    Notes: Tribological behavior of B4C-SiC self-mated pairs was studied, and pre-oxidation treatmentwas adopted to improve the tribological properties of B4C-SiC. At the same SiC content, self-frictioncoefficient of B4C-SiC decreases with the increase of sliding distance, normal load, and sliding velocity;while the increasing of SiC content leads to increase of both self-friction coefficient and ware rate, whichwas determined to be within the range of 0.8×10-6~5.8×10-6 mm3·N-1·m-1. Pre-oxidation treatment of theB4C-SiC resulted in the formation of B2O3/H3BO3 lubricant layers, which effectively reduced theself-friction coefficient

    Notes: ALG-2 is an apoptosis-linked Ca2+-binding protein. It is required for T-cell receptor-induced, Fas-induced and glucocorticoid-induced cell death.     Notes: Abstract Growth of thin films from atoms deposited from the gas phase is intrinsically a non-equilibrium phenomenon dictated by a competition between kinetics and thermodynamics. Precise control of the growth becomes possible only after achieving an understanding of this competition. In this review, we present an atomistic view of the various kinetic aspects in a model system, the epitaxy of Si on Si(001), as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy and total-energy calculations. Fundamentally important issues investigated include adsorption dynamics and energetics, adatom diffusion, nucleation, sticking, and detachment. We also briefly discuss the inverse process of growth, removal by sputtering or etching. We aim our discussions to an understanding at a quantitative level whenever possible.

    Notes: Thin films of (Zr0.7Sn0.3) TiO4 on Si(100) were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering in the present study. Films of a highly preferred [020] orientation, as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic examinations, were grown successfully on a Si substrate with in situ postannealing at 700°C. The chemical composition of the films, measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy, exhibited a uniform concentration distribution for all species. A study by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further revealed some firm evidence of a molecular orbital that affected the chemical structure. The dielectric constants of 400-nm-thick (Zr0.7Sn0.3)TiO4 films in the present study were 〉18 for the films with a preferred orientation and ~11 for polycrystalline films.

    Notes: Abstract The tumor suppressor p53 is believed to play an essential role in maintaining genome stability. Although it is currently unknown how p53 is involved in this important biological safeguard, several previous publications indicate that p53 can help to maintain genome integrity through the recombination-mediated DNA repair process. The integration of linearized plasmid DNA into the host chromosome utilizes the same repair process, and the frequency can be measured by clonogenic assays in which cells that were stably transfected by plasmid integration can be scored by their colony-forming abilities. To gain insight into whether p53 has a direct role in plasmid integration into the host chromosome, we determined the frequency of stable transfection with CHO cells expressing either wild-type or mutant p53 in the presence and absence of irradiation. We found that low-dose irradiation (∼50 to 100 cGy) increased stable transfection frequencies in CHO cells regardless of their p53 status. However, the increase of transfection frequency was significantly lower in CHO cells expressing wild-type p53. Our data thus suggest that wild-type p53 can suppress plasmid DNA integration into the host genome. This p53 function may play a direct and significant role in maintaining genome stability.

    Notes: Abstract To improve turfgrasses using genetic engineering, we have developed a transformation system in turf-type tall fescue, one of the most important turfgrass species. Embryogenic cell cultures were established after callus induction from embryos of mature seed. The agarose-bead method with nurse cells was used to culture protoplasts and plants were regenerated from protoplasts of tall fescue cultured cells. To develop transgenic tall fescue plants, the hygromycin resistance gene and the β-glucuronidase gene were introduced into the tall fescue protoplasts by electroporation. A high concentration (200 mg/l) of hygromycin was required to select transformed cells because of the high level of endogenous resistance to the antibiotic in tall fescue. Most of the transformed cells exhibited GUS activity and several plants were regenerated from these cells. The presence of introduced genes was confirmed by Southern blot hybridization of PCR amplified DNA from transgenic plants.

    Notes: Abstract The positively-charged fluorescent dye rhodamine 123 (r-123) specifically stains mitochondria in living plant protoplasts, suspensionculture cells, and root hairs. This dye functions as a vital stain and permits visualization of the localization, distribution and movement of the mitochondria. Dehydration of root hairs caused mitochondria to aggregate into clumps. Mitochondria were either homogenous or heterogeneous and were frequently seen to accumulate in the perinuclear regions of suspension-culture cells but not in those of protoplasts or root-hair cells. Dinitrophenol and high concentrations of ethyleneglycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid and KCl immediately eliminated fluorescence in r-123-stained mitochondria whereas ionomycin enhanced it. Treatment of seedlings with r-123 resulted in differential brightness of fluorescence in different tissues. Meristematic tissues, such as root and shoot tips, exhibited the brightest fluorescence. The cytotoxicity of r-123 in both germinating seedlings and suspension-culture cells was low. The specificity, sensitivity and low toxicity of r-123 should make it a useful tool in experiments designed to examine agents and conditions which affect the location, the physiological status or the viability of mitochondria.

    Notes: Abstract A new kind of single-quantum-well electroluminescent (EL) device consists of a hole transport N,N-Bis(3-methyphenyl)-N,N-diphenylbenzidine(TPD) layer, and electron transport 8-(quinolinolate)-aluminum(Alq) layer and a light emitting layer of Alq doped with 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene (rubrene) has been fabricated by the multisource-type high-vaccum organic molecular deposition. The dopant rubrene is as a potential well, and the undoped Alq layer is as a barrier layer. The EL spectra shows the spectral narrowing and the emission peak energy blue-shift, and the efficiency and luminance of the device have been significantly improved. The experimental phenomena is explained as the result of recombination of carriers from the quantized energy state.
