On souligne les renseignements obtenus en utilisant chacune de ces techniques et on compare les avantages et les inconvénients de ces différentes méthodes.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Einige Beispiele der Anwendung der Thermogravimetrie, Differential Scanning Kalorimetrie, thermomechanischen Analyse, Torsionsfadenanalyse, Streßrelaxometrie und dynamischen Viscoelastometrie zur Untersuchung quervernetzter Polymersysteme werden gegeben. Die an Hand des Einsatzes der einzelnen Techniken erhaltenen Informationen werden beschrieben und die Vor- und Nachteile der verschiedenen Methoden miteinander verglichen.
    Notes: Abstract Some examples are given of the application of thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, torsional braid analysis, stress relaxometry and dynamic viscoelastometry to the study of cross-linked polymer systems. The information derived by the use of each technique is outlined and the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods are compared.

    Notes: Abstract The fluorescence emission and triplet absorption properties of phenylalanine in cod fish parvalbumin type II, a protein that contains no Trp or Tyr, was examined in the time scale ranging from nanoseconds to microseconds at 25°C in aqueous buffer (pH 7.0). In the presence of Ca(II), the decay of fluorescence gave two lifetimes (5.9 and 53 ns) and the triplet lifetime was 425 μs. Upon removal of Ca, the fluorescence intensity decreased to values approaching that for free Phe, while the longest fluorescence decay component was 17 ns. At the same time, the decay of triplet showed complex nonexponential kinetics with decay rates faster than in the presence of Ca. Quenching and denaturation analyses suggest that the Phe's are present in a hydrophobic environment in the Ca-bound protein but that the Ca-free protein is relatively unstructured. It is concluded that Phe luminescence in proteins is sensitive to conformation and that the long lifetime of Phe excited states needs to be considered when studying its photochemistry in proteins.

    Notes: Abstract Plastic yielding behaviour of three different cross-link density rubber-modified epoxy resins, at different rubber levels and temperature, were investigated. All the systems studied show decrease in Young's modulus,E, and yield stress, σY, with increasing temperature and rubber content. The deformation process was analysed using both Bowden and Argon theories. Molecular parameters from each. theory were then compared with chemical structures of the epoxy systems.

    Notes: The thermal degradation in vacuum of a number of halogenated poly(phenylene oxide) polymers has been studied by a weight loss method. In general the thermal stability decreased as the degree of substitution in the phenylene nuclei increased. The chloro derivatives were relatively more stable than the corresponding bromo derivatives. The majority of the polymers showed an initial rapid loss in weight followed by the formation of a highly stable residue. The good thermal stability of the simpler poly(phenylene oxides), coupled with their fusibility and solubility, indicate that they may be useful starting products for the preparation of practical materials.

    Notes: Aromatic polyimides were prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride and a number of aromatic diamines. The effect of certain variables on the polymerization to, and the degradation of, the intermediate polypyromellitamic acids was studied, and a previously unrecorded reaction intermediate was isolated and identified. From these studies the conditions necessary to obtain high molecular weights were defined. Techniques were developed for the fabrication of satisfactory films and moldings.

    Notes: The thermal degradation in oxygen of a number of fluorine-containing polymers has been studied by using a weight loss technique. The relative thermal stabilities of the different polymers have been determined and, where possible, the overall activation energy and frequency factors for their breakdown. The results have been compared with those for samples of the same polymers degraded in vacuum. There is little change in the relative thermal stabilities observed under both conditions, the fully fluorinated structures being the most stable. The changes in the rates of breakdown in the presence of oxygen are difficult to interpret in the absence of mechanistic information.

    Notes: The thermal degradation in vacuum of polymers containing aromatic or heterocyclic rings linked by various groups has been studied by a weight loss method. The most stable of the polymers examined were those with —CO—, mixed —SO2— and —O—, or—SO2— linkages. The stability of these were superior to or comparable with poly-p-phenylene and poly-m-phenylene. The particular combinations of aromatic nuclei and linking groups used did not result in tractability as most of the polymers were insoluble and infusible, even though of low molecular weight. Substitution in the aromatic nuclei could improve tractability, though at the expense of thermal stability.

The relative thermal stabilities of the different polymers have been determined and, where possible, the overall activation energy for breakdown. The results have been compared with those for samples of the same polymers degraded in vacuum. The most thermally stable of the polymers examined under oxidizing conditions was poly(2,6-dichlorophenylene oxide), with a stability comparable with that of a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene.
