Notes: General characteristics of dislocations in beta-barium metaborate (BBO) bulk crystals have been investigated via light-scattering tomography (LST). The dislocations induced by inclusions and the residual products which can reflect the interaction process between the dislocation loops were observed in the experiment. Moreover, the decoration of the dislocation lines in BBO crystals with impurity atoms was also demonstrated by LST images.

Notes: The nonmonotonic relation between the increasing wavelength and the noncritical phasematching (NCPM) temperature are analyzed in detail for temperature-tuned as well as the phase matching angle for angle-tuned second harmonic generation in a LiB3O5 (LBO) crystal. This relation was called "the phase matching retracing behavior.'' Because of the retrace, LBO is the unique nonlinear optical crystal that can produce the spectra through blue to near infrared by NCPM. It has been shown that the retracing wavelengths (∼1.3 μm), and furthermore, the conjugation relation for phase matched wavelengths are approximately independent of the tuning means. There exist at the retracing wavelengths not only the retrace for the tuning curves but also for the beam walkoff, group velocity mismatch, and the angular and spectral acceptances. The spectral noncritical phase matching is achieved and the group velocity mismatch is zero at the retracing points. The temperature acceptances are also very large. These properties of LBO, combining its high damage threshold, high transparency, nonhygroscopicity, and the availability of the large and high quality crystal, make LBO the best choice in doubling, either by type I or type II, by temperature-tuned or angle-tuned, the radiations (including ultrafast pulses) in the vicinity of 1.3 μm, such as those from some diode lasers, optical parametric oscillator/amplifier, and Nd:YAG/YAP/YLF lasers working at 4F3/2–4I13/2 transition.

Notes: Potassium fluoroboratoberyllate KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) has been revealed theoretically and experimentally as a novel ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystal, but it is found to be very difficult to grow in a large size, because of the weak binding interaction between the (Be2BO3)∞ units, which leads to an apparent layer habit in the growth. By using a molecular engineering approach, oxygen bridges when brought in to strengthen the binding between the infinite units are found to be useful to overcome the above shortcoming of KBBF, and in the light of it another new ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystal—strontium boratoberyllate Sr2Be2B2O7 (SBBO) has been discovered. The linear optical properties of SBBO are similar to KBBF's, but its nonlinear optical properties are better than that of the latter. d22(SBBO)(approximately-equal-to)d22(β-BaB2O4), which is two times higher than d11 of KBBF. SBBO has very good mechanical properties, and it is also not deliquescent. So SBBO is expected to have great potential for the application in ultraviolet nonlinear optical devices. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Noncritical phase-matching properties for LiB3O5 crystal are reported. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) with temperature-tuned phase matching was measured at a fundamental wavelength ranging from 1340 to 900 nm with corresponding temperature tuning from −10 to 280 °C. Based on the experimental results a new type of SHG device has been made from the crystal, and the advantage of such a device is also demonstrated.

Notes: Based on the anionic group theory of nonlinear optical crystals and the relationship between the microscopic nonlinear coefficients of the anionic group and the macroscopic coefficients of the crystal, an evaluation system has been established to analyze the spatial arrangement of the anionic groups in a crystal lattice. A structural criterion is given to find which crystal has a favorable spatial arrangement of the anionic groups in terms of its nonlinear effects. Some of the currently available nonlinear optical crystals have been analyzed in this way with a computer program to test the evaluation method, and results demonstrate that the above structural criterion is quite reliable. Several compounds with crystallographic data from an inorganic crystal structure database were evaluated and found to be possible good candidates for nonlinear applications. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The retracing behavior of the phase-matching angle (RBPA) in optical parametric generation (OPG) based on a LiB3O5 (LBO) crystal and pumped at 532 nm by a frequency doubled, passive-active mode-locked Nd:YAG laser is investigated. Two pairs of radiations, which are simultaneously generated in the OPG, are observed and the spectral radiant power of the four tunable beams are obtained, showing good agreement with the theoretical calculation results. Together with the parametric process, two kinds of frequency-mixing waves are produced and this novel multiwavelength interaction phenomenon is analyzed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Retraces of phase-matching (PM) angles and noncritical phase-matching temperatures for both type I and type II second harmonic generation in LiB3O5(LBO) are first demonstrated. By fitting to the measured PM angles at room temperature, new Sellmeier's equations of LBO are obtained. Further analyzing the spectral and angle acceptances, we point out that LBO is particularly useful in doubling radiations near 1.3 μm such as 1.32 μm of Nd:YAG, 1.31 μm of Nd:YLF, and 1.34 μm of Nd:YAP.

Notes: A second-harmonic generation of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at λ=530 nm was focused into the polished beta barium metaborate crystals, and the scattering light was collected by a motor-driven camera at 90° direction. This arrangement allows direct and nondestructive detection of microdefects in bulk crystals. Dislocation lines decorated by impurity atoms could be seen by a laser beam illuminating with the power intensity of about 0.5 MW/cm2, while microinclusions of about 1–5 μm in size could be observed with much lower laser intensity.
