadeite (Jd) and on a series of natural Fe-poor Ca-Na clinopyroxenes compositionally straddling the Jd-Di join. The spectra of C2/c end members and intermediate members of the solid solution series (C-omphacites) are different from those of the intermediate members having P2/n symmetry (P-omphacites). Differences can be interpreted and explained by comparing the experimental spectra with theoretical spectra calculated via the full multiple-scattering formalism, starting from the atomic positional parameters determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure refinement on the same samples. Atomic clusters with at least 89 atoms, extending to more than 0.60 nm away from the Mg or Al absorbers, are needed to reproduce the experimental spectra. This shows that in the clinopyroxene systems XANES detects medium- rather than short-range order-disorder relationships. Theoretical spectra match the experimental ones well for all features in the regions from 16 to 60 eV above threshold. Experimental near-edge features in the first 16 eV are also reproduced, albeit less accurately. Certain near-edge features of C-omphacites reflect the octahedral arrangement of the back-scattering six O atoms nearest neighbours of the probed atom (Mg or Al) located at site M1 of the crystal structure, thus being indicators of short-range order. Others arise again from medium-range order. P-omphacites show more complicated spectra than C-omphacites. Their additional features reflect the increased complexity of the structure and the greater local disorder around the probed atom induced by the two alternative M1, M11 configurations of the six O atoms forming the first coordination shells. Mg and Al are confirmed to be preferentially partitioned in the M1 and M11 site of the P-omphacite crystal structure, however with a certain degree of local disorder. The relative heights of certain prominent features are directly related to sample composition in terms of Di:Jd ratio in the Al K-edge spectra, whereas they show abrupt variations in the Mg K-edge spectra. They demonstrate that XANES is directly related to composition and may be used to distinguish C- from P-omphacites.

Notes: Abstract The uses of diborane, trimethylboron and trimethylgallium gases have been systematically compared in order to obtain p-type hydrogenated amorphous silicon grown in silane rf glow discharges. The doping properties and the contamination effects due to the thermal CVD have been investigated by an in situ Kelvin probe. This study, which has been completed by electrical (dark conductivity, activation energy and fill factor of standard p-i-n devices), and optical (a combination of transmission and photothermal deflection spectroscopy) measurements, indicates that trimethylboron doped layers have semiconducting properties similar to those of diborane doped layers. When trimethylboron is used, the contamination is shown to be reduced by at least a factor 50. In contrast, trimethylgallium, despite its acceptable doping efficiency, produces a contamination intermediate between the diborane and the trimethylboron ones. The effects of C incorporation in the doped layers have also been studied, in particular by optical absorption measurements in the band-edge region.

Notes: Abstract The problem of estimation of all possible states that a linear system under bounded control may take (namely, the reachable or attainable set) is addressed. A number of previously developed Lyapunov techniques for estimating the reachable set of ann-dimensional linear system are extended and compared. The techniques produce over-estimates in the form ofn-dimensional ellipsoids. Illustrative examples are solved.
