Abstract An investigation of the fully plastic load-carrying capacity of aluminum-alloy I-beams with web cutouts leads to an interest in the elastic stress distribution for these cutouts. The photoelastic procedure was used to evaluate the elastic stress distribution at the surface of the web cutouts. The shear-difference method was used to establish the probable location of the fully plastic hinges which might be expected to form in the aluminum-alloy prototype. The data obtained were in good agreement with experimental results obtained on aluminum-alloy I-beams.
